Triggers: death, cheating, car crash
The sirens... Oh God, I can hear the sirens.
I cry. I cry with pain, relief, fear, hope. I can't move my legs and my world is slowly getting darker. But the sirens are coming. I turn my head to look at the woman lying next to me. She is breathing. Hardly, but she is. All of this... at least it wasn't for nothing if she lives.
The sirens stop. I hear the sound of breaks and some screaming.
Then nothing.
Am I dead?
No, I don't think so. Death shouldn't smell like disinfectant and rubber gloves.
"She is starting to wake up. Tell the doctor." Some voice whispers and the sound of steps follow. "Dear, can you hear me?"
I can't answer, something is blocking my mouth. Something is choking me! I shot my eyes open and try to move around, in a panic.
"No! No! That tube helps you breathe. I will get it out in a second. You've been in a serious accident. You are in a hospital." A nurse says as she tries to keep me still.
Oh, yes... The accident.
I stand still and she smiles at me. A doctor appears too and takes the tube out. I try not to choke as any movement makes my entire body burn in pain.
"The woman...?" I ask.
I have no idea why I care so much about her. She is a stranger after all and I didn't even know the extent of my own injuries now. But something screams at me from the inside that my life is somehow connected to hers.
I look at the nurse and then at the doctor. The gloomy expression on their faces is enough, but I want to hear it. Or else I won't believe... that everything was in vain.
"I am so sorry, we did everything we could, but... she was full of bullets. It's unbelievable she survived that long." They look at each other with a strange expression when the doctor mentions her injuries.
"And the man?" I ask.
"He ran away. The police are looking for him. It would help if you could answer some questions. When you feel up to it, of course." The nurse says, and I nod.
"I can do it now."
"Dear, you should rest a bi..."
"The faster I do it, the faster they can catch him. He can't do that to anyone else." I say and they get out so the police can come in.
They seem nice enough and I hope they can tell me more about who that woman is.
"Miss Evans, I am Dan and he is Luca. We are from the Cherif department and we would like you to answer some questions. If you feel too tired at any point, we can stop and try again later. Is that alright?" One of them says as he opens his notebook and gives me a polite smile. I nod.
"I will start by asking what you were doing there that night." He says and I sigh. He notices and jumps to warn me. "If it's something you wouldn't want us to know, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you..."
"No no! Nothing like that. It was a shitty story, but nothing new under the sun. I found my boyfriend cheating when I came home from work that evening. Since I resigned to move with him to L. A., they let me go earlier and he didn't expect me. I finished my lease too, since, you know... moving with him for his job." I try to put that horrible night in as few words as possible. I don't want to think about that pile of s**t right now.
The cops look at each other a bit awkward, but Dan clears his voice and professionally moves over this part of the conversation. Thanks, Dan.
"So you were just driving around?" He asks.
"I didn't even know there's a road there. I never noticed that right turn to the forest. But then I just woke up driving there. I don't know why. Maybe I wanted some silence. I always hated how noisy the city is." I answer.
"Yeah, me too. But it's quite scary to drive around in such an area at night."
"I didn't think about that. I wasn't thinking much." I answer, not wanting to sound insane by telling them something was drawing me in that direction.
"That is understandable. So you were driving. No other car around?"
"No."
"Not even parked?" He asks again, frowning at his notes.
"No from what I can remember." I sake my head.
"That's ok. Tell us what you can remember. You were driving." Dan continues and I try to remember the events step by step.
"I saw something moving in the dark. I thought it was an animal. I could swear it was running on four feet. So I slowed down, thinking it could run in front of the car. I was thinking that I need my car... I will live in it until I found another place."
"No family, no friends?" Dan asks.
"No. I never knew my parents and my boy... my ex made me cut ties with all my friends through the years. He was all I had." I say, embarrassed, now that I listen to the red flags.
Another awkward look in between the. Damn! I should focus on the accident, not on my shitty life.
"So! The shadow!" I hurry to move on. "I saw it coming and I slowed down, but then it fell to the ground. It... she tripped and then... when she got up, I realized it was a human."
"And you weren't scared."
"I don't think I had the time to." I say hiding the fact that no, I wasn't scared, I knew that that shadow was someone I need to meet. "I noticed she was limping and the silhouette. I realized it was a woman and she has trouble walking. I stopped the car. I wasn't planning to get out, I just wanted to call 911."
"Why didn't you right away?"
"I saw a man behind her. I saw he was holding a gun, he was preparing to shoot her. I just panicked, I didn't have time to call." I answer.
"So what did you do when you saw him about to shoot the woman?" Dan puts his hand on my shoulder encouraging.
"I pressed the acceleration and I went off-road. I didn't plan to hit him. I just wanted to somehow put the car in the middle, drag the woman in and take off. I know it sounds dumb."
"No, no. People come out with all kinds of ideas in hard situations. You wanted to save someone. That is admirable." Dan reassures me and I nod.
"I... I lost control of the car. Maybe I hit something, maybe it was just slippery, but before I knew it, it felt like I was flying. I rolled over. It felt like an eternity. When it finally stopped, I crawled out of the car. I couldn't feel my legs. I saw the woman lying there, right next to me. Did I... Did I hit her too?" I ask with a lump in my throat.
"No. She died from the bullets. The only blood on the car was a man's blood. You hit him, but probably not that hard since he got up and ran away. We found steps limping away from the place." Dad says and I sigh in relief.
They let me take a few breaths before asking me to continue.
"I turned after my phone. I called 911. I just told them where I was. And that two people need help. I am not sure what happened after. I can't remember anything else."
"Anything about the man? Any detail can help."
"I am not so sure. Before I lost control of the car, my lights fell on him. He covered his face, but I noticed a scar. He had a black hood over and I remember nothing else specific. But the scar was huge and it looked reddish like it was still recent. It was on his cheek and it went all the way to his ear." I say, forcing myself to remember anything else. But nothing. I shake my head frustrated.
"That is very helpful. Thank you." Dan says with a smile and takes a card out of his wallet. "Call me in case you remember anything else."
And with that, they walk out the door.
I sigh. The nurse left my belongings on the small table next to me. I take my phone and open the contacts list. Not much in here. I have no one to call to tell them I am in the hospital.
A lonely tear drops on the screen. I didn't realize I was crying.
The nurse comes back.
"Are you ok? Does something hurts?" She asks, hurrying to take my hand and look at the machines that I'm connected to.
"Ah... no. I just... Can I see her?" I ask, no idea why. I just need to be next to her.
"I don't think...."
"Please... For a moment." I plead and after looking at me for a second she nods.
She helps me get out of bed and supports me while we slowly walk to the morgue. Every step is painful as I feel my legs shatter under me. The nurse tells me I hurt my spine. Nothing serious, but it will be hard to move for a while.
But am alive... my sister is not.
My sister? I don't have a sister... why did that come to my mind? I must be still a bit confused.
In the morgue, there is no one around. The nurse takes me to one of the metallic beds and uncovers the body.
I gasp when I see her face. They washed away the blood and the dirt. Her skin is white and smooth. She has long, black hair and... a birthmark on her forehead... My parents died when I was fourteen in a car crash. But I remember them like I saw their faces yesterday. Smiling, and making pancakes in the kitchen. So I am sure that my mom had the exact same birthmark on her forehead.
A sound wakes me up from my thoughts.
Someone is coming. I look at the nurse. She looks whiter than the body.
"Ah, I shouldn't have brought you here..." She says just before the door opens.
A tall man comes in. He looks around my age, but the broad shoulders and the suit he's wearing make him look a bit more mature. I know the situation is not ok to think this, but damn, he is fire. My eyes fall on his lips first; full and pinkish, I can almost taste the sweetness on them. A straight nose, defined cheeks, and the eyes... He has green eyes, that seem to hide both hell and heaven behind them, black hair that looks a bit messy.
I stared at him so hard I didn't realize he was fixing me too, until the nurse cleared her voice.
"Sir, I am so sorry. Miss Evans is the one that tried to save your fiance and she wanted to come to see her." The nurse says, with a bit of fear in her voice. My guess is that he's an important man.
And this was his fiance... I was drooling at a dead woman's fiance. Shame on me!
"You can leave." He says to the nurse and his hoarse voice hits me like a train. My knees get weak and I almost fall, but he jumps to catch me.
His touch is electric. I never felt something like this before. With a hand on my back and with one holding my hand, he freezes too, staring into my eyes.
"I am so sorry, sir. We will leave right now." The nurse says and we both look away.
"You leave." He answers.
"But..." The nurse tries to protest, but he throws her a warning look and she hurries to leave without another word.
He says nothing to me, just continues to stare.
"I am Laura..." I try to fill the silence and he nods, not looking away.
"Chris."
"I am sorry I came here. I just... I felt like I had to see her. I wish I could have done something." I mumble and he stops me.
"The bullets were silver, there was nothing you could do. I am the one who should have protected her..." He looks at the body.
"Silver...?" I ask confused.
"Not important now. The one that did this will pay." He says and puts one hand on my cheek, softly brushing my skin with his thumb. The touch gives me comfort and I lean in. I don't realize I got so close to him until my forehead touches his chest and his arms are wrapped around me. He buried his face in my hair and his lips touch the soft skin of my neck. I feel his warm breath and I shiver.
God, this is so wrong... but it feels so good I can't stop. His presence is magnetic.
But fortunately, or not, someone storms into the room.
"Alpha! We found a track!" Someone screams and I jump two feet away.
I look at the man. He is just as tall as Chris, but his presence is a bit less imposing. He looks at me weirdly and I blush from head to toe. What is he thinking? I am a stranger that hugs his friend or boss, idk, right next to his fiance's dead body.
"Let's go!" Chris shouts and the man nods, forcing himself to look away from me. "Go to your room!" He tells me as he rushes out the door.
"Send someone to watch her!" Is the last thing hear before they disappear, leaving me alone with the body.
A wave of overwhelming shame comes over me when I look at her.
"I am sorry..." I say to the body.
I am sorry I couldn't save her. I am sorry I was attracted to her fiance. I am sorry we couldn't meet when she was alive.
I fall on my knees, holding her cold hand and crying.
I have no idea how much time passed before someone came in.
"Hei! It's ok, it's ok. Shh." A woman's voice starts comforting me while she wraps her arms around me and gently strokes my hair.
She lifts me up and we slowly return to another room.
"This is not my room..." I say looking around. It looks like a VIP hospital room from the movies.
"Mr. Thorn asked to move you here until he returns. I am to stay with you. My name is Cami." The woman answers and I feel too exhausted to ask more questions.
She helps me get in bed and I immediately fall asleep. But it's not darkness that surrounds me... I look around, knowing I am asleep, but still seeing light.
"Hello?" A voice from behind me asks. I turn around and see the woman...
"You..."
"Yes." She answers with a bright smile. "My name is Erika. You must be Laura."
"How do you...? Why are you here? Are you mad at me?" I bomb her with questions and she laughs.
"The Moon Goddess felt sorry that we never had the chance to meet. She allowed me to say hi before going to her." She answers and I look at her confused.
"Moon Goddess?"
"The goddess of werewolves." She answers and I look even more confused. "Come. let's sit down. We have a lot to talk."
I didn't notice when the surrounding changed. It looks like we are in a garden, with a wooden bench. She takes my hand and we both sit down.
"Let's start with the beginning. We are sisters. Twins, although we don't look the same." She says and I nod. I somehow already knew that. "Our father was a werewolf, as I was. He was the Alpha of a small pack. He met a human and he fell in love. She was her mate. Our mom. You look exactly like him. So uncanny."
"You look like mom..." I say and she smiles. "Then what happened? Why were we raised apart? Who was the man that raised me?"
"The pack was small and was always under attack from hunters."
"Like the one that killed you..." I realize.
"Yeah... My father was scared. He could protect himself, but my mom was human. When we were born, he got even more scared. When twins are born from werewolves and humans together, the oldest gets the blessing and the youngest doesn't." She says.
"I was the youngest... You are a werewolf, like our father and I am a human, like mom."
"That meant two humans in his pack. Two of his most precious that couldn't protect themselves. The fear ate him. And one day, he did something terrible... He broke the mate bond with mom and asked the elder from our pack to erase her memory of him. He gave you to her and left her to rebuild her life as a human. To be happy and safe. Both of you." She continues, her voice breaking.
"And you..."
"I stayed with him. I was his heir. The future Luna. He told me the truth when I was ten. We would come once a month to see you and mom from afar. That until the accident... Then we lost track of you. Losing his mate... it was too much for him. He died shortly after. After his death... I tried to find you, but..."
"But I found you... too late." I say looking down. "Why were you there?"
"I found out my mate was a really powerful Alpha. So our packs were to unite. The hunters got wind of it and tried to attack before we got too strong. It was my duty to protect my people. The hunters were after me, so I run away to let my warriors retreat." She answers, with pride in her voice.
I stare at her in silence, trying to process all. Werewolves... hunters... a sister... my father.
"You already met my mate... Chris?" She says with a taunting smile, trying to get me out of the mess in my head. I blush.
"I am so sorry... I..." I stutter and she laughs.
"We met a week ago. It's not like it was something in between us, except for the mate bond." She answers amused.
"But... you... fiance."
"Yes, mates are to be married. This is how it works. They are destined for each other, but that doesn't mean instant love..." She answers and she looks at the ground. Her eyes darken.
"You didn't get to love him..."
"No. I was attracted to him, but I... I loved someone else. My Beta, Lucas... you will meet him probably." Her eyes light up again and she turns to me, grabbing my hand. "Tell him... tell him that. That I loved him and that it's my fault for running away like that, not his. He did what he had to do. Protect the pack. Tell him not to blame himself!"
The pain in her eyes breaks my heart.
"I will..." I promise and she calms down.
"Maybe it's for the best like this. I had no idea what to do. Reject my mate and the safety that he could bring to my people...or break my own heart and give up on Lucas..."
I don't know what to say so I just hug her tight. Her tense body softens in my arms and she hugs me back.
"I always Imagined we played together when I was little." She says.
"When I was younger, I had an imaginary friend, a twin sister that I played with." I answer, with my voice drowned in tears. I always felt like a small part of me was missing. And now I hold it in my arms, but I have to let her go again...
We stay like that, hugging and crying for a while.
"We have to go back..." She says and I see the light around us getting a little brighter,
"I wish we..." I try to say.
"I know... I know."
The light gets even brighter, almost blinding me.
"I love you!" She says.
"I love you too." I answer and we share one last hug.
"Oh," She adds just before I wake up. "Twins have the same mate. Don't fight against it. Be happy!"
And with that, I am back in my hospital room. The sun is bright and it falls on my face. I growl, covering my eyes.
I am grateful when someone closes the curtain. But I blush from head to toe when I see who.
Chris... Erika's last words come to my mind Twins have the same mate. Don't fight against it. Be happy!
"Are you ok? You slept for a long time." He asks and comes closer.
"Did you catch him? You ran out after the hunter, didn't you?" I blurt out. First things first, I don't want my newly discovered and already lost sister's killer roaming around.
"Yes. He and his band got what they deserved." He answers, the tone making me realize that despite his sweet tone around me, he is not someone to be messed with. "But forget about his pathetic, short existence. How are you? No one could wake you up."
"I saw Erika." I say and he looks shocked.
"Oh..."
"We talked. She said that the Moon Goddess allowed her to come and say goodbye." I explain and he nods.
"I was wondering how to explain that to you." He answers and sits on the bed next to me, holding my hand. "There was a lot to take in for someone raised as a human..."
He is worried about all the werewolves exist, hunters, Moon Goddess. That is truly amazing and it will take a while to understand, but something else is bugging me right now.
"You were mates..." I test the waters. Just because she didn't love him doesn't mean that he didn't.
"Yes. My pack needs a Luna. I went to visit every pack. When I found Erika I was relieved. Until I realized she loved someone else." He answers and looks at me. "I needed a Luna, she needed her pack to be safe. But I had no plan to make her miserable. I was going to propose that she can continue to see her boyfriend, but I didn't get to..."
"Lucas... Her Beta."
"She mentioned him?" He asks, not looking too bothered.
"She left him a message." I answer and wait for him to react in some way. Bt his face remains unmoved.
"I will guess she didn't mention me."
"She did. Kind of..." I answer and blush. He raises his eyebrow waiting for me to continue. "She said that twins... umm..."
"Share a mate." He answers with a cheeky smile and I punch him in the arm. It's so weird. I never felt a connection like this with someone. It comes so easy. Everything just feels right. And I want to feel anxious. I mean, I've known this man for five minutes and the things I found out too... it's insane. But I fully believe everything. Like I already knew it, but I wasn't aware. No second-guessing. No overthinking. Acceptance.
"How does that work?" I ask.
"I am not sure. It's rare. Twins are rare. But from what I heard, their mate is always more connected to one of them and ends up rejecting the other."
"That sounds cruel."
"Not that much. The other twin doesn't feel the connection that strong either. Like in Erika's case. We were not meant to be and we both somehow knew it. But we forced it because of circumstances. If you were both there, me and Erika would have rejected each other and she would have probably met her second chance mate." He explains and it makes sense.
A knock on the door interrupts us. And before either of us get the chance to answer, Andrew opens the door. My ex...
He has some flowers and a big smile.
"Honey, the nurses said you were here. I came as soon as I heard." He says, looking at Chris up and down. "Sir, you must be the other girl's fiance. I am so sorry for your loss."
What on earth is he doing here? I doubt he came for me. He didn't bother to text a short apology after I found him in bed with another woman: Luara, I'm sorry I cheated. But he came here all worried?
"My girlfriend suffered terribly trying to save her. I am sure she is devastated that she couldn't. Her sacrifice was in vain..." He continues while me and Chris just stare at him. "The car was destroyed, my girlfriend was terribly injured, she will probably not be able to work for weeks. I will have to stay home too to take care of her... The mental trauma..."
Is he for real? Did he come to ask for money from Chris?
"Please leave..." I say, too exhausted to deal with this asshole. Can't believe I loved him.
"Honey, the nurses told me you suffered a head trauma. Probably..."
"You cheated before the head trauma, Andrew. f**k off!" I say, pissed.
"Honey!" He tries to say, coming closer. Chris grabs his hand so hard that Andrew lets out a small cry.
"She told you to f**k off. I recommend you listen." Chris says, with a low, threatening voice that sends cold shivers down my spine. And by the look on Andrew's face, he feels it too.
"I... I wi... will come back later." He stutters, rushing to take his little flowers off the floor.
"Don't." Chris says, sitting back on the bed, not throwing Andrew a second look.
After he leaves, he looks at me with a questioning look.
"We were friends when my parents died. He supported me and we ended up dating. He did a lot for me as a friend then so I thought I owed him a lot when we got together. He was a nice person, but people change and I left him to treat me like s**t. He got used to it. After all, where else could I go...?" I say, tears forming in the corner of my eyes.
Chris puts his hand on my cheek and wipes up a solitary tear that escaped.
"Now you can come to me. Please come to me!" His voice is soft, like a whisper. No, more like a prayer. His eyes gaze into mine and I see the love, the promises of happiness and bliss that hide behind them. I see my future.
The overwhelming feelings take over me and I start to cry out loud.
Chris comes closer and hugs me as tight as he can.
#A year later#
"Luna! Good morning." Lucas says with a bright smile as I am walking towards the pack's doctor's office.
"Good morning Lucas." I say and can't help but notice the amazing change on his face. After I was discharged from the hospital, Chris took me to Erika's pack. My pack. As the only daughter of the late Alpha, I became an Alpha too. There I met Lucas and I found him broken, like a shadow of a man. Apparently, when Erika died, he realized she was his mate. He would have been her second chance mate. That broke him and I thought that he will never move past that pain. Until two weeks ago, when he found his second cache mate. The i***t wanted to reject her just to pay respect to Erika's memory, but apparently, my sister visited his dreams and gave him a good scolding. Judging by his face, it worked.
"Where are you going?" He asks. "You look lost again."
I took my pack and moved to Chris' territory to be safe, but it took a while so I am still new to this place. Good thing that everyone is so nice.
"A... the doctor's office."
His smile disappears.
"Are you ok?" He asks, worried.
"Yeah, just bit dizzy lately. I thought it would be better to check." I answer with a reassuring smile that he doesn't seem to buy. But he says nothing more and he guides me to the office. He refuses to leave my side though until the doctor tells him to wait outside.
Midway through, Chris, that was probably announced by Lucas bursts into the room.
"Are you ok?" He asks, dripping in sweat. He was on a border patrol, so he probably run here full speed.
I don't get to answer, though, as the doctor does it for me.
"Luna is perfectly fine, Alpha. The dizziness is caused by the pregnancy. It's normal."
"Pregn... I'm pregnant?" I ask, wrapping my arms around the belly.
"Yes, Luna. Six weeks." The doctor answers.
I look at Chris, with tears in my eyes. He slowly walks over and falls on his knees in front of me. He hugs my legs and gently presses his lips on my belly.
Soft cries come from the big bad Alpha as he tells me how much he loves me, how much will love this baby and how happy he is.
I kneel next to him and hug I'm tight, crying like a baby too. I feel like happiness could bust my heart. It takes us forever to calm down, and Chris gently lifts me up like I'm made of porcelain. I giggle. So this is how it's going to be... Can't complain.
"Now you have to think about names." The doctor says looking at us with a soft smile.
We both answer at the same time.
"Erika or Erik."
