ALPHA LYALL.
"We have waited for an heir for so long, Alpha Lyall. It is time for you to make a move." Fallon Blython, one of my council elders, spoke.
I was seated in the courts, flanked by the Chippendale chairs with elders seated in them. Once again, I had awoken from my sleep to listen to these men remind me that I needed an heir if I wanted my lineage to rule for generations.
"And what move am I expected to make?" I asked, my voice conveying no emotions.
"A breeder."
Scoffing, I stroked my chin. Of course, Sheila hadn't been able to conceive since we got married. It had been years of waiting for a miracle and even she was starting to get worried.
"A breeder?"
"It's the only alternative, your majesty. I understand that it might be a hard decision for you but it is the best and only option."
I pushed to my feet, already tired of sitting here and hearing the same thing over and over again. "There is a feast today. This meeting has been rescheduled."
"But your majesty—" Lord Timottee began.
I stopped him with a raise of my hand. "I am glad that you all are concerned but there are other matters I have to attend to. I will take my leave."
I walked through the aisle, aware of their heavy gazes on me but I did not care. There was so much pressure coming from them and I was really tired of hearing the same thing every day.
There were other important things to worry about. Like Mason being an attendee. We were never on good terms and honestly, I wasn't sure I wanted to see him at the feast. It was going to cause more harm than good. Uncle Kendrick was far more tolerable. I had to give it to Serene. She was the only one who could keep him in check. To the outsiders, he was brutally in love with her but I knew their union was a really toxic one. Well, who was I to say anything?
Just as I climbed the ornate steps leading to the east wing, I caught sight of Igor, my Beta, coming down the steps and as soon as he saw me, his eyes lit up.
"Lyall, I didn't know you were at the courtroom until I came this morning. Why wasn't I informed?"
"I wasn't expecting a meeting to be held either. I woke up to one of the guards informing me that they were all waiting at the courtroom."
"And what did they talk about? The usual?" He asked as he followed beside me.
"Of course, the usual."
"And what are you going to do about it? You know, as much as they are being pricks about this, they are right."
I stopped in my tracks and turned to him. "Right about getting a breeder? Can you even hear yourself?"
Igor sighed and raised both of his hands in surrender. "Alright. I know you are not a polygamous man and you care about Sheila enough not to get her hurt. But let's weigh this. You are not just anyone. You are the Alpha King and separated from the crowd. There are sacrifices that need to be made to keep your lineage in royalty and as much as it doesn't feel right to you, it is the only way."
"Leave me alone, Igor. Go back to whatever you were doing before you saw me." I replied, my voice going notches lower as I neared my study.
"But—"
"Igor!" I snapped. He nodded immediately and backed away. I pushed the door and walked in before locking it behind me. I wasn't ready to entertain anyone right now.
A feast was being held this evening and I had sent out invitations to other Packs, inviting important people. This was also an opportunity for me to see the slaves that had been coming on for the past few months. A new batch entered weeks ago and I was ready to sell them off for either money, raw materials or even ally-ship during times of war.
It was funny how I didn't need an alley of the sort. Over the years, I had steadily built a reputation for myself. The Silver Water Pack was the most feared Pack in history, amassing so much strength and wealth. Every pack that had an affiliation with us were the luckiest as we didn't associate with everyone. We had destroyed Packs and taken lands and resources from weaker Packs. It was why I was treated with so much respect and fear. No one dared start a war with us unless they were signing a death note.
With all of the wealth I had amassed, one thing still bothered me. One thing still gave me sleepless nights and had me questioning my masculinity. The inability to have a child. It greatly bothered me. I had been married to Sheila for five years and she was yet to give me a child.
It was the reason why I had been called upon this morning. At first, the elders were understanding when she didn't conceive a child in the first year of our marriage. The second was strange but they still kept quiet but from the third year, it was always brought up in meetings. Sheila had gone for sorts of medical checkups to see what was wrong but nothing ever worked and now, I was reminded of the fact that I needed an heir with every waking moment.
It was greatly disturbing that a man of breast strength like me had the inability to father a son. A child, even.
Today, I had been reminded once again that my own people were going to question my masculinity. They were going to see this as a weakness and it was scary. For a man who only exudes strength, being seen as anything other than that made me afraid of everything.
Sighing, I stood to my feet and walked over to the window, over to the decanter containing cognac. I poured myself a glass and watched as farmers worked in the field. I had all I wanted. Hell, I could get anything I wanted but getting Sheila Pregnant was as hard as anything.
The thought of Mason's child becoming Heir if he ever fathered one scared the hell out of me. He had always wanted the throne from the onset and this was an opportunity for him to claim it even if it meant waiting till his child became Alpha King.
I shook that thought off my body. None of that was going to happen.
Gulping down the rest of my drink, I left my study to get ready for the feast tonight. It was still as clear as day but I had to be at the tailor's for my tuxedo to be fitted.
I had someone prepare my horse as I got ready to leave. As soon as I was done, I made my way out of the Palace in a hurry. I didn't catch the sight of the maid coming from the corner and we bumped into each other, her soft gasp filling the area.
"I'm sorry, your Majesty!" She bowed, lowering her head until I pushed past her and continued my way out.
Something felt strange. Like a zing of energy shooting up my spine when we bumped into each other. I waved it off and made my way to the carriage before riding off.
