“I just need to get my jacket and shoes,” I said, walking back inside but leaving the door ajar.
I slipped on a pair of black sneakers. I had wanted to wear high heels, but with my weakened state, I feared I’d shatter my ankles if I stumbled. I grabbed a leather jacket from the coat rack and headed back to Garrett, who stood patiently in the doorway.
“Let’s go,” I said, and he extended his hand.
Nervously, with my heart racing, I took his hand, and he quickly entwined his fingers with mine. I barely noticed the cold as we walked hand in hand to his car. It was a sleek, black Audi—clearly a high-end model, though my knowledge of cars was limited.
