The US women's team gathered in the meeting room of the Olympic Training Center. A huge flat screen tv hung from the wall pulling the women's attention forward as a broadcaster began naming which teams will face off for the starting of the 2016 Olympics. The women sat eagerly awaiting, biting their nails and crouched forward in chairs as they announced teams in order.
"Group A: United States of America" the women held their breath as the man's British accent filled the room saying their country, many hoping to go against a tough team, waiting the challenge. "New Zealand." By now most of the women had a clue on who was next, the broadcaster paused as he waited to announce the next team for them to face. Slight whispers could be heard throughout the women praying that he say the team they all clearly wanted to take down. "Sweden."
The women erupted in excitement, high-fives followed by "yes!" Clearly showed just how badly the women wanted to play against Sweden. Everyone turned around laughing and looked at a smiling Massy, she sat almost childlike her face crawled with eagerness to play them right then and there. By now their was no secret to the boiling beef that had been brewing between Sweden and Massy. Just as much as they hated her, she hated them and she got no better joy out of making them hate her more than to play against them and beat them, she had yet to loose to Sweden, only playing them twice since her career started with Team USA and she didn't have plans to start.
"Hey Beckham, you going to be able to control your temper?!" Megan asked Massy trying not to laugh, she smiled as she ran her hand through her short platinum blonde hair.
Massy turned her head from her phone and smiled. "There's no such thing as control! The whole team is going down. I'm really just looking forward to the one who tried to break my v****a! THAT'S my date for the match I can't wait to dance with her! Ooooo I am ready right now!"
Massy said giving Megan a evil smile. Jill smiled and turned her attention to the middle of the room and looked at Massy.
"Beckham!" Jill called out to her. Once the team had learned of her engagement to Odell, it took them no time to call her by his last name, they jumped at the opportunity, a dream to actually yell out the Beckham name to a teammate while on the soccer field. Massy turned her attention to her head coach, her eyebrows shot up in question. "I have great news for you, we're also playing Sweden on the 12th!"
Massy stood up in excitement, her arms stretched out on either side of her. "Coach! Don't you dare get me excited like this! Don't you raise my blood pressure!" Massy pointed her index finger at Jill.
"Home match!" She added to her excitement.
Massy touched the back of her hand to her forehead and breathed out heavily as if she was going to pass out due. Megan sat up and dramatically grabbed Massy's right arm as if she was checking her blood pressure. The team began laughing at the dramatic show Massy put on.
Massy looked down and smiled at the infamous quote his LSU coach would tell the men pumping them up while in the locker room before every game.
"Affirming the status of a collective bargaining agreement, a federal judge sided with U.S. Soccer on Friday, ruling that players on the women's national team are prohibited from going on strike by their collective bargaining agreement. The case was filed in March, when several players accused the federation of wage bias.
The status of the players' labor agreement had been in dispute, but expired at the end of 2012 but was extended by a memorandum of understanding that the players association had recently threatened to end if "significant progress" wasn't made in talks for a new contract. Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman's ruling removed the possibility that the American women might refuse to play in this summer's Rio Olympics as part of the maneuvering over their union contract. The specter of a work stoppage led U.S. Soccer to file a complaint in early February, seeking a court order to prevent a potential strike. As a result, the players will now continue to operate under the terms of a CBA that dates to 2005.
The federal wage case that was filed by several star players including Carli Lloyd, Hope Solo, Massy Arias, and Alex Morgan on a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that accuses U.S. Soccer of paying the reigning World Cup champions far less than it does their male counterparts. The U.S. women's national team will begin its Olympics campaign in Brazil on Aug. 3, facing off against New Zealand."
The Google alert mentioning Massy's name caused Odell's phone to light up. Odell put his fork down and replaced it with his phone.
"What's wrong?" Heather asked realizing her son got silent. She looked up at him, then looked back down at her plate and poked at her food with a shiny silver fork. Odell slid his phone across the table and began eating again. Heather's long index finger grazed over the screen, she frowned as she skimmed through the two hour old article. "Wow, this is getting serious... They're really standing up against FIFA." Heather slid Odell's phone back towards him. "First the turf, now this."
"I'm not surprised, once Ace sets her mind to something there is no pulling her away from it until she's satisfied. As much as she hates when you say it, but she's definitely Bo's daughter."
"You think she'd give up her first Olympics to prove a point?" Heather asked c*****g her head to the side and frowning. If there was one thing Odell knew for sure about Massy, it was her inability to take "No" for an answer, if she was going to fight for something she truly believed in she was going to follow through with it until someone was lying on their backs and 9 times out of 10, it was Massy who was left hovering, staring down at her damaged opponent.
Odell looked up from his plate. "Yes." He said without hesitation. Heather smiled, loving his answer and how fast he was to answer. She looked back down at her plate. "Why are you smiling so hard?" He asked frowning at her in confusion.
Heather shook her head. "I'm just proud of the both of you." She shrugged her shoulder not making a big deal of the speech she was getting ready to laps into. "I'm just happy that you've found something in someone that makes you want to be them forever." Heather was just happy he was done bouncing and juggling multiple women.
Odell looked down at his mother's wedding ring, which was very similar in shape and size to Massy's. "Forever, huh?"
"Oh, don't make it sound so miserable!" Heather said laughing. "As long as you keep growing and learning about one another, you'll be fine. Always continue to learn, learn something knew everyday about each other."
"You're making me miss her even more, right now." Odell twisted his lips to the side, then frowned. Massy left that morning to Seattle for a Friendly games against Brazil.
"Good. Makes you want her around you even more. Cherish that space, then cherish the time with her." Heather winked at Odell and smiled as she raised her fork and took a bite of the her food.
