15. EPIC Victory

A crowd of people filled the sidewalk in front of the Humboldt County Courthouse in Eureka. It was a gray slab built in the 1950s adjoining the five-story county jail with a mural of a giant lumberjack in the foreground, his axe dwarfing the redwoods behind him. Three non-native palm trees were planted out front. Jessica Wild, surrounded by reporters, exited the building into a crowd of demonstrators, followed by Atlas Jamison and his lawyers. The crowd was a mix of EPIC activists and supporters, mostly dressed in jeans and sneakers, Earth First! activists, in dreadlocks and Birkenstocks, and loggers, in plaid, jeans, and boots. The crowd immediately formed circles around Atlas and Jessica waving signs like “Stop Sacrificing Virgins” and “Save a Logger, Kill a Tree.” Mixed into the crowd
