Helena’s Point of View Thank goodness that week is over, I had been so bored, stressed and sad.  The Loneliness had been all consuming after the fake date with him that shall remain nameless, and well I had spent my days just watching shitty rom coms, and crying because I want my own happy ending, and my life love life, let’s face it was totally crap! I had not heard anymore from Elliot, and I did not have his number to thank him for the flowers, so I had accepted the situation that this was never meant to be, but it did not stop me dreaming about him, every god dam night.  They say time heals all wounds, well it was 6 days since the Engagement party, and I was still moping around at the loss of a dam escort! this is a new low for me. The kids would be back, full of life and taking up every second of my time at four tonight, so I decided to do a search for jobs online to fill in the time. They are back to school come Tuesday, why Tuesday? who knows, a teacher inset day, I mean they have had 6 bloody weeks why have an extra day! That is the question on every parents’ lips, let us be honest! I logged onto the laptop, and clicked on the usual jobsites, putting in Part Time office work in my search criteria.  I needed something close by, and only a few hours per day to fit in with the school run. As I scrolled down the vacancies, something caught my eye. Assistant to the CEO PA Masters Group required, the role is part time Monday to Friday 9:30 am to 13:30 pm.  Reporting to the personal assistant for the CEO this role requires an in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power point, and Access Databases and project management.  The ideal candidate will have touch typing skills, along with excellent time management, and will be required to help with the day-to-day workings in a busy office environment. You will be expected to help the current PA in all duties and tasks including typing, filing, creating spreadsheets, and Diary management for the CEO of the group. Qualifications 5 GCSE’s grade C or above, along with relevant Microsoft qualifications for office software. You must have at least 3 years experience in a similar environment. This position is offering an immediate start and will pay £20,000 per annum to the right candidate. Please send in your C.V to hr@mastersgroup.co.uk It sounded perfect, and the wage was huge, for an assistant, it must be pro rata, even so, it is a lot more than I would expect, the only issue, I do not have the 3 years experience in an office environment, I had 2 years, before falling pregnant with Steven.  Dam, why can I not catch a break. I continued my search, but I kept on returning to that job.  Masters Group office was located in the city centre, only 20 minuet bus journey from my house, I could have dropped the kids off at school and got to work with time to spare, it was perfect, but hey what is the point of dwelling on it, I do not have the relevant experience in years of service. Feeling a little disheartened, I rang my Mum, just because when you feel shitty there is nobody like your Mum to help chase the blues of life away.  It was now 15:00 hours here, and in San Diego it would be only 6 am there, a little early, but I needed my Mam, so made the call, two rings and cut off and she will call me back, that was our standing arrangement. The phone rang twice, and I hung up, a couple of minutes later my phone buzzed into action. “Hi Helena, is everything okay?” Mum sounded worried for me and I felt a pang of guilt for ringing so early. “Yes, sorry I know it is early, but I need a Mum hug” I said sadly, I would not tell her about the fake date, as I am sure they did not give me extra money to buy a man but did want to talk about my job woes. “What’s wrong?” My mum asked gently, I knew she was between a rock and a hard place, she wanted to be with Dad, but also felt so guilty she was not here with me, helping me out. “Just fed up, looking for work, found the perfect job, but they want three years’ experience which I do not have, I could manage to say two years at a push, but not the three” my voice despondent even to my own ears. “Helena, Just apply, what is the worst that can happen? They say no, well then you are no worse off, but they may say yes, then you are better off” Mum always had the best outlook on life, I wish I could be so positive. “Yeah, but I don’t think I can face yet another rejection in my life Mum” I sighed “Stop this, you have allowed that bastard Cameron to cloud your life to long, you need to get out of your self pity and just try, if you do not try you will never know, so I say again Just apply!” her voice was a little stern with me, so I knew she meant business, I sighed, it would be a perfect job for me and the kids. “Okay, but I doubt I will even get an interview!” “you may not, but at least you tried” she said again being forceful with me, she was right, I would never know just sat here looking at the job description. “The kids are back soon, so yeah, I will go now and send off my CV, thanks Mum Love you.” “Love you too, will ring you later, oh Dad said hi and just bloody do it” she giggled. There was a pattern, given I am a daddy’s girl, if she tells me DAD SAID, then I would do it, and well she uses it to her advantage! “Yeah, tell him I will. bye” Taking a deep breath, I copied the email address, and attached my CV, with a cover letter, telling them that I had taken a break from employment to have my children, but was now looking to start my career path again, and how I would love the opportunity to work with such a great organisation… you know the usual stuff you write when begging for a job! And then before I changed my mind again, I hit send. The kids arrived back from Cameron’s parents like a whirl wind and within five minutes my amazingly tidy house was covered in toys and the TV had Frozen on whilst Robyn sang “Let it Go” at the top of her lungs dancing just like Elsa.  It never failed to make me smile, she was such a cutie.  Steven was a little quieter than normal, so I went and grabbed him in for a mummy cuddle, and he soon brightened up “I missed you Mum” he whispered. “I missed you more baby boy” I smiled down at my son. “What would you like for tea?” I asked him, giving him the choice of food, because he liked nice healthy food, where as Robyn was a nightmare wanting only fish fingers and chips when she was given the option! “Can I have mash potato, with sprouts and chicken” he smiled up at me… yes, my boy is weird his favourite food is sprouts! “Would you like to help me” I asked, and he quickly ran and got his chair dragging it into the kitchen to stand on, he loved nothing more than scraping potatoes with his peeler. We were happily preparing the food, when my phone rang, and I answered it almost immediately expecting it to be Mum checking I had sent my CV off. “Hello, is that Helena Braithwaite?” a lady’s voice said in a very professional tone. “Yes, it is, how can I help?” “My name is Johanna Samuels, I am the HR manager here at Masters Group, I have just opened your application for the assistants roll we have advertised, and I would like to invite you for an interview on Tuesday at 10 am, with myself and Zara Campbell, however before I do, can I ask would you be able to start the position next week if you were successful?” I was in shock, wow, just wow I had only sent off the email a couple of hours ago and it is a dam Sunday! they must be desperate for the position to be filled.  “yes, of course, that would be no problem at all” I answered trying not to sound desperate. “Great, then we will see you on Tuesday at 10, please come to reception and ask for me, Johanna Samuels, I will send you an email with all the details, I must advise you, there will be a test of your Microsoft skills, especially on Excel, so please do prepare for that, I look forward to meeting you then Helena”. “Yes of course, thank you, I will see you Tuesday at 10 am” I HAVE AN INTERVIEW! And for the first time since last week I do not think about Elliot the Escort! ………………………………………………………………………….. I spent every free moment, on my laptop over the weekend, practising my skills, then on Monday, I dropped the kids over to Belinda for the kids to have a play date with Ryan, and rushed into town.  Using the refunded date money, I went to purchase some interview and work clothes, getting a couple of shift dresses, another skirt and a few more shirts, before returning back home and picking up the kids. “Thank you so much Belinda, have they been okay?” “Yes, they have been great, are you prepared for your interview tomorrow?” she kindly asked me. “I am not sure, I am panicking a little truth be known” I smiled at her “You will be fine, let me know how it goes?” “I will do, and thank you Belinda.” “Anytime” I headed back home with the kids, they had an early bath, and bed, so I could do more prep work, and try on my new office attire, and once finished I took myself off for an early night myself.  It was 4 am and I do not think I managed any sleep at all! I huffed and turned again, trying to control the excited feeling I had, and get at least a couple of hours.  But it was to no avail, sleep was not my friend this night! So, I decided to get an early start, and had a shower, washing my hair, taking advantage of the fact my two little babies were fast asleep.  The warm water soothed me, and helped calm my nervous, finished I headed back to my room and dried my hair, debating on weather I should wear it up or down, I settled on a high ponytail, because running around with the kids and getting them to school would result in frizz city.  I then sat and made use of the make up I had bought for the party, and I was shaking just as much as I had that night… that night…the night that I met… oh pull yourself together, he is gone and you have an interview for your dream job, keep your head in the game, I told myself. I decided not to change into my black shift dress until just before I had to leave, because knowing my luck the kids would get their breakfast all over it! And well that would not be a good look for the professional, assistant extraordinaire Helena I was going to portray. Finally, Robyn and Steven were up, fed watered, ready for School and I put on my interview dress, grabbing my coat, we rushed out the door to make the short walk to their school.  I met up with Belinda on the way, and she happily chatted about nothing in particular, I think it was an act of kindness to take my mind off my pre interview nerves. After dropping the kids off, I headed for the bus, and making myself breath all the way into the city centre, I eventually found myself outside the tall 9 story building. It had once upon a time been a government tax office, however a few years ago the Masters group saved the tower block from being condemned and invested back into the city, creating jobs for the deprived area it was not the prettiest building in the world, but it stood for stability and economic growth for our city.  I hesitated slightly before entering, the time 9:45, I was 15 minuets early, well better than one second late! Composing myself one last time, took another breath, and calling on my courage, I headed into the reception area. “Hi, my name is Helena Braithwaite, I have an interview at 10 am with Johanna Samuels” I smiled at the blonde-haired lady, who smiled back at me, she seemed lovely, I had to admit.   “yes, please take a seat Helena, Johanna will be with you shortly.” I turned to the seated area, and taking another deep breath sat down, and waited.
