Two hands gripped my hips and pulled me into a room. The scent of lavender hit me… Roman. He spun me around and pushed me against the door shutting it with my back. His lips landed on mine; it stunned me. It took me a second to process what was happening, my first ever kiss. A swift moment passed before I grabbed hold of him with both hands pulling him closer, needing more. Problem with this moment of weakness is, Roman was not mine, I was promised to his brother. I am a lab baby, Alpha Constance’s million-dollar investment. The Cultivation is an organization of scientist that artificially produce the ideal child. They had me bread to their exact standards and requirements for their son Alex and the next Luna of the Osmium Pack. Although Alex and Roman are twins, because Alex was the first to see the light, he was named the next Alpha. My chosen mates’ parents are the closest thing I have ever had to a mother and a father, but no matter how much kindness they showed me, or how welcoming they were, their loyalty was always to their own children, leaving me feeling isolated, and alone. The Cultivation raises and educates you according to your purpose, and at fourteen, they send you to your new home. Basically, your first transformation can happen any time after fourteen, although most commonly it is around your 18th birthday, but this way they avoid us mating with another and becoming a waisted product. Once we are shipped off, we Cultivation is free from any liability, but it did mean the Constance’s had me home schooled with already mated teachers, and my attendance at events and gatherings were very limited. Although the Constance’s did enforce mandatory family dinner a few nights every week where we all would dine together, including Roman and their sister Abigail. Those nights were my favorite where for just a small amount of time, I could feel normal, play with other children and not feel like its a reoccurring blind date with Alex.
My first meeting with him was very sweet. We were young, but he took my hand like a gentleman and placed a soft kiss on it, welcoming me to our home, and our future. I would find myself daydream about that moment, having it replay over and over again in my mind, holding on to the promise of our home and our future. We spent lots of time together, bonding and getting to know each other but as we grew older the time spent was less playful and light hearted and more forced with uncomfortable silences. Alex got to go to a normal school and got to socialize with other pack members, while I was kept away and separated. My sixteenth year after my creation day I still had no sign of transformation nearing so I was allowed to attend a formal event hosted by Alpha and Luna Constance, it was to show off their money well spent. I had long blond hair that hang straight reaching my lower back, with pale white skin and eyes as bright blue as the moon’s reflection on the ocean. I was placed in combat training since I could walk and continued with it as part of my homeschooling. Therefore, I appeared fit, but not to muscular. Just enough muscles on every curve that accentuated my hourglass figure. Along with the perfect posture, walk, even greeting all drilled into me at the Cultivation. I looked like a mystical creature, fair and softspoken, something only Alpha Constance had, and no one else could ever possess, that had all the neighboring packs envious, and Alpha Constance loved it, he reveled in it. Unfortunately, that was also the first time I saw Alex with another girl, I would lie if I said it did not break my heart, but Roman caught me, he was my strength that night, sitting with me, listening to my sobs and just holding me till I ran out of tears. I pulled myself together quickly though, I knew my role, I knew my purpose and my responsibly. It was a daily drill at the Cultivation and no she wolf was going to intervene with the Constance’s investment. Roman became my protector from that day on, he would always pick fights with Alex in my defense. Stand up for me when the girls Alex would be screwing had stuff to say about me or make up rumors that could ruin my reputation. The girls became more, more often, and as hard as I tried to maintain a relationship, we grew more distant. His parent was however set on our union and no matter how much Alex fought them they did not budge. As we grew older Roman would joke around with us being a possibility, he always teased me and although I wanted something to happen between us so many times, I never allowed it. I was not my own person, I was created for a sole purpose, I was meant for Alex, I was promised to Alex. My genetics would produce Alex strong heirs, strengthening the Constance bloodline and the Osmium Pack. If I had to refuse the Constance’s, I know it would mean the end of me. Alpha Constance would sooner have me dead than have me fall into the hands of another pack.
Tonight… tonight was different. It was the 18th year since my creation day but still had no signs of transformation nearing, so I was allowed to attend a formal dinner Alpha Constance was hosting at the pack house. It was a few of the neighboring packs and their high ranking official as well as ours. A truly boring affair, just a bunch of old men measuring d**k. That’s al it ever was, who has more and who’s is better, bigger, stronger.
“Can you try and respect your chosen mate for once in your life and not be seen with a bunch of pack w****s hanging from you hips?” Roman was scolding Alex through his teeth, I am sure he meant for it to me more of a whisper. I hated that they were always fighting, and it always involved me, but it felt good knowing someone was always in my corner. It took away the small hint of loneliness that was a constant in my life.
“What is it with you and my chosen mate? Is she another thing I have that is so close you can tase it but will never have, much like being Alpha?” Alex challenged Roman with a Cocky grin on his face.
“Boys!” Luna Constance immediately jumped in.
“We have guests, and many ears listening” she said in a high-pitched whisper as she shoed away the girl and intertwined an arm with each of her sons.
“You can continue your little spat after everyone has left, for now you smile and play nice” she turned to a low whisper yet it heled a hefty warning.
“Never grows old” I heard Abigail remarking as she walked straight past me not even sparing me a glance. Abigail was younger than me and he brothers, there was a time I thought we would be friends, but instead she always kept her distance, she always supported Alex when he tried to end the arranged union and although I have only heard how every one gushed about the sweet Abigail, sweet was one side of hers I have never seen.
I took a deep breath and followed after her into the community area where everyone was gathered for a welcoming drink before dinner was severed. I moved to where Alex and Roman was chatting with a bunch of the other guest, teenagers of some of the officials attending, although I knew everyone would not be happy with me joining the little group, Roman was there and I needed him and his sarcasm to get through tonight. Roman immediately moved to make space for me to join the conversation, but Alex and a few other kids immediately left, making a clear statement I was not wanted. Roman placed his elbow on my shoulder with a big smile plastered on his face.
“I love how you so naturally repel the trash of the world” He whispered in my ear, obviously not wanting anyone to hear the disrespect, but the moment I felt his breath in my ear goosebumps rushed down my spine making me immediately take a step back, I needing to put some distance between us. I swallowed hard, looking at him, trying to gather myself. A restless feeling grew in me, one I did not understand but it made me stare at Roman for a second to long. His big blue yes staring down at me. He was tall with thick dark brown hair. He had it shaves at the sides of his head with patterns cut into it while he left the top long and flowy. It shaped his face perfectly showing off his broad jaw and massive smile, a smile that said trouble.
“Are you ok Kins?” Roman looked at me with his brows furrowed. It pulled me from my staring trance I was in. Kens… he was the only one who had a nick name for me. Although I hated nick names and told him multiple times my name is Kinsley, it only fueled his need to have a nick name for me even more. Now it grew on me, not that I ever would admit it but tonight, it made my stomach tie in a knot. I took a deep breath and stepped back a few more steps.
“I am fine, I think I should sit this dinner out though” I tried to excuse myself when Alpha Constance waved me over. I hesitated for a moment but knew there would be no excuse making it ok to refuse my Alpha, so I made my way over putting on my million-dollar smile and flaunting Alpha Constance investment as was always expected of me at these events. After a few more polite greetings and soft giggles at the other Alphas horrible jokes I finally got a moment to breathe again when Alpha Morgan excused himself and Alpha Constance for a private conversation. I rushed to the lady’s room, wanting to gather myself and wanting to get away from this zoo for just a moment, I can not wait till I transform and me and Alex finally complete this mating. It would have Alpha Constance way less paranoid over losing the money he had spent on me and perhaps I would gain more freedom and be less of a show item. Then I could feel more normal. I ran into a wall making me stumble a few steps back, I was so in thought that I did not see where I was going. Looking up I realized my big wall was no one else than Alex, he had come in from the balcony just as I was passing the door. He flushed me a cunning smile, he never took the smile to give me any positive expressions. I turned my gaze, staring at him as he walked away. What was that all about? I looked out the door and saw Roman leaning against the balcony, before I could even stop myself, I ran to him and wrapped my arms around him, he lifted one of his arms to look underneath who was holding on to him so tightly, once he saw it was me he broke out in a soft chuckle.
“You ok there?” he asked through his laughter. I loosened my grip to let him turn but then immediately clung to him again.
“I just need, to feel normal” I finally confessed. His arms wrapped around me and I could feel the overwhelming emotions flood away. We stood like this for a moment and when my breathing regulated, it hit me. My eyes jumped opened, widely stretched from the disbelief of what I had done.
“s**t, I’m so sorry” I quickly pulled away, horrified of my laps of control.
“It’s ok, Kens.” He reluctantly let go of me.
“No, no its not!” I covered my face with both hands as I turned away from him, ashamed that I let my emotions get the better of me. He wrapped his arms around me from behind holding me tightly against himself.
“Kinsley, breath. You are human and you get effected just like every other single person.” He whispered as he squeezed his grip on my middle tighter like a hug, while resting his chin on my shoulder. He has become my safety; he has always protected me and without knowing it he became my person. The one I needed and depended on, I cannot allow this to continue, I will have to separate myself from him, for the sake of my chosen mate and my pack.
“Roman, I am promised to Alex.” The words came out barley audible with no conviction. I was cherishing this moment. A moment I had something because I chose it, not because it was my purpose, but I had to honor my duties. I slowly removed his hands from my middle to walk away, but he grabbed hold of one hand and slowly lifted it to his mouth while looking at me with his big blue eyes. Reminding me of the day Alex welcomed me to the Pack and kissed my hand the same way. As children Alex and Roman looked identical, or perhaps it was just because I didn’t know them in the beginning. They both had long blond hair and light blue eyes but as they aged Roman’s features became darker, leaving him with dark hair and a dark stubble whereas Alex remained blond, but they both still had the same striking blue eyes, that never changed. A smile creeped up my face from the childhood memory, this should be Alex doing this. I slowly removed my hand from his to walk inside. Opening the door I was Luna Constance at the glass door and windows. She was probably watching the entire exchange between me and Roman. s**t. Her gaze never traveled to me when I walked in, instead she was still staring at Roman, and he had no shame. He flashed her a big smile and waved at his mother like we were not just caught in a very compromising situation.
“We have been looking everywhere for you!” She said in annoyance as she gave roman a scolding stare.
“I am sorry Luna, I needed some fresh air” I tried to explain.
“Alone?” She asked accusingly.
“Alex was out here as well. For a moment at least” It was true he was out there for a moment, just not while I was out there, but she knew Alex’s reluctance towards me, which would let her make the assumption that Alex had left me out there alone with Roman and not that I practically ran into his arms.
“I am sorry my dear” Luna Constance cupped my face, now with an apologetic softness and a hint of pity in her eyes.
“He is a stubborn boy, the only reason he is fighting it is because we made the decision. If we were against it, I am sure he would have grabbed you and marked you on the spot. You know how these Alpha men are” she patted me gently before dropping her hand from my cheek.
“Come, we will be called into the dining room soon.” She turned to go into the community area and I followed after her only to feel isolated again the moment I walked in. I stood to the side, praying for dam dinner call already so I can be done with this night. These overwhelming and restless feelings swarming in me tonight is making me reckless and I cannot afford to make mistakes. The moment a waiter walked in to announce dinner was ready I basically downed my drink and made my way out the room again.
