Babysitting

NARRATOR Adjusting her glasses, Katherine shook her thoughts away as she chose to focus on her work. A few minutes later, the men walked out of the room. While Rock was in the front, Alex was diligently walking behind him, pausing when his boss did. Katherine felt her heart somersault in her chest when an intimidating aura sent a cold shiver down her spine. She swallowed hard, and quickly stood up when she saw her boss standing not far from her desk. His compelling eyes pierced into hers that was fidgeting behind the glasses on the bridge of her nose. Only that, she would love to be compelled into doing something more obscure with the man.. Her careful and sceptical eyes studied the expression on the man's straight face. 'Was he here to take me to the appointment?' she couldn't stop the tinge of excitement that blossomed within her. But reality mercilessly butchered her hopes. "I would be having a visitor, Katherine. Make sure to take good care of her while I'm away. " That was all the man said, before striding away. "Y-yes sir" Katherine stuttered disappointedly. She suddenly felt like a glimmering light in her life had been bitterly quenched even before it could barely shine for her. This was her boss' way of saying 'I don't f*****g need you anymore!' But would it kill him to address what he had told her on the phone yesterday? "Hmmm" she sighed dejectedly, taking a seat on her chair. After all the thinking and imagining the whole fake scenario of the appointment, all the sleepless night! Well, it was on her because she'd taken it too far. Too seriously, that she forgot that it was an ordinary business appointment. Nothing else. But who the heck is the visitor? "Who else could it be apart from that annoying wife of my boss?" Katherine sneered bitterly. She must've been the reason for the canceled appointment, yet, she couldn't blame anyone. She had taken it too far. The whole place was suddenly quiet in an awkward way after her boss had left with his assistant. In reality, that's how it had always been, even when others were around. But the anticipation of the mentioned 'visitor' made Katherine a little anxious and unsettled. Although part of her hoped and wished that the woman wouldn't show up, the rational part of her that still knew what reality would be, she wanted to just receive the woman quickly and get over with it. Well, just like she had anticipated, the quiet atmosphere was suddenly interrupted by a sudden thud of shoes. Obviously, it was a woman's heel. "She's here!" Katherine whispered to herself as she looked up from her computer, tilting her head towards the area the sound was coming from. She swallowed nervously. She was a little scared of facing the woman. What if she finds out about the huge secret she was hiding? What would she do if she found out that she was falling for her husband? "Hey, don't think too much? How would she find out when she's not a spirit?" In the end, she tried her best to get the deceiving thoughts off her head. There was no way Rose would know what was deeply hidden inside her heart. Her thoughts were only making it hard for her. Katherine quickly stood up as she saw the woman approaching her desk. She adjusted her glasses, used her spit to moisturize her lips as she walked around her table to meet the woman. She looked calm and collected, almost like a calm before a storm. But in Katherine's case, the storm was already in process, her inner self was petrified, intimidated and trembling by the sight of the woman that reeked of wealth, power and authority. Indeed, the difference was awfully clear; this was a woman that befitted her boss. Not a skinny girl like her. Rose was tall, her long brown hair must be very soft, no doubt. Her milk-white skin was glittering like that of a diamond. She was adorned in a striking blue gown which hugged her body tight, exposing her curved shape, her slender legs were on black heels that were the same color as her handbag. Everything in her body was damn expensive, which Katherine was sure of. But the woman's beauty made those things more outstanding. No wonder Mr. Rock was proud of his wife, he flaunted her everywhere. No woman could compare to her. No woman would match his caliber of person except Rose. Rose, on the other, tilted her head to the side, as she sceptically considered the creepy look from the secretary that was supposed to take good care of her. Katherine noticed this, and quickly realized herself. "I'm sorry, your husband- I mean, my boss is not around but he asked me to take good care of you, ma'am." "I know, my husband already told me." Katherine was speechless as she watched the woman with mouth wide open. She was slightly lost. "What are you doing? Won't you take me to his office?" "This way, ma'am." Katherine quickly replied, as she led the woman towards her boss' office. She couldn't understand what the occasion was. This wasn't the woman's first time visiting, it definitely won't be the last. However, Katherine couldn't seem to get used to the routine of showing the woman the room, every time she came to company. "Make yourself comfortable, ma'am, while I get you a cup of coffee." Katherine said, and without wasting time, she ran out of the room. Rose strided over to the couch and sat comfortably, placing her bag on the table. Heaving a sigh of relief, Katherine adjusted herself before heading for the coffee room. She didn't need to ask the woman what type of coffee she wanted, she already knew her favorite. While she was on her way, she felt a disturbing vibration in her body. She paused, then dipped her hand into the pocket of her dress and took out her phone. It was a text message from Hannah. Katherine frowned the moment she read the contents of the message. "Are you back?" Katherine hissed, "don't even start. I didn't leave the premises with him." her eyes darkened as she replied the message. "Why? What happened?" Just as she was about to put her phone back into her pocket, another message came from Hannah. Katherine pouted with a sigh, "His favorite assistant, Alex, decided to show up. Right now, I'm babysitting his wife!" After replying, Katherine decided to turn her phone into silent mode to avoid anymore disturbance from Hannah. The inquisitive lady would surely want to know more. She shook her head with a sigh, as she increased her pace. Katherine slowly opened the door to her boss' office and silently walked into the room. She looked at Rose and felt jealousy wash over her. Rose was obviously enjoying whatever she was reading from her phone. It seemed like she was chatting with her husband, judging from the way she was smiling so sweetly while blushing. "So he does have the time to chat even when he's in a meeting. They must be truly in love!" Katherine murmured silently, her mood turning sour. However, she couldn't help but feel genuine happiness for the two. Their love for each other was truly an exemplary one. The fact that she was in love with the man doesn't mean that she wouldn't be happy for him. As long as he was happy, then she was fine. "Did you say anything to me?" Katherine was taken aback when she heard this question from Rose. "Here is your coffee, ma'am" Katherine replied, "If you need any other thing, let me know." Katherine silently thought that Rose was down to earth today. She didn't seem to be in a bad mood, unlike before. Normally, the Rose she knows would never leave this place without stirring an unnecessary problem. But in the next second, Rose looked at Katherine from head to toe, before bursting into laughter. Katherine was rendered speechless. She didn't know what was funny at all as she stared at the woman in a dumbfounded state. Rose suddenly went silent, while her eyes roamed from Katherine's head to toe, making her feel small and less human. "You should know when to talk. You only get to ask questions while I give the order. Do you understand?" Katherine bit down her lips, as she looked into the woman's eyes and nodded, " Yes ma'am." "Good. Now, this coffee must be cold by now. Take it out and get me a fresh one," Rose commanded. Katherine nodded, "Yes ma'am." She picked up the cup of hot coffee and headed towards the door. Surely, this woman would never change. Katherine could only wish that her husband would return quickly so she would stop pestering her.
