Abby waited for nearly half an hour, but still, there was no reply from Jason.
She checked the time.
It was late; perhaps he and Mia were already asleep.
The blood on her hands was already half dry; it felt sticky. She dragged herself into the bathroom, to wash it off.
The tap water felt icy, making her chill to the bone.
When she made it back to her bed, she took some painkillers and the anticancer drugs Mog prescribed.
It was one of those strong painkillers, one you don't want to take unless the pain's too much to bear, because it induces an addiction that'd eventually damage your brain.
Abby poured the rest of the painkillers out and stuffed them in an ordinary container.
Who was Jason Lewis again?
The guy she'd had a crush on since 16 years ago, the man she spent 6 years with, the man she had been married to for 4 years...
But other than that?
He was just a nobody.
Yeah. No big deal.
.......
Abby woke up when it was barely dawn.
Sleeping in wasn't really her thing.
She called her lawyer, asking him to draw up a divorce agreement.
Zack, her lawyer, was shocked.
But he knew not to ask.
He asked Abby what he should put down for property distribution and other stuff.
This was not something you could clear up on the phone; Abby hesitated a little before asking: "Zack, are you available today?"
"Yes, of course," Zack replied.
Abby: "Then can you come over, so we can settle the details?"
"Sure, I'll be over in a minute."
Zack was head of legal affairs at Sunny Group. Abby knew he could be trusted. Besides divorce papers, she also needed him to handle her will.
She sent Zack her address, before sitting down in front of her dressing table.
Altough she had no plans to go out today, she still wanted to put some makeup, making it less pale.
She smiled a little to her reflection in the mirror.
After today, she'd still have tomorrow.
Abby didn't know whether Zack had breakfast or not, so she made both of them breakfast just in case.
Her door bell rang when the clock hit 9 o'clock.
She took her apron off and opened the door.
It was Zack.
"President Abby."
"Please come in. Did you have breakfast?" Abby asked.
Zack said while changing into a pair of slippers: "Yeah I had."
Hearing the answer, Abby gave up the idea of having breakfast and making him wait. She drank a cup of milk before going back to the study with a cup of tea.
Zack had already taken out his laptop.
But when he heard Abby was gonna give most of her shares in Sunny Group to Jason Lewis, he stopped typing and his eyes darted to her.
"Are you sure? Sunny Group is your prenuptial property; your husband isn't entitled to that." To say that he was surprised was an understatement; he had seen hundreds of cases where couples were suing and fighting each other over the division of property; this was the first time he heard someone wanted to give up her prenuptial property to her spouse.
Besides, they were talking about billions here...this decision would influence all the other shareholders, and her father would never say yes.
In short, everything would turn upside down because of it.
Abby replied: "I'm aware of that. That's why I want to discuss with you about my wi..."
Before she could finish her words, the door bell rang.
"Please wait a moment." Abby got up to get the door.
The door opened a c***k, and she saw a dark and tall figure towering above her; cold radiated off the figure in waves.
Abby couldn't help taking a step back.
She looked up at Jason, and asked: "What brought you here?"
"I thought you asked me here." Jason's eyes, which had been pitch black, were now a little bloodshot. He had a cold aura around him that could scare people off.
He pushed the door open, and stepped in: "What do you mean by the text message last night?"
This question took Abby by surprise.
Then she remembered.
She snorted. So he came here for the divorce.
The man who couldn't even look at her without disgust, was here the first thing in the morning, because he wanted the divorce so bad that he couldn't wait another day.
Jason was a little pissed off by her attitude. He took a glance around, and suddenly, his eyes caught sight of a pair of leather shoes; man's leather shoes.
His eyes were immediately filled with rage.
He was already in a mood before he came here.
And he was never one to bottle up his emotion: he always let out his anger.
He grabbed Abby's wrist, his piercing eyes boring into hers, and his smile became even colder when he saw the makeup on her face: "I was wondering why you suddenly wanted to divorce. Found yourself a lover, I see. Guess I can't satisfy that slutty hole you got down there, isn't it?"
Abby felt her heart sink, as if an ancient anchor was dragging her down: "Jason Lewis, are you even listening to yourself?"
"You specifically asked me to come tomorrow, not today, 'cause you're fu*king with someone else, isn't it? Answer me!" Jason roughly dragged Abby into the living room; his grip was so strong that Abby felt her bone was going to crash any minute.
He threw her on the sofa, and tightened his hands around her throat, towering above her.
"I...I didn't..."Abby was scared. She didn't know what she did to earn that murderous look. Her lungs burned from lack of oxygen; she opened her mouth to get more air but couldn't...
Betrayal.
That was the thing Jason hated most in his entire life.
He didn't love Abby, but he'd never allow anyone to lay hands on something that was his, even if that meant he had to destroy it.
The thought that Abby was cheating on him made Jason so angry that he wanted to kill her right now, on the couch.
Abby felt the strong male hands tightening around her throat...instincts made her lift her hands, and try to break free from his grasp, but only in vain.
She felt her vision going black, and just as she thought she was about to die, Zack came out from the study.
He heard some noises and hurried out to check.
The minute he saw what was happening, he gripped Jason's shoulders: "Mr Lewis, what do you think you're doing?!"
Jason turned his eyes on him: "So you're the man she's cheating on me with?"
Zack quickly explained: "No, you're mistaken. I'm only here to draft you and Miss Abby's divorce papers." Afraid that Jason wouldn't buy his words, Zack took out his business card and handed it to Jason.
Upon this, Jason loosened his grip on Abby's throat, leaving her gasp for air and her form curling up and shaking in the sofa.
Zack sighed in relief before asking: "Mr Lewis, would you like to discuss with Miss Abby about your property division?"
Zack's words reminded Jason what he was here for.
The divorce.
A cold aura came off him.
He couldn't even figure out why the idea of divorce made him so angry.
Zack could feel his legs going weak under Jason's piercing gaze. He stood there with his head down, not daring to look at Jason.
Jason said only two words to him: "Get lost."
Zack took the opportunity and was out of the house in the blink of an eye, abandoning his computer on the desk of the study.
Abby's health had been deteriorating since she got cancer. Jason's grip left bruises on her otherwise flawless skin.
It took her a long moment before she could even out her breath.
It was not the first time Jason tried to strangle her, but it was the first time it took her so long to recover, as if life was already living her.
"Jason Lewis, did you want to kill me?"
