Chapter 1

Vega “If you wish to one day, take over the council. You will need a mate.” Adner said in his deep voice. I clenched my teeth together. How could my father not see that there was no need for me to take a mate? I was stronger without those emotional ties. I’d seen what it had done to my mother, being tied to Adner. My father was a great man, a cruel leader. I didn’t want that for myself. “Marcus’ flock is flourishing, he would make a good mate for you.” My father said, casting a glance my way as I tried to school my features. Looking over to Izar, he gave me a slight nod. I could always trust him, he had been my second for as long as I could remember and if he weren’t gay, he would have made a good mate. Sadly, there are some things you can’t fake. Not even for power’s sake. Glancing over at Nash, I rolled my eyes, pushing my blonde curls over my shoulder. His eyes glowed yellow at the mention of Marcus. He’d never gotten over not killing his previous plaything. “I could talk with Marcus, there is the problem of his mate.” I said, looking up at my father. Nash let out a growl, I sent a withering look his way. “I’ll leave it to you to handle that.” Well f**k, that was my father’s way of telling me I would go no further as long as I didn’t have a mate. Nodding my head, I turned away from him. He’d made his choice on who he thought would be the best mate for me. There was no doubt in my mind that if I didn’t convince Marcus to mate with me that my father wouldn’t allow me to take charge of the council when he passed. There was no male heir after my brother had left the flock. I had an idea of who he would choose if I didn’t have a mate, and that person was unacceptable to me. I’d have my seat on the council. One way or another.
