Chapter 3: Intermission Nathaniel had tears in his eyes. “I didn’t mean to upset you,” said Adam. “I’ve resigned myself to never seeing my Ruben again. But I’m content to be with him in this way, the only way I can be with him.” Adam tenderly kissed the tree. Nathaniel wiped his eyes. “My tears are only in part due to your story. They’re also in part due to my own, which has some striking similarities to the one you’ve just told.” Adam looked at Nathaniel with a strange expression on his face. There was a slight frown on his brow. “Striking similarities?” He brought his arm from around the trunk and rested it in his lap. “How so?” “I can’t say my story is as elaborate as yours,” began Nathaniel. “Though I’ll tell you what happened so you can hear the almost unbelievable similarities
