“Heat?”
Octavia nodded slowly. “It’s something female wolves experience after they meet their mate, and it recurs every third year,” she explained, clearly frustrated.
“And that’s a problem because...?”
Octavia pushed her empty bowl away and crossed her arms. “Because during these twenty-four hours of heat, it’s possible for wolves to get pregnant.”
“So you can’t get pregnant unless you’re in heat?” I asked, surprised.
“No.”
“Wow.” I realized I knew very little about this world as I looked at Octavia, who was rubbing her forehead in exhaustion. She didn’t seem thrilled about her upcoming heat. “You don’t want a child?”
She met my eyes and let out a deep sigh before she placed her hands on the counter again. “I don’t think I’m fit to be a mother,” she said quietly.
