After the first scream the child must have been knocked unconscious, for her eyes were closed and she seemed hardly to be breathing. Her leg was pouring with blood and Theola thought she must have cut an artery. She put the child’s head in her lap and pulled up her ragged dress. “Give me your handkerchief, please,” she said to Captain Petlos, who was standing beside her. He started to feel in his pockets and Theola thought perhaps he had not brought one with him. Impatiently, she pulled off the soft silk scarf that she wore round her neck and began to tie it round the little girl’s leg above the knee. “This child must be taken to a hospital at once!” she said. “I am sure she will require medical attention.
