Running through the unknown territory, I swerve over the giant rocks that are laid on the forest ground, adorning it with an interesting palette consisting of greys and different shades of green.
I have no idea how long I have been running for, and my legs feel like they're going to give out any second from now. I'm out of breath, but I can't stop now, I have to keep running. I no longer hear footsteps behind me, or the ferocious growls of angered Wolves. I had outrun them, and in my human form which is very peculiar considering, I don't even have the abilities of a full Werewolf.
Leria said I'm a Sprinter, which is a Werewolf with the heightened ability of speed... They are faster than regular Wolves, and can outrun a moving vehicle, travelling at top speed.
I stop running after being convinced that I'm safe, for now. I bend over, trying to catch my breath as I support myself by leaning on my knees, panting heavily and feeling my lungs burn as I wheeze out for breath.
"Water. There's a clearing nearby, listen." Leria speaks up told me as I place my hand over my pounding chest. I feel like I'm going to collapse. I've never done this much running before... the most I've done was maybe around the Packhouse a few times with Naomi, but that was it.
I try to concentrate on my surroundings but all I can hear is the sound of birds chirping and the wind making the leaves rustle. But, just when I am about to lose hope, I concentrate harder and in the distance, I can hear the calm flow of water making me sigh in relief. Finally, a source of hydration. Leria was right.
"Kayla, we have to go... It's not that far." Leria encourages me and it surprises me to see her be so caring about me.
"I'm sorry, but I'm exhausted, I don't know how long I've been running for..." I tell her, standing up straight and stretching out my back and legs slowly.
"Kayla." She growls, her tone firm which makes me huff in annoyance.
"Fine," I say and begin running again. At first, I'm jogging but I know I have to push myself harder and so I quicken my pace and in no time I'm running again. My feet are throbbing and I can feel my head thump painfully, immense pressure being put on my skull giving me a horrible migraine.
I'm not used to this kind of stuff. I'm not meant for this...
After about 5 minutes of running, I finally find the clearing. It's like a mini waterfall. The water easily flowed over the rocks, splashing at the bottom and making a soft soothing sound. I collapse just at the edge of the water and begin taking in hand fulls of water, gulping it down quickly in attempts of hydrating my body. After that I wash my face and sit up, leaning on my knees and looking up to the grey sky.
"That's better..." I say to myself, feeling the cool air on my cheeks. For a moment, I forget about everything. About what Damien did to me, said to me. About how he didn't want me as a Mate... About being the Pack Omega...
All the horrible things in my life are forgotten in this one moment.
I feel a sense of euphoria.
I'm at a peace of mind.
I'm relaxed.
Bone. Snap.
I shriek and stare down at my left arm which is facing the opposite direction. I scream in pain and horror as I stare at it before I feel my legs begin to pop themselves out of their original positions. What the hell was happening to me?!
"LERIA! IT HURTS, IT HURTS, MAKE IT STOP!" I cry out loud as I fall on my back and begin to roll across the dirt, trying to suppress the pain. My whole body is on fire, like I am being thrown into a vat of boiling oil. My temperature begins to skyrocket and my skin burns, sweat breaking across my entire body.
"Kayla, I can't control it! You're shifting!" She says in a panic. It is pure agony. Every bone in my body is breaking, snapping, realigning themselves into my Wolf form. I can feel the pain in every cell in my body.
I don't want this! I just want it all to stop!
I was told that the first shift is always the most painful, but I didn't know it would be like this. I feel like I was being ripped apart into a thousand pieces... like I'm dying.
"Ahhhhh!!" I scream as my spine snaps back and forth. I feel my spinal disks snap in different directions, popping in and out of place, making me scream even more.
"Keep your voice down, someone will hear you!" Leria shouts but I completely ignore her and scream even louder.
"But it hurts so much! Make it stop please, I don't want this!" I shriek as the pain becomes unbearable. I fall on my hands, barely being able to move any limb on my body. The pain slowly travels to my mouth as I feel my teeth ache will an even greater amount of pain. I cry even more once I feel my teeth getting longer, more specifically, my canines. I look down at my arms and watch as light brown hair begin to shoot out of the pores in my skin. My fingers snap themselves as well before razor-sharp nails grow out of them. It hurts like hell, as if tiny needles are being poked into every part of my body.
I feel a wave of dizziness hit my head, and a haze of darkness invade my vision. I'm blacking out. Is this supposed to happen? If it isn't, I'm in too much pain to care. I don't want to stay awake. Maybe when of if I wake up it will all be over. And I'll be back normal. At least I hope...
I soon hear the violent rustling of leaves and hurried footsteps, and it is then that I know, I have been found. It's all over... they're going to kill me...
