Chapter Two

1059 Words
CARA I walked down the hallway of my apartment, heading to the kitchen. My mission was to have some delicious banana pancakes and hot chocolate, before going to work. I deserved it, after a long weekend of nonstop writing as I had a deadline to meet. I had missed work on Friday since I had been sent on an errand by my boss. Being a writer had to be one of the most difficult things to do. I loved my job, but it did take a toll on me sometimes. Especially when my brain had to work like a machine. My phone rang as I was mixing the dry ingredients for my pancake batter. I picked it up, then placed the phone in between my head and my shoulder as I prepared my breakfast. It was almost 6:30 in the morning and I needed to eat and rush to work. It was my sister, Elena. As soon as I heard the sobs, I already knew what she wanted to say. “Cade…he cheated on me again, Cara.” She sobbed and went ahead to tell me how she came back home to find her boyfriend in the arms of not just one, but two women. The nerve of that man! I wasn’t having it, so I went straight to the point. “Elena, I have told you countless time to let that man go. He’s not good for you.” I scolded my sister. I was tired of her and her relationship issues, especially when I had exhausted all the advice and sympathy left in me for her. Cade was an asshole who cheated at every free minute he had to himself. And he was a f*****g freeloader, draining her of all her money! “But Cara….” She tried to say, but was interrupted by a noise in the background. It sounded like something had fallen…dishes probably. “Elena, just listen to me and break up with that guy. And this time let it be for real. He brought two women to your house! It means he doesn’t even have an atom of respect for you!” I tried hard not to raise my voice at her, but I couldn’t help it. I inhaled and exhaled, trying to calm myself down before I said anything else. “Listen, I know you have never taken a break from work before, and you probably have all that leave piled up for you. How about you just take a short break? Two to four weeks. Come back home and clear your head. I’m sure it will do you good.” I shrugged, stirring the pancake batter I had in my hands. “At least it will give you enough time to think and reflect about your relationship.” I started to slice the bananas as I waited for her to speak. “Fine. I’ll think about it. A holiday actually sounds great.” Another noise in the background. “I have to go now, I’ll call and let you know my final decision.” She said. “I love you, sis. Take care.” I smiled, as of she could even see me. “I love you too. And thank you for always taking our time to listen to me.” “You are welcome.” I replied and hung up the phone. But not before I heard Cade yell at my sister. The only reason I didn’t stop whatever I was doing to intervene in the fight I knew was going to happen was that, no matter bad their arguments got, Cade could never go physical on her. He couldn’t even raise a finger. Elena was a marine. I reached my office at exactly 7:50am, and wasted no time walking straight to my bosses office to submit all I had prepared. I wasn’t nervous at all as I strode past coworkers and entered the elevator, pressing the button that would take me to the last floor. Where my boss’s office was. Gabriel Richardson, who so happened to be my boss, was a force to be reckoned with. He had thought me all I knew today about the media. Well not directly teachings…but I had learned from countless rejected articles and humiliation from being the worst in the company. It had taken me three years of hard work to become the best I was today in the whole of Daily Lines. The biggest news outlet in the whole country. Which was why I strode confidently towards the office of my boss. In my suitcase, I had the biggest article ever about the one and only Adrian Nikalauo. The country’s hottest and most eligible bachelor. Oh, and not only that, he was the richest on Forbes list of under thirty self made billionaires. Followed by his brothers, Leander Nikalauo, and Theo Nikalauo, respectively. Three of them, were to die for, and they just happened to be Greek! As drool worthy as Adrian was, I couldn’t skip the gossip about him getting some model pregnant. And I had taken out my time to speak to Mila who had given me every juicy detail about it all. In fact, my whole weekend was spent digging out all the dirt I could find about Adrian. Although, there wasn’t so much, his history with women was enough to get the whole country to talk about him for a very long time. Which was good for our company. I smiled and soothed down my skirt, preparing to enter the office when the door burst open, revealing the very satisfactory and smiling face of non other than.. Mila Greyson! She didn’t even spare me a glance as she tucked something into her purse and walked away, leaving me standing with my mouth hanging open. What the hell was going on? Why had Mila been in my bosses office? Dread filled me as I stared at the suitcase on my hand with fear. “Cara I can see you on the screen standing in front of my office. Get yourself in here and show me the damn article. I don’t have all day.” He called out from the slightly open door. Shit! I had already called him on Sunday afternoon to tell him about the article I was working on. Oh dear! What was I going to do?
