"The Descent"

The implosion of OceanGate's Titan submersible, which occurred on June 18, 2023, has been widely reported in the news. The vessel, which had descended into the Atlantic Ocean to visit the wreckage of the Titanic, was destroyed, resulting in the deaths of five individuals: OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, owner of Action Aviation Hamish Harding, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, his son Sulemon Dawood, and French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet. The debris from the Titan, including its tail end, was found by an unmanned vehicle about 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic. The pieces of the Titan are located at a depth of 12,500 feet, which is deeper than nine Empire State Buildings stacked on top of each other. At this depth, the water pressure is so intense that it crushes the entire human body except for the bones and crumples vessels with any crack or defect. Ecologist Nicolai Roterman explained that if a submersible implodes into a human body, there is little chance of finding any remains, as the deceased would have died instantly and "known nothing" as their bodies were subjected to pressure equal to the weight of the Eiffel Tower. The pressure at the depth where the Titanic rests underwater is 5,500 to 6,000 psi, which is equivalent to up to 10,000 tons pressing against the submersible and the individuals inside. The implosion of the Titan would have occurred due to minuscule or even microscopic defects, causing the air inside to compress down to a point, resulting in the forces of the water rushing in and the collapse being enormous. The victims likely did not suffer and were unaware of what happened.
