CHAPTER 10 THE WIZENED OLD lady from last week was standing behind the counter, doing a crossword puzzle, and she grinned when she saw Joe. Who wouldn’t? “Same as last week, love?” she asked. Joe looked at me and raised his eyebrows. “Yes, please.” I hadn’t contracted salmonella or anything, so I figured it was safe. Not content with opening the door, Joe pulled out my chair as well. The whole chivalry thing felt odd to me. The accountant had prided himself on working for an equal opportunities firm, and looking back, he’d been a prick to everyone, male or female.
