‘What ship is it?” the captain called out to the man in the crow’s nest atop the main mast. “Can’t see yet, cap’n, but I fear it’s a man o’ war.” In a few moments the ship had all its sails up and Caroline could feel the speed increase. No one took any notice of Caroline, who stood at the side of the ship and watched. After half an hour of sailing it did not seem as if the ship behind them was getting any closer.
