Ch 04

My body felt as if it had been crushed under a pile of rubble and I was barely conscious yet there was a tug at my heart, like a pull on a thread keeping me awake. It took me a moment to acknowledge the feeling that someone else was at the other end of the thread and they were close to me, among the many that surrounded us. Some of them had transitioned and were snarling at me, ready to pounce anytime while the others were still in their human form. I knew the feeling. The feeling that was mentioned in the fairy tales of the Lycan world. The feeling of having your mate around for the first time. I stared back at them, dismissing the emotion. I had far more important things to deal with than a mate here. My heart was filled with dread and shaky breaths blew past my lips. The silence was heavy in the air and the scene seemed to have paused. One by one, the small army of wolves began to part and it was then that I noticed the crest engraved on their arms. It was the King’s Guard. As they parted and paved the way, the tug began to grow stronger. No matter how much I tried to ignore it or bury the feeling, it stayed and grew powerful to the point where I began to wait for the person on the other end to emerge. He was here, I knew that for sure. Through my weak vision, I made out a male figure approaching closer. He stopped when there remained only a step between us. His tall and broad body shadowed me, blocking the sun until I could only make out his silhouette. “Let her go! Have mercy, my King.” Begged Aunt Maya. Her voice was breathless as if she was struggling. I turned my head to the source of the voice to find two wolves holding her back as she thrashed against their hold. It was a moment later that her words registered. King? I snapped my head back at the silhouette and stared at the source of the tug standing in front of me. Who was he? I raised a hand to block the light surrounding him and found the most chilling blue eyes staring back at me. For a moment, everything stopped until the only noise was the beating of my heart in my ears as I gasped lowly. It was my mate. The revelation seemed to dawn on him at the same time as those eyes narrowed, clearly displeased by the coincidence. Smoothly, he knelt in front of me as if assessing something deeming whether it was fit to be his or not. I wanted to move, step away from my captor and unfortunately my mate too but I was incapable of even moving a limb. I would have fainted long ago if it wasn’t for him. He was making me hold on, dominating the string connecting us and tugging it to keep me awake. “Hell,o Darling.” He whispered, so low that it was barely audible. The words made my lips dry and a cold shiver ran down my spine. Right as he leaned in, enough for me to make out his face a voice broke from the crowd. “My King, let us get rid of her right away.” A man stepped closer towards us. A snarl resounded, more dreadful than any I have ever heard before and the man paused midway. It didn’t seem to disturb me as I was beginning to realize who they were addressing as the King. And he was none other than the man by my side. “No one will touch her.” He commanded. “The Hybrid’s all mine.” The deep voice issued a hidden command and slowly everyone began to take a step back. Great, so now he would do the deed with his own hands. My mate was going to end my life. “Prepare for return. We are heading back to the palace.” Everyone froze and it was then in the silence, did Ifeltl my mate’s hand wrap around my back. “I am taking my prize back to the capital.” It was then that I noticed the smallest smirk on that face. I wanted to fight back, resist and stop him from taking me but I could not. “I beg for your mercy my King. She is innocent and knows nothing of the evil ways.” Aunt Maya begged once more but someone from the crowd scoffed at her. “There is no mercy for the Hybrid. She will meet her end, if not here then in the capital.” It was the man standing behind my mate, who replied to which my Aunt wailed and pleaded even more. My eyes began to grow heavier as I gulped once more, trying harder to hold on but the tug had stopped. “We’ll see each other soon.” He whispered to me as darkness began to envelop me and I gave into the hold of his arm. ———————————————————————————— Gasping, I sat up straight. My body jolted awake and my eyes opened wide, my vision clearer than ever. For a moment, I thought that I would finally meet the Moon Goddess but to my surprise, I was alive. They hadn’t killed me yet. Immediately, I looked around the partially lit room and calmed my breathing realizing that I wasn’t alone here. My body was covered in sweat and I was in a place that seemed to have come out of a dream but all I could think about was surviving. Slowly, I calmed my breathing to hear if anyone else was around. From somewhere far away, I could make out a faint voice. I needed to get closer. The white sheet draped off my body and fell to the floor as I stood up. The cool air hit me hard, making me realize how little clothing I had on when they had taken me away. I noticed a jacket lying on the end of the bed. Quickly, I rushed to it and put it on. I had to survive and go back to my family. Goddess knew how devastated Mom and Sylvie must be. The closer I stepped towards the wall at the end of the room, the clearer the voices became. “I have made the necessary preparations for the execution of the Hybrid.” A muffled voice sounded. They were talking beyond this wall and surprisingly, I could hear them clear as day. A grunt sounded. “Did I command it?” It took me merely a second to recognize his voice. It belonged to the King and unfortunately my mate. There was silence in the air. A deadly one. “Is something wrong?” I recognized the other man’s voice as the one who was standing behind the King earlier. Who was eagerly waiting for me to be executed? I wondered if he was in the position to question the King like that without getting beheaded. After all, the King was known to be merciless and he had shown that to me already when he took me away from Aunt Maya. “What I mean to ask is how come you suddenly decided to bring a Hybrid to the palace when all we’ve ever done is kill them on sight?” The guy tested his luck once more. “Leave Kayce. I am not answerable to you.” Was all he said as the man, Kayce’s footsteps echoed on the other end, signalling his leave. Slowly, the sound receded until silence reigned once again. I waited and waited for another set of footsteps but nothing came. I was about to give up and figure out something else when I heard his voice, clearer than ever as if he was right next to the wall on the other side. “You can come out now.” An icy chill went down my spine.
