“Ha! Ha! Ha! You should have seen Kadiem running like hell when Gorgon got loose. His ass on fire, and no water to be found,” Benjirah laughed hysterically.
Dougaff laughed just as hard, as he said, “Serves him right for calling him Gorgi. Everyone knows that hellhound hates that name.”
Remior nodded, taking a drink of his ice coffee. “True enough. I got lucky. Gorgon gave me a fire shower, but at least I was near a pond. Which reminds me, why does he always have to burn our ass?”
“Because it’s his way of telling you that you’re being an ass,” Binjirah replied.
“Anyway, I’m going to be late for work if I don’t get a move on. Tanzi is scheduled for transfer to the Outer Darkness chambers today,” Benjirah said drinking down his iced mint tea.
“I still don’t know how you enjoy working with those beasts,” Dougaff said with a shake of his head.
“The guy has a death wish. He must. No one volunteers to work with the hellhounds,” Remoir answered with a laugh.
Benjirah replied, “They are sweet and adorable as long as you don’t try and cross the door they are guarding.”
“Benjirah, you have to be a coffee bean short of a cappuccino,” Dougaff said with a laugh.
“Good thing I don’t like coffee,” Benjirah said without missing a beat.
Remoir laughed. “You love to come to a coffee shop but hate to drink it. Makes as much sense as you wanting to work with the hellhounds.”
“I love the smell of coffee. The hounds love how they smell and look when I’m done with them, and that makes me feel loved. See, it’s simple,” Benjirah answered.
“Yeah, I don’t think Chax agrees with your line of work,” Dougaff teased.
Benjirah smiled. “Tell me about it. I went to leave the house today and he chewed up my soap brush.”
“You spoil him,” Dougaff automatically replied.
“I do not,” Benjirah exclaimed.
Dougaff and Remoir looked at each other, rolling their eyes. Remoir replied, “Chax is an Armelian. He eats only worms. Now you could feed him earthworms, but you special order grub all the time.”
“They’re more nutritious and puffier,” Benjirah defended.
“You get baby soap to wash his wings and then you condition them,” Remoir continued.
“It makes them soft and shiny, you know that,” Benjirah said in exasperation.
Dougaff laughed. “Just admit it, you spoil that naked armadillo looking thing.”
Standing up Benjirah said, “Don’t call Chax a thing, and Chax was a gift from Gorgon after I gave him a mani-pedi. Maybe I spoil him a little, but the poor guy was alone in the tombs of lost souls forever. A little spoiling here and there is not a big deal. Now I have got to go. I’m going to be late as it is.” Just as Benjirah was about to leave, a fierce wind hit him, knocking him backwards into the table he had just left. The feeling of a rolling wave of heat encompassed his body and everything went black, then tiny lights began to sparkle as unbelievable pain gripped through him, knocking the breath right out of him and dropping him to his knees.
Benjirah could hear his friends calling his name, but he couldn’t answer as he slowly started to feel the pain subside.
Shaking his head, Benjirah realized he was on the floor and both Dougaff and Remoir were looking at him as if he was one of the three headed hounds. “What happened?”
Dougaff rasped, “You’ve been chosen.”
“Chosen? What are you—” Then understanding hit Benjirah. “No! I can’t be the one chosen to protect the demon realm. I’m not a warrior, I’m a glorified pet caretaker.”
Remoir helped Benjirah to his feet. “You might be caretaker to the hellhounds, but you are also the Chosen Omega Demon, making you the protector of all demons.”
“Oh wow, that means you get three mates, Benjirah! How cool is that? I wonder who they’ll be?” Dougaff joyfully said.
“Well, they won’t be you two. Benjirah come. Our mating must take place now,” Lundgard, who had been sitting a table over, said pulling him towards the door.
Benjirah tried to get the warrior to let him go when another muscular demon warrior grabbed him by the other arm, yanking him away from Lundgard. “He’s a little scrawny for my liking, but I will sacrifice myself by making him mine and keeping him safe from those who would wish to harm him.
“I don’t want to go with either of you. Leave me alone,” Benjirah argued, trying to get the big i***t to let him go.
Benjirah was lifted off the ground by one of the largest warriors in the demon realm city.
“Coran, put me down.”
“You are mine to protect. I am the logical choice of all demons to keep the Omega Demon safe,”
Coran stated turning to go out the door.
Seconds later what seemed like every demon in the realm attacked Coran at once, all fighting, scratching, and biting to get to Benjirah. Keeping low, Benjirah crawled away from the mass, only to find himself being yanked on once more.
Benjirah tried to pull back, only to hear Dougaff hiss, “Come on, Benjirah. Remoir is waiting.”
Running out of the building and down the street, Benjirah heard people gasping and whispering,
“The Omega Demon.”
“Dougaff, where are we going?” Benjirah asked as he was drawn into an alley. A shimmering silver light was at the end where Remoir stood.
“I’m losing it, Dougaff. Hurry!” Remoir said, sounding exhausted.
Coran and the others were shouting his name as Dougaff shoved Benjirah towards Remoir. “Go into the portal. It will take you to safety.”
“But what about you two? When leader Talahan discovers what you have done you will be put to death,” Benjirah argued.
Dougaff laughed. “My father might ground me, but he will not kill me, and he won’t touch Remoir. Like you, he is too special to our people. Now go before the others get you. Unless you want a forced mating?”
Benjirah sniffled and took a couple of seconds to hug his two best friends. “I will miss you both.
Please take care of Chax.” Then he jumped into the portal just as the crowd turned into the alley.
