I didn’t want to say goodbye. I wanted more time with both of them. Therefore, I hated hugging them, but time was up.
“Come see me again soon,” I whispered in Maddy’s ear.
She nodded against me, and as she leaned back, I saw tears glistening in her eyes. I knew exactly how she felt. I wanted her to stay here too, but if she were found, a horrible punishment awaited her.
She took a step back, and then Chris came around, pulling me close. He held me longer than usual, both of us desperate for one another, not wanting to let go—even knowing we’d see each other again in two days. We had agreed on it earlier in the evening.
“I don’t want to let go,” he whispered in my ear.
“Me neither, but you will come back.”
“Always,” he promised, kissing the bare skin on my shoulder.
