Prologue
The pain started between her eyes like she had been reading under dim light all day. Aren's mother had asked her to help Aaron put his games away before sending them both to brush their teeth. It was a routine they had developed since Aaron started getting sick. Someone always has to be watching him. Even at school, there is always an adult around the two of them.
Aren handed Aaron his blue Captain America toothbrush. He held it up so she can smear toothpaste on it. She doesn't mind taking care of her brother. He's not annoying in any way. Just a little talkative at dinner but she enjoys the way he speaks. It's soothing to her, keeps her calm.
The two of them started brushing their teeth when the pain in her head got a little stronger. Aren tightened her eyes while rubbing the spot between her eyebrows. It isn't uncommon for her to get a slight headache. She spent a lot of time reading and writing or playing video games with Aaron.
She doesn't want to tell her dad right now. He's still very upset with her about sneaking into the car a couple of weeks ago. She doesn't understand why he would allow those two kids to stay with those people. Why they can't just live here with them and become a part of their pack? Isn't that what Alphas are supposed to do? Aren't they supposed to help those who can't defend themselves?
"You okay?" Aaron asked when she pressed her fingers to her head again.
"Yeah, don't worry about me. Let's go get your medicine so we can go to bed," she answered.
Aaron nodded and followed her into the kitchen where their mom had left his medication on the table with two glasses of water. Aren counted the six pills and made sure they were the right colored ones before she gave them to him. He took them putting them all in his mouth at once. The two of them took their water. Aaron was the first to finish while Aren couldn't stand to drink the water too fast. It made the pain intensify.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Aaron asked taking the glass from her.
"Yeah," she lied as the two of them walked over to where their rooms are.
She watched as her brother climbed into bed before she turned the lights off and shut the door. This headache is stronger than any of the other headaches she's ever had before. As she turned the lights off and closed the door to her room she contemplated on telling her dad. When she couldn' take it anymore she climbed out of bed and opened the door.
"She's different now. Ever since she shifted. It's like her mind skipped straight to the dominance. She can't control her wolf yet. I don't know what to do or how this is going to affect her in the long run,"
"Alpha, has it spoken to her? The wolf I mean. Have the two of them established a bond?"
"I don't know but it has been showing her things. It opens the link it created to..."
"She's in the hallway," her mom said stopping them.
"Aren?" he called out to her. She sighed stepping into the entrance of the living room. "Did you need something sweetheart?"
"No, I just got up for some water," she lied. she went into the kitchen and took a water bottle out of the fridge before walking back to her room.
I can't believe dad is that worried about me. She thought.
He's supposed to be. He's your father. it said.
Elise had been the voice in her head since she shifted. It was like having another person in her head. She didn't really understand why it was there all she knows is that it's her wolf and she forbade Aren from telling anyone that they spoke to one another. Elise is afraid that the adults might do something to the two that would keep the two of them from communicating.
Why does my head hurt so much? she asked Elise.
It's not coming from you. It's coming from him. Just go to bed. It will go away with some rest.
Aren climbed back into bed thinking about what her dad said. How will this affect her? Why would it even affect her if Elise would have eventually come anyway? She can't be the only wolf in history that has gotten her wolf five years in advance.
Aren lied back shutting her eyes welcoming the slight relief. She took a deep breath and turned away from the door not want to think about what her parents were talking about on the other side of it. She doesn't know when but she dozed off.
It was late when her eyes shot open and she sat up unable to catch a proper breath. The slight pain had turned into a searing ache. It feels like someone had hit her on the face with a textbook. She groaned trying to make it stop.
Goosebumps broke out all over her skin, her vision began to blur, and all of a sudden there was a sharp pain on the back of her head like someone had slammed her on the concrete as hard as they could.
"Daddy," she cried out. The door to her room was pushed open and her parents rushed in looking around as if they were looking for an intruder.
"Aren, what's wrong?"
"Daddy, make it stop. It hurts," she cried out.
Her dad went over to her removing her hands from her head. There's blood on the hand she was holding the back of her head with.
"Aren, what did you do?"
"Nothing," she cried out. "It's him. It's the boy,"
"s**t," her dad panicked. "Aren, look at me, baby. I need you to stay calm down,"
Aren looked up at her father but she couldn't hear him anymore. All she can see is the urgency in his features and the way his mouth moved when he spoke to her. A ringing started in Aren's ears. Her hands came up covering them. Her dad grabbed her arms trying to sooth the wolf in her trying to rip its way out of his daughter.
There was a loud heart-wrenching howl for help in the distance.
It all happened in a blur. One second Aren was in a lot of pain and the next she was free and running through the trees in the direction the howl had come from. She wasn't going to stop this time. No one was going to stop her from helping him. Whoever the boy is she needs to help him. He belongs to her now and he will not be hurt again, even if her dad did get very upset with her.
One moment, she was running and the next she was sitting in the pantry back in her house covering her ears. The sounds of wolves fighting outside echo loudly outside. Elise kept whispering for her to stay calm and quiet. Eventually, the sounds ended.
Stay. Elise demanded.
Aren shut her eyes wondering when her dad was going to come back and let her out. She started falling asleep when a burning started in her chest. Aren pushed the doors open crawling along the floor wanting the hot to stop.
"Daddy," she cried out as the hot turned into a searing heat.
The heat ran wild in her veins as she cried out unable to make a single move. When she was finally able to open her eyes everything was red. Something inside of her took control as the burning subsided. She took in deep breaths. The smell of blood was everywhere. It covered her arms and bare legs. When had she put clothes on?
Get up. Elise demanded and she complied without hesitation. We have to go. We have to find your brother.
There are bodies all over the place. For some reason, she had expected that. She walked around until she stopped in front of the body that will haunt her for the rest of her life. The body of her mutilated mother. Not too far is her dad. Tears came easily then. She walked over to him to see that he was still breathing. Barely, but still alive.
"Live," he said when their eyes met. "Go,"
"There's no one here," someone shouted from inside the house.
"I love you," she said whispering into his ear before she ran towards the trees.
We will be fine. I promise. Elise said.
