I SHOULD HAVE gone into work, but I couldn’t face it. Not yet. After seven years, three or four sick days wasn’t too much to ask, was it?
Well, somebody thought so.
My phone buzzed at nine thirty with Reggie’s name, and I resisted the temptation to send it to voicemail.
“Are you okay? Berkeley said you’ve still got food poisoning, but Sally reckons you’re having your appendix out, and I also heard a rumour you’re pregnant.”
Oh, for goodness’ sake. “Uh, it’s actually none of those.”
“Then what happened? Did your gym dude wear you out? Don’t worry, I haven’t told anyone about him.”
I gave him a condensed version of Dane’s antics, finishing with the news that he was still on the loose. When Joe spoke to the police first thing, they reckoned he’d seen the activity around Hero
