Lizzie’s words stopped Trent in his metaphorical tracks, and the same feeling of slow motion filled him. He licked his dry lips. “Pregnant?” he croaked. “I’m almost two months along.” Silence fell. Trent could only hear his heart pounding, the blood rushing into his ears. He wondered if he was the one going to faint right now. Lizzie, for her part, didn’t try to fill the silence with chatter. He almost wished she would. It would be preferable to listening to his own tangled thoughts. “Is it mine?” was his next question, and right as he asked, he knew it had been a stupid thing to ask.
