When he hears a droning noise, Juin is still thinking about how he can save his men. It seems to come directly from the earth, like an earthquake. Everybody sits up, their heads tilted and listening. It sounds like a great and mighty army moving over the ground, like the hoof beats of thousands of horses moving over the sand. Juin looks quickly toward Jorgensen and Galemi and is satisfied to see that they are playing their roles well. They had not risen out of curiosity like the rest of the men and were lying there.
The droning noise increases in volume, and Juin hears the excited voices of men inside the fort. He goes to the window and notices that some guards are running out to the courtyard and start looking up into the sky. And Juin knows it is the sound of a heavy plane approaching.
