It was late when they pulled up in front of the house. The night had turned cold, near freezing, and Hunter crossed his arms in front of him, wishing he had worn something warmer than the fleece pullover. He looked at the big redbrick house, with its single light shining out like a beacon, and wondered if he could bear to go inside, the place was so filled with memories…yet so empty of human warmth. Hunter couldn’t bear the thought of walking past his grandmother’s room and seeing the empty four-poster.
He looked over at Jay and smiled. “Tonight was really fun. Thank you. I needed to get out and not dwell on everything that’s happened.” Hunter laughed self-consciously. “I guess I could say you’re just what the doctor ordered.”
Jay groaned and then grinned. “I had a good time too, Hunter.”
They sat in silence for a few minutes, and Jay interlaced his fingers with Hunter’s. The touch felt wonderful. Jay had taken him to a pizza place called Pequod’s out in the suburb of Morton Grove. The little restaurant reminded Hunter of the kind of place one would find up at Lake Geneva, with its wood paneling and retro feel. And the pizza was amazing, which was no small feat in a metro area famous for its pizza.
“I ate too much. But it was, really, the best I’ve ever had.”
“I hope I get to show you lots of the ‘best you’ve ever had.’”
Jay leaned forward and kissed Hunter. The kiss lingered, but Hunter felt Jay held back. His tongue only flickered over his lower lip. He hoped his inexperience with kissing wasn’t too obvious.
Jay leaned back in his seat. “That wasn’t too forward, was it?”
“Not at all. Do it again.”
And he did. This time their tongues met, and Hunter surprised himself by grabbing onto Jay’s stubbled face and pulling his lips even closer to his own. Finally they sat back, and both were breathing harder.
“Is it hot in here, or is it just me?”
Hunter laughed at the question. “I hope I didn’t talk your ear off tonight.”
“No, no, not at all. I loved hearing about you. You’ve led a unique life.”
“A boring life is more like it.”
He had told Jay pretty much his entire life story, beginning with his childhood and the mysterious murder of his parents, moving quickly to his life with Nana and how she had sheltered him from the outside world.
He had told him about his inheritance.
When Jay hadn’t seemed interested, Hunter wasn’t surprised. He probably made a good income as a doctor, and perhaps talk of money wasn’t appropriate on a date. But what did Hunter know of what was and wasn’t appropriate for dating? He did not tell Jay this was his first time out with a man, and he prayed Jay couldn’t tell that this was his first kiss either.
“Hey.” Jay turned Hunter’s face toward his. “Do you think we could go inside? It’s cold out here!”
“Of course. I’m sorry. I should have thought of that before.”
They got out of the car, and Hunter wondered what he was doing. Maybe this was moving too fast. Maybe the sensible thing was to give Jay another kiss good night at the door and send him on his way. But when he thought of that kiss, his jeans tightened again, and he found that he couldn’t bear the thought of only one more kiss.
My God, Hunter, are you going from virgin to slut with no stops in between? And with your poor grandma not even cold in her grave? Shame on you! Hunter quieted the voice inside, feeling Jay pressed close as he unlocked the door, which took some time because his fingers were shaking.
Inside, in the dark, Jay pressed Hunter up against the door and kissed him, harder this time, the stubble on his face chafing against Hunter’s smooth skin. But he wouldn’t have stopped him. He didn’t know what was going on with him and had a fleeting thought of the impropriety of what was happening, but he didn’t care.
Nana wouldn’t want him to be alone, would she?
And he certainly didn’t want to be alone. He hungrily sucked on Jay’s tongue, all but wrapping his legs around the doctor’s torso. Jay ran his hands up and down Hunter’s spine, then went lower to cup his ass. Then, abruptly, he pulled away.
Hunter stepped back, knowing from the burning in his cheeks he must be flushed.
“Do you know how handsome you look? How tempting?” Jay breathed. He put his hand on Hunter’s hips, pulling him close so their crotches were mashed together. Hunter could feel their erections touching, and just knowing Jay was as hard as he was made him weak in the knees. He didn’t know how much longer he could remain standing. “But I worry that we’re moving too fast.”
Disappointed, Hunter nodded, searching Jay’s dark eyes. “I know.”
“But I’ve never felt this way about anyone before. Hunter, being with you today and this evening has been like, oh, it sounds corny, but like magic. In the short time we were apart, you were all I could think about. That never happens.”
“Me too. But do you want to slow it down? Do you want to go home?”
Jay kissed him again with the same fervor and passion as before, leaving them both breathless. He pulled back. “No. I mean, part of me is saying, ‘He’s so worth it. Take your time. Don’t rush things.’ But I don’t know if I can listen to that voice.”
“I don’t know if I can either.” Boldly Hunter pressed his lips against Jay’s, thrusting his tongue inside. As he kissed him, he thought how right this felt, and if he thought of Nana at all, he told himself she would be happy for him. And even though they really hardly knew each other, Hunter wanted to tell Jay that he loved him, but something told him to hold off until later.
At least until the morning…
Hunter finally made himself break away long enough to move into the living room, where he switched on a couple of lamps. “Can I get you something to drink? Nana kept a pretty fully stocked bar. For an old girl, she could drink you under the table!”
“Good Lord, no. I think I’ve more than reached my limit with all the beer we had. I probably shouldn’t have gotten behind the wheel.”
Hunter plopped down on the couch, realizing that the light-headedness he felt was probably not entirely due to Jay. He wasn’t used to drinking, and the beer was, he now realized, having its effect.
Jay moved to turn off the lights. He sat down next to Hunter on the couch and pulled him close. He started kissing him again, this time unzipping the fleece before removing it, then unbuttoning Hunter’s shirt to slip his hand inside and explore the smoothness of his chest. When he tweaked a n****e, Hunter gasped.
His hands went lower, and Hunter squirmed as Jay unzipped his jeans, freeing his erection. He could feel the head of it straining at the waistband of his boxers. Jay closed his hand around the blood-engorged flesh, then slipped to his knees on the floor, nudging Hunter’s legs apart. He pulled down the front of the boxers, and Hunter felt the cold air rush in to caress him as well.
Jay eyed his c**k in the darkness, rubbing the precum in its slit around the head. “f**k, you’re ready.”
He slid his hands under Hunter’s ass, lifting him into his mouth. The sensation of Jay’s hot mouth and tongue on his c**k was just about enough to send Hunter over the edge. He cried out, burying his hands in Jay’s mass of curls and pulling.
It felt so good.
Just in the nick of time, Jay pulled his mouth away. Hunter’s c**k twitched. A line of precum ran down the shaft, and Jay licked it away. Hoarsely, Jay asked, “Maybe we should continue this in the bedroom?”
Hunter felt an odd rush of emotions, a paradoxical mix. For one, he was filled with a lust he’d never felt before, yet he knew this wasn’t right. What would happen in the bedroom? Would his lack of experience be an embarrassment? And there was the matter of what Jay wanted to do in the bedroom. If it was what he thought it was, would it hurt? Would he bleed? Was he clean? And most of all, he had the presence of mind to wonder if he really was doing the right thing.
If their feelings for each other were real and true, why rush to consummate things so soon?
Hunter was surprised when he looked down to see Jay staring up at him. “You were lost in thought.”
“I—I’m sorry.”
“Is everything okay?”
Hunter nodded. He reached down, tugging Jay up under his armpits. “Come sit by me.”
They sat in silence for a moment. Then Jay said, “Hunter, don’t be offended, but you have been with a man before, right?”
Once again, Hunter could feel his face growing hot. He looked at Jay and shook his head.
“Oh God, why didn’t you say so? I was moving way too fast.”
“But I wanted it.”
“Oh, I know. I know.” Jay winked and snickered. “But we don’t have to do anything tonight if you’re not ready.”
“Does this look like I’m not ready?” Hunter indicated with his chin the erection jutting up between his legs, looking so hard it might explode.
Jay gave it a squeeze, making Hunter gasp. Then he sat back on the couch. “The little head is always ready, isn’t it? But it’s the big head I’m concerned about. I don’t want to rush things, Hunter. I like you too much for that.”
Hunter worried for a second that he would lose Jay if he didn’t go through with what they had started, then berated himself for thinking that way. He wouldn’t be losing much if Jay were that kind of man.
Jay pulled up Hunter’s boxers and gave his c**k a gentle pat. He smiled and brushed his lips across Hunter’s. Sitting back, he said, “I think this is much too soon. You’re worth the wait. I am so sure. So let’s give it a little time, huh? Get to know each other better?”
In spite of the fever of desire he’d felt only moments before, Hunter realized he was relieved by Jay’s words. “Thank you.”
Nature had a way of intervening at the most inopportune times. Hunter realized the beer was coming through, erection or not. “I’ll be right back.”
When he returned, Jay stood by the door, shrugging into his topcoat. The naïve part of Hunter wondered whether he’d ever see him again. Surely, for a hot young doctor like Jay, there were plenty of willing men out there. Why bother with Hunter, inexperienced as he was?
Stop thinking that way! He’s not like that. Hunter moved toward him, and Jay reached out his arms. They hugged, and Jay kissed him with no less passion and hunger than before, but he pulled away. Damn it, he pulled away.
“I better get going. Early calls tomorrow.”
“I understand.” Hunter stepped back. He noticed his hands were shaking again, and he hurried to cross his arms, hiding them from Jay.
“Can I see you tomorrow night?” Jay’s smile was tentative, almost as if he wasn’t sure of the answer Hunter had poised on his lips.
“Of course…whatever you want.”
Jay let out a sigh. “Good. I didn’t want to think my horniness had spoiled things.”
Hunter touched Jay’s face. “You could never spoil things.”

As he drove south on Lake Shore Drive, Jay Blackstock laughed, turned up the music, and signaled to get off at the Belmont exit. Over the pulsing Crystal Method CD blaring in his car, he shouted, “I need to get laid!”
He turned right on Halsted, heading toward Steamworks, which Jay thought of as Chicago’s finest bathhouse.
