CARA
By the time my boss came back to the office, I was still sweating and completely clueless as to what to tell him, so I opted for the truth. I rose up to my feet, thinking about how best to say what I wanted to say.
But before I could speak, his appearance stopped me. He looked flushed, with his hair in disarray, and his lips were swollen!
Was he having a thing with Mila? Because I had seen him rush out after her, from the CCTV camera, but I hadn’t been able to see them when they had gone outside. Mr Richardson’s camera didn’t go past the inside of the building. I always felt like he just wanted to know if everyone was going about their jobs and not messing around. The security of the the place was left to the offices downstairs.
“Mr Richardso…” I started, but was cut short by a smiling Gabriel. I never called him Gabriel to his face though.
“Sit down, Cara.” He told me, and settled back into his seat. I did as he asked.
“Sir, I’m so sorry, but it seems I have the same article with the one you already have published.” I said with a rush, looking down at my hands, instead of his face.
He laughed a bit, making me frown in confusion. “I already knew that, Cara. You may as well stop looking like I’m about to eat you up.” At his words and the coolness of his tone, I finally looked up to see him scrolling through his phone.
I swallowed. “So…you are not mad at me?” I asked, crossing my fingers in nervousness. Usually, he was really hot tempered and erratic when we couldn’t deliver, and seeing him this way was making me more nervous than I would normally be if he was bellowing out orders at me.
He shook his head and set the phone down. “No Cara. I am not.” I was about to celebrate when he said the next words. “I am not angry because I’m in a very good mood today, and I already have great results from the article that was sent out. But that doesn’t mean you don’t owe me.”
Owe him?
His suddenly looked serious. “Now, our company’s anniversary is only four weeks away, and to make it a ground breaking celebration, I would like us to release a very big and heavy article that would shake the whole country, and turn all the attention to us. I want something completely scandalous, and newsworthy.” He said, and I sat upright in my seat.
My mind was already working like a clock, trying to look for areas from where I could come up with what he was asking. Gabriel didn’t even let me speak or ask any question before he threw the next words that almost had me hyperventilating.
“And I must warn you, Cara Ellison. Someone beat you to the last article, and I can’t have the two of you here at the same time. So whatever you are going to bring to the table in exactly twenty eight days, will determine if you are going to stay in this company. It’s either you get promoted, or get laid off. Choose your poison.”
What in the_
“But…Sir…” I stuttered, but he hushed me, rising up to his feet as he gathered he looked at his wrist watch and gathered his things from the table in a move to leave.
“Ellison, I would suggest you take the next three weeks off, take it as a vacation or whatever you want to call it. And come back with what I asked.” And then, just like that, he left the office.
I sat there with my mouth open in shock at what I had just heard.
Had my boss sudden switched up on me just because of a damn article? And what was this about me going on a three weeks long leave? Was he indirectly firing me from the job?
My lips trembled as I tried to make sense of what had just happened. I was being given a condition for keeping my job.
And I didn’t have even a single idea on what to write in an article to keep the damn job.
How had a day that started so well, go awry in a matter of hours?
With tears in my eyes, I quickly rushed back to my office where I sobbed out all of my frustrations.
When I was done crying, I walked into the small bathroom in my office and washed my hands and face. I looked into the mirror with determination.
I was going to do as he asked, but before then, I was going to hand in my resume somewhere. This wasn’t the time to lose my job. I knew Gabriel Richardson, and I knew he had a very unhealthy hunger for scandals and articles that would keep the money running in his organization. I could resign, but working with Daily lines was my biggest shot at reaching my dreams.
A three week leave with a promise of a promotion, that still came with condition was really suspicious for me.
I was going to give it a shot. The opportunity of a promotion wasn’t something I could miss. Condition or not.
Besides, I knew the only person whose scandals gave Gabriel Richardson, complete and utter satisfaction.
Adrian Nikalauo.
The very handsome and sexy Greek devil.
With enough scandals with women to fill an encyclopedia.
The problem was, what was I going to write that was going to be enough to satisfy my boss?
I needed to know this man, get close to him, and get as much information as I could about him. Something that was very well beyond any scandal that has ever been known. Something that could not just be gotten from the surface.
Gabriel hated this man so much, fir reasons best known to him, and from the news and rumors, the feeling was mutual from the other end. But it wasn’t my business.
Gabriel lived for news about him, and that was what I was going to give him.
With my mind set, I cleared my table and packed my stuff, heading out of the building. I may as well use the three weeks to the fullest. And I was going to call it a vacation.
As I walked out with my box in my hand, some of the employees stared openly at me, with confusion in their faces.
Laura, my rival, stepped in front of me, stopping me from going through the door. She was the one who had published that article before I could. “Enjoy your vacation, Ellison. I’ll be sure to take care of things here while you are gone.” She said, and I just shook my head and walked around and past her without saying a word.
I didn’t have time for stupid people.
In fact, I needed a drink.
ADRIAN
I didn’t get to my the office. I was in so much bad mood I knew it was going to affect the rest of my day, so I called Theo and asked him to take over.
I packed my car in front of the bar and just sat inside, suddenly not feeling like entering anymore. So many things were happening to me all at once, and it was beginning to get to me. I had lost two of my biggest investors. The woman I had been going out with had sold me out to the media, and there was my mother, threatening me with a wife.
Of all the things in this earth.
A wife!
Who did that in this day and age?
I must have stayed in the car for a over fifteen minutes because someone tapped on the window, and when I looked, it was the security guy from the club. Terrence.
“Hey, man.” I said as soon as I wound down the glass, giving him a small smile.
“Is everything alright? You’ve been here for quite a while.” He said.
I nodded. “It’s alright. Wanted to go inside, but I realized I have some stuff to do back in the office.” I told him, deciding not to go in again. I needed to lay my head and rest. I could even feel a small headache coming on.
Terrence nodded and straightened to his full height. “Okay then. Guess I’ll see you around.” He said, waving at me and walking back to his post.
I wanted back, starting the ignition of the car, and preparing to reverse the car and get on the road.
I could have sworn that I didn’t see anyone when I looked back. I could have sworn with my entire life. But that wasn’t the story when I head a loud bang from behind, and a woman’s screams.
My heart leaped to my stomach as I stepped on the brakes and rushed out of the vehicle to go see what had happened. I could hear Terrence shout as he made his way towards the car.
My hands immediately went to my mouth as I saw the body of a woman, lying just behind the car. And from the look of things, she was unconscious. A thick mass of brown hair covered her face, obstructing my view of her.
I quickly pulled at my tie and got to my knees. “Oh God, no…no…” I whispered, and placed a hand in her neck to check for a pulse. Whoever she was, I hoped she was not dead.
I sighed in relief as I felt a very strong pulse.
“Help me get her into the car, Terrence.” I said to Terrence and waited till he opened the door before gathering her into my arms and taking her to the car.
I knew it wasn’t the time for such thoughts to enter my head, but she felt so warm and soft in my arms and I had to bite my lower lips to get the distracting thought out of my head.
But why did she smell like cherries!
