Do you know what you are?

1889 Words
Kai The look on Starr’s face tells me she is beyond confused. Can she not feel the mate bond? I know Starr had lost her memory, but surely she knows what she is? She can feel her Lycan, can’t she? My grandmother wouldn’t give me a mate who doesn’t even know what she is, would she? “Starr, you do know what you are, don’t you?” She hesitates, then swallows hard. “I’m not sure. I feel like I might be a Lycan?” So, she is a Lycan. Interesting. I know Starr said she might be a Lycan, but I have no doubt. However, I will call upon my grandmother to confirm. “Can you feel your Lycan, Starr?” Because I’m struggling to sense her at all. What if she doesn’t have a Lycan? What if she does but can’t shift? ‘Does that even matter? Goddess, Kai! I don’t care if Starr can shift or not. You will not reject her!’ ‘Calm down, Zion. I didn’t say I would reject her, you moron!’ Starr bites her lower lip, then swallows again. “I think I feel her inside, but I can’t be sure. I feel something, but it’s too far out of my reach to grasp it. Nothing makes any sense anymore, Kai.” The use of my name from her mouth sends shivers down my spine. I take her hand in mine, and she smiles without pulling away. “I know right now you’re confused about everything. But I promise I will help you as much as possible to regain your memories.” “You would do that for me?” Starr gasps when I drag her chair away from the table and pull her in front of me. “Please don’t be scared of me,” I lay my hand on her scarred cheek. That scar is nasty, in the jagged shape of an X, as if someone carved it into her cheek with a knife. “I would never hurt you, Starr. You know about mates?” She nods. “Strangely, I remember a little. The Moon Goddess pairs fated mates, and those mated will live for each other. They will never want anyone else; the bond will keep them together. Even if they do stray, the bond will pull them back together. There’s something about rejection and punishment. I don’t remember the rules as such, but I think that’s right.” I smile. Starr hasn’t forgotten everything, which is a damn relief. “That’s right. The Moon Goddess pairs us, and nothing can tear mates apart. We mark each other,” I point to the skin between her neck and shoulder. “Right here. We sink our wolf fangs into the skin while making love, thus connecting us for life. The mark can be made without making love. But being intimate takes away the pain factor.” “It’s painful?” I nod. “It can be painful, which is why we make love. Even kissing and touching can open up the pleasure receptors. I will never hurt you, Starr, not for anything in this world.” Nothing has ever been so easy to say before. I said it because I meant it. I will never harm my mate. “But what does it mean, Kai? I’m scared, and I don’t understand what’s happening.” “It means,” I smile, stroking my thumb over her cheek. “That you’ll live here with me, become my Luna, and I will love and protect you for the rest of your life. It means that you and I belong together, and nothing will ever take you away from me.” There’s a war going on in her eyes, but Starr smiles at me. She has a right to be confused, scared, and unsure. But now that I’ve found her, I will never let her go. Thank you, Grandmother. Selene doesn’t reply, but I can sense her smiling down at me from her place on her throne in the sky. “I don’t know why I believe you, but I do.” “Do you feel the mate bond between us?” Starr shrugs slightly. “I don’t know what it is I’m feeling. I know that I like you, I’m attracted to you, and I trust you. How can that be when we don’t even know each other?” “We’ll get to know each other, Starr. All I’m asking is for a chance to prove that I can be everything you need. We can take things at your pace, Starr. I will never push you to do anything you neither want nor are ready for.” Starr tilts her head to the side with a smile on her face. I smile curiously at her. What is she looking for? “You are so not what I expected.” “Oh, yeah?” She nods at me. “What were you expecting?” “I don’t know. You’re the Alpha, and you seemed quite scary when I first met you. But you’re so nice to me, and I really like you.” I smirk because I can’t help myself. “I really like you too.” That got me a smile. “I am the Alpha here, and I have a duty to my people. I have to be firm to keep order within the pack. But I’m not a monster, Starr.” She shakes her head. “No, I would never think of you as a monster, Kai. It’s just that when Davy and the others dragged me from the forest, I was terrified. Then Davy knocked me out, and I woke up in a strange place. Then you walked in, and I didn’t know what to think. You’re so tall and built, but you’re so handsome, and I...” She suddenly stops talking, wide-eyed, as if she’s said too much. She thought I was handsome. I could work with that. “You’re so beautiful, Starr. I’ve never seen eyes like yours, so big and expressive. Can I hold you? Please?” I need to feel my mate in my arms before my wolf loses control. Zion is as desperate as I am to hold Starr and show her that she is already everything to us. Starr looks at me for a moment before slowly nodding her head and reaching for me. I get out of my seat enough to lift her bridal style and sit back down with her in my lap. She wraps her arms around my waist, lays her head on my shoulder, face tucked into my neck, and I encircle my arms around her body. Goddess, she feels good in my arms. She’s slimmer than I initially thought, but I’ll soon fatten her up. I press a kiss to her forehead, and she holds me tighter. I thought she’d be a little rigid, but she is anything but. “It’s okay, Starr, I’ve got you.” “This feels so nice. You have such strong arms, Kai, arms that could keep me safe.” “I will always keep you safe, Starr. I swear on my life; you’ll always be safe with me.” She nods against me. She believes me, and that is all that matters. We sit in silence for a while, and I don’t think I’ve ever felt so at peace. Starr doesn’t let go, and I can feel her breath on my neck. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. Thank you, Grandmother. I know I’ve already said that once, but Starr is perfect. I might not understand why you sent me one who remembers nothing about herself. But I also know it’s a test of my strength and character. I won’t let you down, Grandmother. This beautiful girl will become my everything, and I will do everything to help her remember who she was, what happened to her, and how she came to be in the forest outside my home. If those who hurt her come looking, I’ll be ready, for none shall ever harm Starr again. I send a silent prayer of thanks to the Moon Goddess Selene, my grandmother, for the mate in my arms. I waited many years for this day, and finally, Selene answered my prayer. I know I said I didn’t want a mate, but I did. I was prejudiced in not wanting a mate I thought could have been a rogue or someone who could turn out to be the enemy. Starr still could be that person, but I don’t believe it to be true. ‘She’s perfect, Kai.’ I press another kiss to Starr’s head and smile. ‘That she is, Zion. She was made for us. Look how her body molds with mine.’ ‘Thank you for not abandoning or rejecting her.’ ‘I couldn’t do that if I tried, old friend. She’s been through so much, and she needs me.’ ‘I can feel her Lycan, Kai.’ ‘You can?’ ‘Yes. She isn’t answering me, but she’s there. I think she’s in Status Sleep, trying to recover from whatever happened to Starr. I’ll keep trying to reach her until I’m successful. In the meantime, you keep taking care of Starr because she’ll be the making of you.’ I roll my eyes playfully before cutting off my wolf. “Kai?” Starr finally sits up and looks at me. “Can we still look around the pack? I’d like to see where I’m going to be living. Perhaps meet everyone?” I smile while stroking the back of my hand down her soft cheek. Smiling is all I seem to be doing today. “We can do anything you want, beautiful. I took the liberty of picking some clothes and underwear up for you. Well, Iona did,” “Thank you.” I can see myself falling for this girl so hard my feet won’t touch the ground. I wrap my hand around the back of her neck and bring her forehead to mine. When she lays her hand on my face, I have to fight the urge to kiss her plush lips. Goddess, I want to kiss her and never stop! But I won’t; I’ll take things at Starr’s speed. I must keep vigil over the pack in case anyone comes looking for Starr. Not knowing who she is or where she came from could be problematic. Though I’m not sure anyone would ever come here, only a few know where our pack is located, and with good reason. However, if Starr has a family out there looking for her, they could involve the King. If her family is desperate enough to seek Royal help, they could end up here. On the other hand, Starr could have been running from someone who meant to cause her more harm. More than what she’d already suffered could only be death, and perhaps those who hurt Starr believed she was dead. As bad as it sounds, if those who hurt her were the enemy, then I pray they believe they’d killed her. If not and her family are looking, I’ll find out one way or the other. All I do know is Starr is mine, and no one is taking her from me!
