“S-shayne… I think my water broke.” Anna said with a terrified look on her face and two seconds later, she was hit with an unbearable pain. Shayne, who had no experience with pregnant women, was completely confused, so, she dialed Jacob’s number while trying to get Anna to the car. “Pick the f**k up!” She yelled as she dialed it for the fifth time. It had been ringing, but the irresponsible jerk wasn’t picking up. He had gotten her sister pregnant and claimed to love her, but when she needed him the most, he was nowhere to be found. Shayne hated that her sister was in love with such a man but, what could she do? Anna was in ‘ love ’. Anna and Jacob have been together for one year now. She worked as his secretary at Wades Empire for one year, and they soon started developing feelings for each other. But, Anna and Jacob were from different worlds, so she had to hide her feelings for a really long time and even when he proposed to her, she was reluctant to agree to his proposal because she knew that his family would never welcome her. The Wades family were like gods in Canada. They practically ruled the city with their wealth and influence. Jacob was the second son of the family, but he had his eyes on inheriting his father’s fortune. This is because his elder brother, Jamie, who was married, had failed to provide the family with an heir. All his children were females and even the doctors said that it would be impossible to have a male child. Three months after Anna and Jacob started dating, she got pregnant, which was really unexpected as Anna never expected to be a mum at twenty-four but, she wasn’t going to abort the child. Even Jacob wanted to keep the child. Of course, this was kept a secret from everyone. Even their relationship as a whole was a secret from the whole world. In Jacob’s words, “ Revealing something like this to the world might ruin my image. Let’s just enjoy what we have for now and when it’s time, everyone will find out. ” Was Anna okay with it? Of course not, but she had to compromise if she wanted the family she had always dreamed of. Now that her due date had arrived, she was unable to control her excitement because Jacob had promised to reveal her to the world and also get married as soon as she gave birth. Anna loved the idea of being married, but, she loved Jacob more and was willing to do whatever he wanted even if it meant hiding her pregnancy from the world and being locked up in her apartment. It was to save his reputation after all. As secretive as their relationship was, things changed when it was discovered that she was carrying a male child. Jacob immediately ran to his parents and bragged about giving them a grandson. For some strange reason, they doted on Anna and catered for all her needs. She was promised to become the daughter-in-law of the Wades family. As a twenty-four-year-old lady, Anna lacked nothing as Jacob’s girlfriend. But, over the past few months, she could feel them growing apart emotionally. It was as though Jacob was in a world of his own and cared less about her. Anna never voiced her complaints to him though. She knew how busy he was with work and did everything to reduce his stress. She called him less and even kept some of her worries to herself despite being nine months pregnant so that he didn’t have to be bothered by her. As long as Jacob was happy, she was happy. A few hours before her water broke, she called Jacob to try getting him to come to the house, since she was aware of her due date but, his response was cold. * * A FEW MINUTES AGO “I won’t be coming over today, Anna. Something came up.” Anna’s boyfriend, Jacob, said in a bored tone and a sigh left her lips. His excuses were getting really old, but she had to understand him since he was the son of the wealthiest family in the country; The Wades family. “The doctor said I'm due this week. Can you at least try to come over?” She said, rubbing her protruded stomach with a sad look on her face. “I can’t leave all of this just to be with you, Anna. This is the company we’re talking about. You know that I have to impress my father if I want to inherit the company. Don’t you want to get married? This is the only way we can get married.” His tone made her chest tighten as pain shot right through it. She could hear the frustration in his voice. “It’s alright. You don’t have to come over. I’ll manage. Just….take care of yourself, okay?” The words left her throat forcefully and all he does is hum before ending the call. As soon as the call ended, her sister and best friend, Shayne, raised her brows at her. “That’s who you want to get married to? Really, Anna?” She shook her head in disappointment. “Goodness, Shayne. We’re not going over this again.” Anna said, trying to dismiss the topic. She could already tell where Shayne was headed. “I don’t know how you can’t see that Jacob doesn’t love you. Maybe he did before but, not anymore.” Shayne sighed and pointed at Anna’s tummy. “You’re in your ninth month and will give birth anytime soon, but he has only visited you twice this month! Who does that to someone they love?” Her eyes were begging Anna to see some sense in what she was saying but, she knew that Anna was already blinded by love…false love. “Jacob loves me. He…he’s just been really busy this period. He sends me flowers and gifts and money and…” Anna said loyally, completely ignoring the voice in her head that agreed with Shayne. “Christ, Anna. I just hope he comes to his senses pretty soon. You’re taking too much from him, especially in your condition.” Shayne complained, shutting the topic down since she didn’t want her pregnant sister to be stressed. To Shayne, Anna was all that mattered. All she wanted was a good life for her as she had already gone through so much after their parents died. “Your nephew is craving some chicken sandwich. Why don’t you help him make some?” Anna said with a pout and Shayne giggled before leaning in to her tummy. “Of course! Your aunt will give you the world!” She patted Anna’s tummy and was about to stand up when she heard something splash. * * THE PRESENT Shayne single handedly took Anna to the hospital that was provided by the Wades family, and immediately she arrived, the doctors and nurses rushed to her since they knew that she was carrying the heir to the Wades Empire. Ten minutes later, Jacob walked into the hospital and as Shayne was panicking while waiting for her sister to give birth, she sighted him. “Where the f**k have you been? Anna was in so much pain and all she could think of was you, but you weren’t there!” She was trying her best to stay stable as she heard her sister’s screams from the hospital room. There was a cold look on Jacob’s face as he stared at her. It was so cold that it made shivers run down her spine. Something didn’t feel right. She looked behind him and noticed the train of bodyguards that accompanied him, and it finally dawned on her what he was trying to do. “Thank you for your help, Shayne, but, I’ll take it from here. I am the baby’s father after all.” he said with a smirk, and before she could register what was going on, she was being dragged out of the hospital. “Jacob! What do you think you’re doing? I swear to God if you hurt my sister, I will kill you!” She screamed as the men bundled her outside and threw her to the ground. They even guarded the door so that she wouldn’t try going back in. Jacob waited by the ward door with a smirk on his face. His dream was finally coming true. He was going to become the heir to the Wades Empire the second the child is born. * * Anna felt her strength fail her as she pushed but, she couldn’t give up. For the sake of Jacob and their child. “You can do this Anna.” One of the doctors said, and she pushed with all her might, beads of sweat forming on her head. “We see the head. One more push!” She heard them say and with tears in her eyes as she envisioned her little family, Anna pushed one last time and the next thing she heard was the sharp cry of her baby. As she stretched out her hand to hold her baby, a wave of weakness hit her, and she slumped on the bed, giving in to the darkness. One hour later, Anna opened her eyes and was met with a sudden silence. She looked around and noticed that all the doctors were gone, and she was all alone in the ward. “Shayne? Doctor? Is anyone out there?” She called out with a smile plastered on her face as she got ready to see her newly born baby. “Hello!” Anna’s heart was beating with excitement as she opened the door. “My baby… Where… where is my baby?” She asked with a smile, ignoring the pain she felt as she struggled to stay on her feet. “What baby?” She heard one of the doctors say, and she waved her hand at him. He probably wasn’t the one assigned to her. “Can I speak with my doctor? I want to see my child.” Just as she said the words, the family’s doctor, Doctor Fred, walked up to her. “What child, Miss Anna? You didn’t give birth to any child today. Are you mentally stable, Miss? Or do we need to take you to a psychiatrist?” He said and Anna felt her world spin. Was he calling her mad? She was sure that she had just given birth a few hours ago, so what in the world was happening? “Doctor Fred. You were in there with me a while ago. I have just given birth to a child, J.. Jacob’s child...my son.” She moved closer to him as she said frantically, but, his stance was unchanging. He looked her in the eye with an emotionless face and spat the most heart-wrenching words at her. “I think you have lost it, Miss Anna. You didn’t give birth to a child today. You only came here for a checkup.”
