Anastasia I still can’t sit down for a minute without thinking about what happened that day, why would someone decide to kill a fellow human being? In the broad daylight, do they even identify as a human? Now that I have no job, there was no reason for me to continue staying in a place I can’t afford, I didn’t like Eric’s idea but after mind rubbing on it, I realized it was just for my sake. Moving day was yesterday and I still feel sore all over, I woke up with tons of ideas in my head because I truly want to do everything. But I love cleaning, housekeeping and everything related to it, it’s a passion that has become a part of me and I regret not going in the line after my graduation. Who knows, I would’ve become a millionaire now. Hehe I laughed at myself, talking to myself sounds soothing until there’s someone watching from a corner. It took me long to realize that Eric was right in front of me. “Oh!” I gasped, trying to catch my breath. “Did you see a ghost?” He asked, throwing his suit on the floor and sitting beside me on the couch. I furrowed my brows. “No but you literally scared me” “I’m so f*****g hungry” He said, leaning back whilst placing his hands on my thigh. “You could’ve grabbed something on your way” I replied. “That’s a waste!” He blurted. “why should I buy unnecessarily overpriced takeouts when I have foodstuffs in the house?” He slightly turned to face me. “I wouldn’t mind if this came from a poor person but you ???” I gawked at him. “I didn’t work so hard to spend it like it’s paper” I pull a face at him, I just want to leave his sight. After a long silence between us, he gets up to go into his bedroom. “Can you make something edible for me?” He asked. “No, I can’t” I refused blatantly, grabbed my phone and walked out on him. I know it’s hard for him, I know he’s worked so hard to be where he is right now but this behavior he is emulating is just not it! I switched off the light as I walked into my room, reaching for my laptop and just scrolling the internet. Gone are the days when vacancy posts on the internet are legit, now there are just scams everywhere and I foolishly applied for every single one I encountered. My eyes stumbled upon a particular one which caught my attention so badly, I sat up to give it a serious concentration. “this can’t be real” I shook my head, it was obviously fake. I skimmed through the housekeeping job which was apparently going to pay thrice than I used to earn in a month. I felt scared to apply because they asked for too much personal details and even though I filled it, I don’t plan on submitting. I was still on this when my phone buzzed, it was a personal ringing tone so I know who it was. Anastasia: Hello Melindaaaaa! Caller: Anastasia, this is your aunt, Trisha’s mom. I had a quick reaction on my face, I was so concerned about this yet patient. Anastasia: Hello Aunty, Where is my mom? Aunty: She’s in the bathroom and she is… My mom interrupted before she could finish her sentence. “Why are you answering my call?” I let out a soft sigh of relief, my thoughts had already gone wild thinking something happened to her but my aunt was just being nosy as usual, using my moms absence to her advantage. My mom, I call her Melinda, She used to be a single mom until she found love 2 years ago and I’m indifferent about her decision. I just love the fact that she doesn’t expect me to do anything for her, she just wants to hear that I’m coping well. Melinda: Anastasia, are you there? Anastasia: I’m here, I’m sorry I haven’t been calling you lately, work is hectic. Melinda: As long as you’re okay and drinking enough water, I don’t ask for more, I have things to do, I’ll call you later. She ended the call before I could say more and whilst trying to drop my phone, I mistakenly clicked on the submit button. “Wtf!” I screamed, I could hear the echo for about 3 more minutes. Eric ran in and stopped at the door when he realized that I was okay. “You’re not living alone!” He warned and rolled his eyes before leaving. I couldn’t say more and I don’t dare tell him what I did. I literally just submitted an application that asked if I was a virgin, if I had a boyfriend or if I was living alone and it is just a housekeeping job. Why would they need all those details? ** The least I could do to show appreciation for living in his house was feed him and I was also hungry so I had no choice. He wasn’t working late tonight which gave us chance to watch something beautiful whilst cuddling on his couch and that’s where we slept. The next morning. The sun rays peeping in between the curtain latched on my face and I immediately felt it. I stretched tiredly whilst gazing around as Eric wasn’t with me when I woke up, the buzzing noise from my phone got me squeezing up my face as I thought it was my alarm. I picked up the phone to turn it off only to see a message popping up on my screen, I rubbed my eyes to be sure I was seeing well. It read thus; “Miss Clark, your application was successfully received and I’m glad to tell you that you’ve been hired, please be at the location attached to this email by 9:00am today to begin work” “Am I dreaming??” I asked myself several times, but the only way to find out is to actually go and see what happens. Few minutes later. I was out of my room, casually dress in a graphic white tee and a denim trouser with a pair of white sneakers. I let my hair down and I feel so happy by my appearance. Getting to the location wasn’t an issue because it was located at one of the most popular yet secretive area in Chicago. I walked to the desk staff immediately I arrived at the penthouse, she asked for a code which I provided as I was already told in the email. The staff was generous enough to assist me to the elevator, we parted ways with a smile. I tried so hard not to show how I was grinning from ear to ear when I met the man who was in charge of the penthouse. “You don’t look 23” I stared blankly at him, the first statement by him caught me off guard. “What?” I finally said something. “Don’t mind me, you can call me Silas” I forced a smile, he just had to mess with my thoughts. I followed closely behind him, whilst staring at every single thing I saw. He placed his palm on the door and it opened right after acknowledging his finger print. Amazing! I could swear that I look like a lost lamb right now. Oh my God! The view inside the penthouse was magnificent yet mysterious, beautiful vintage portraits hanged in almost every corner and the decoration was just too beautiful. But this place doesn’t look dirty, does anyone even stay here? “Miss Clark?” “Miss Clark??” “My bad, I’m so sorry” I laughed awkwardly. “Please keep your mind on your business here, you can get fired by walking on a wrong path” He warned, I sensed so much seriousness in his tone so immediately composed myself. He spent almost an hour telling me the rules and guidelines to help me in doing my job and then we proceed to touring the whole place. He suddenly stopped and I almost hit my head on his back. “This room,” he pursed. “On no account should you go inside” “Even when I clean the other rooms?” I butted in before he could conclude. “Yes, leave it out of your sight like it doesn’t exist and don’t carelessly touch things…” He is now facing me. “If anything should be damaged or lost, it’ll be deducted from your salary! That’s all for now, you can get to work” He handed over the manual which he read from to me and I bowed him out. I stretched tiredly, my throat is dried and I feel so tired when I haven’t done anything. I gave the room a last look before I went to kitchen to get a drink. The kitchen was too exquisite to be real, it’s 2 times bigger than my bedroom. I couldn’t find a cup to get water and when I finally did, it was in a place where I could barely reach. Fortunately for me, I found a stool which I climbed on to get the cup. My hands trembled as I still had to lift my toes before reaching it, the moment I grabbed it by a edge, my legs slipped and the cup flew from my hands, but before I could land on the floor, a hand stopped by my waist.
