Over the next week, Spence and Jeff established a routine. They spent the mornings writing—which, as Jeff pointed out, was much easier to do now that they were in the same place at the same time. After lunch they’d take a couple of hours to relax. At one point, Spence suggested they start a garden, so they did, after consulting with Carol on what they needed. She lent them a shovel and hoe for turning the earth, which led to lots of joking about burying bodies and what plants would thrive on them when they decomposed. That was as far as they got, since they still needed to decide what to plant—which they kept putting off because there wasn’t a garden shop anywhere near the house.
