Chapter 1 – I Don’t Need a Hero!
“There are half a million dollars on this card. It should be enough to cover your mother’s medical expenses for a year. I know things have been difficult since your father went…”  The deep voice felt like it  penetrated through to my soul as I sat outside the coffee shop, cradling my latte in my hands.        I raised my head to look where the voice had come from, not sure who had spoken to me, and there stood opposite me was the Alpha Dominic of one of our neighbouring packs.  Why was he offering this to me? I took a gulp, in person I have to say that this man was really good-looking. Dressed in a white shirt, and black trousers, outlining his masculine, muscular figure. The light pouring down, falling across the side of his face only going to further enhance his facial features making them more masculine and distinct. This man was handsome, there was no doubt. But why was he offering to help me?       I looked to him, raising my eyebrows slightly, partially in question, partially in challenge. I see Alpha Dominic smirk slightly before he pursed his thin lips, moving closer to me, and speaking once more “ I have only one request, break up with your boyfriend.”      I look at him in shock. Alpha Dominic Gillespie of Moon Valley Pack. Hailed as a god within his own pack, obviously, but also within the neighbouring packs too, and the business world locally for his business acumen and knowledge. The eldest son of a wealthy family, but also an Alpha family, made him a very important man. I would assume this makes him used to getting what he wanted. Well, he would be very disappointed, because he would not be getting what he wanted here.      “Sorry Alpha Dominic, but I don’t think so. I am different from you. I don’t treat people like objects” and with that I stood to walk away, my anger building at his cheek for even suggesting what he did!      I walked back to the door of the shopping mall, only to find the door being held open by Alpha Dominic himself, a sly smirk on his face. I did my best to avoid eye contact with him and walked through the doorway. And while I did Alpha Dominic let out a little chuckle before speaking “I think you will soon see Miss Meadows that integrity is the most worthless thing in the world” he winked at me before walking away.        I froze, struggling to believe what he had said to me! Miss? He is my age, maybe a few years older at most, yet he talks to me like I am somebody many years his junior and below him. Stepping outside once more for some fresh air, needing to calm myself down. As I do I hear my phone buzzing from inside of my handbag, and rummage around to find it so I am able to answer it. I look down at my phone and see that it is Rayne. My heart drops at the sight of her caller ID, knowing it cannot be good news. I feel a sense of inexplicable uneasiness as I answer her call.          Even over the phone, Rayne’s voice displays signs of anxiety which only adds to my unease. “Miss, please come to the hospital quickly. Something happened to your mother. The debtor just came to the hospital. There was a dispute. Your Mother has been hurt. She is being sent to the emergency treatment room”        My heart is pounding in my chest as I race to the edge of the road to hail a cab, needing to get to the hospital as quickly as possible. Why was this happening to us? Ever since things started to go wrong in pack, then my father’s company going bankrupt, and him taking on the debt before it all became too much and he took his own life.    As a pack Beta you’d think the Alpha would take on the responsibility, or at least some of it. Even the business was split between the two of them. But no, Alpha Jacob was more than happy for my father to foot the blame. Take on the debt. Try to save our pack. Oh, how that had failed. Leaving me and my mother in such a mess.      The thing was the loan sharks he had gone to in the end, they turned out to be not so honest and were now chasing me and my mother for the money my father owed them. And they seemed to come trying to cause issues every day. I thought moving treatment centres for my mother may help, but clearly, they had done their research and tracked her down once more. There seemed to be no way of escape! No matter how hard we tried… or was there?      As the cab reached the entrance to the hospital grounds, I was sobbing down the phone to Rayne, and I heard her sigh.       “Oh Miss” she instantly said “Try not to worry too greatly. They are taking good care of her now”.       “But where are the fools who did this to her?! Knowing she is already ill as well. They are disgraceful!” I say with venom, though it is the loan sharks I am angry at, for once more hurting my mother. And of course, they are disgraceful, the way they had acted over recent months had alone proven that, without what they had just done to my mother…        “They are gone, the police came and took them away my dear. While it is not a long-term solution, it has taken them away for now. Your mother is safe for now. But the hospital said if it continues to happen like this, we would need to look for a new facility.” Rayne says sadly.        I cannot blame them; they would not want trouble on their hospital site. And trouble is what we seemed to bring. It appeared to follow us everywhere now. They found us no matter where we tried to hide, and this was not even something of our own doing. This was the fault of my father and the good for nothing Alpha of our pack.        I simply nod despite the fact she cannot yet see me, thought I know she will be awaiting my arrival at the hospital. “I know” I sit in the cab waiting for the driver to park up to allow me to get out. Closing my eyes for just a moment to calm myself. To try to balance my mind.      When did life become so complicated? I used to have a life so carefree and wonderful. One with no worries of money or clothing or even food. How times change. Now my life seems to be one big constant worry since my father died. And it feels like I have to deal with everything by myself. Perhaps it would be better if I too went to join him? But then I think of my mother, and I realise that she needs me. That things can turn around for us if we try. I need to find a way.      As I step from the cab, all the words from Rayne and the Dr before her, run through my mind. The doctor’s words were undoubtedly a bolt out of the blue for me. I could not help but start to recall the words Alpha Dominic had said to me during the day, literally less than hour ago while I sat in the coffee shop. He had to have heard of my predicament, though how I do not know. Yet he expects me to take his money and do as he says? Oh no, it cannot be like this. This is not something I can lower myself to.  I shook my head to remind myself, but then, what can I do otherwise?    And just as I moved toward the doors of the hospital, the sound of a car braking suddenly came from beside me. I turned to the side to look… it was Alpha Dominic.
