I stepped onto solid Earth through the portal near The Lounge and gazed around the empty alleyway to make sure nobody had seen me. A thin layer of snow covered the cement. I walked toward the back entrance and banged on the door with the side of my fist. Someone glanced through the peephole and opened the door. “Commander,” the burly man said. “Your usual?” When I nodded my head, he disappeared down the hallway. A breeze hit my exposed legs, and I wrapped my arms around myself. The city was quiet this morning, the usual morning crowd wouldn’t show up for at least another hour. I yawned, the cold keeping me awake. I didn’t sleep at all last night. Hell, I didn’t even leave Dad’s office.
