The aching pain in my head was followed by the pain of my straining muscles. It took me a while to regain my senses as I felt the familiar hard foam of my bed beneath me. “Ah-” I grunted as I turned onto my side. “Mom! She’s up.” Came Sylvie’s voice from a distance. It was then that it all dawned on me and my senses kicked in this time as I jerked awake. My muscles screamed in pain as I sat up straight finding myself in my room. Sylvie rushed to my side, “Are you alright, Viv?” Her concerned face had me nodding without even thinking twice. They didn’t need to know if my body ached like I had just shifted for the first time. Wait- “Did I shift or what?” She shook her head, “No, you just fainted. It was kinda weird.” I did feel something before I fainted. The surge of energy through my veins was too much to handle and just as quickly as it had surged, it faded and my body gave out. The last thing I could recall was the faces of my family, utterly worried. “Thank Goddess, you’re awake.” Mom rushed into the room. One of the two rooms in our cottage other than the small space by the entrance, which we called the lounge although it was far from that. “I tried calling Miss Delaney but-“ “But she couldn’t come, as usual too busy treating the high profiles of our pack.” I snorted, cutting Mom off. She sighed and placed her hands on either side of my face, “Of course, the pack doctor wouldn’t come rushing for a werewolf who just turned 18 and fainted. After all, the stronger wolves have it harder.” I smiled at her. “You don’t have to console me, Mom. I am not a kid anymore.” “Besides who would wanna be as strong? It's like asking death to chase after you.” Sylvie rolled her eyes. “The king would have the poor wolf hunted down for being a hybrid.” I shook my head while Mom gave Sylvie a side look for her choice of words. The atrocities of the pack towards the omegas or the lower-ranked ones had always been obvious and justified based on class but when it came to the hybrids, it wasn’t limited just to the packs. The king of the lycan world would make sure they were hunted and killed before they could become trouble for our world. “What time is it?” I asked, changing the topic. “It's noon. Freshen up, I will prepare something for you to eat.” Mom began to head out of the room. Once she left, Sylvie followed her after suggesting I get ready and head out to find my mate to which I only snorted. Finding a mate was the least of my worries and I had better things to do. Fainting didn’t scare me, neither did the muscle cramp. I had been waiting for this day for so long and now when it was here, I wasn’t going to waste it resting. I might not be as strong as a hybrid neither did I want to be if it meant I would be hunted down for it, but I could train to protect my family. Mom could turn but she was too weak to defend us while Sylvie was only 13. I picked up the only phone we had and dialled Aunt Maya. The bell rang twice before she picked up. “Hello, Aunt Maya? It's me, Vivian.” —————————————————————————————————————— “Are you gonna wear that to find your mate?” Sylvie gasped as I stepped out of the room, her eyes scanning the pair of trousers and hoodie I had on with a backpack hanging on one of my shoulders. Mom glanced at us with a puzzled look. Before I could shoot my sister a look to shut her up, Mom was already out of the kitchen with a fresh plate of pancakes. “Where are you going?” I would be a fool to tell her about my plans. If she found out that I was going to train an hour after regaining consciousness, she wouldn’t let me step a foot out of our old cottage. She raised a questioning brow when I didn’t answer straight away. “Out,” I murmured, chewing on my lower lip. “To look for her mate. Why else?” Sylvie chimed in, once again. I opened my mouth to shut her up but the softened expressions of Mom made me shut up. She was buying it. I couldn’t believe that she thought that I, Vivian Hart. was that desperate for a mate? I wanted to object and make the most disgusted face but I could see the situation working in my favor already. “Finish this first and maybe change into something better, honey.” That was only what she said before disappearing back into the kitchen. I glanced at the plate and then at the place where Mom had been standing. I couldn’t believe that it had worked. Quickly I sat down and gulped down the pancakes. “Goddess, you’re desperate for him already. Is this how mate bond works?” My sister commented from across the lounge, watching me intently. I shot her a glare but kept my mouth shut. Everything was working in my favour, I only needed to get to Aunt Maya’s without arousing suspicion and begin my training. Once I was done, I put the plate down and grabbed the strap of my bag. “I am leaving Mom. See you.” “Wait.” I was almost by the main door when she called out. I paused, waiting for her to pop out of the kitchen to find me in a hoodie and trousers but it didn’t happen. “What is it?” I said out loud. Her reply came almost instantly, “The word is that the King’s guards were seen hunting in the nearby grounds. If you encounter one, do not engage with them.” I sighed. “Relax Mom. I am not the one they’re hunting for.” With that, I waved at Sylvie to which she gave me the most teasing smile. “Good luck Viv.” I rolled my eyes before heading out and shutting the door behind me. ------------------------------------------------------------------
