After a moment, Zayd's chilly expression melted and he loosened his grip on Lilyan's hand, rubbing his thumb soothingly across her skin. “I'm sorry,” he whispered, “I didn't mean to frighten you.” He offered an apologetic smile. “It's okay,” she smiled in return, “But why did you get so upset?” Zayd blinked, his smile falling into a blank expression. “How are you not upset?” he asked. He furrowed his brows and studied her intently, his golden eyes boring through her. She shrugged with a nervous laugh. “I don't know,” she admitted sheepishly, “I don't see what there is to be upset about, I guess? My situation sucks, sure, but there's nothing I can do about it.
