Chapter 4 I’d managed to all but get out of family holidays for the last fifteen or so years. I’d taken the job with the State Troopers in the fall after I turned twenty, and as the new guy at my station, I’d pulled the s**t shifts for the first couple of years. After that, I’d gotten used to working the holidays. I liked the extra pay, and I liked that the guys with families could spend them with their loved ones. I was always leaving a gathering to start a shift, or just coming off one, which meant I could claim exhaustion. My family was borrowed, and as much as I enjoyed Joe and his immediate family, the larger Mastriano clan was overwhelming. Throw in Angela’s side of the family, and I was ready to run and hide.
