Michael
After Elenor storms out of the house, Von turns to me and sighs.
“Wanna tell me what the was all about?”
Von groans in frustration while scrubbing his hands over his face.
I’ve known Von all my life. He’s a friend of the Knight family. He is also a Lord within the Vampire Kingdon, thanks to his father, Lord Andrei Nistorn, a Vampire Demon hybrid. Von’s mother was a Dragon. She wasn’t Andrei’s mate, but they had a relationship. Von was a product of that relationship.
Andrei and Calista were together for centuries before she found her mate and left with him. The woman walked away from her son without a second thought. Sure, he was centuries old himself by then, but still.
Von and his father moved back to Transylvania – I know, right, cliché Vampires – until around two hundred years ago when they returned to the Vampire Kingdom. Things were different for them because they no longer resided in England as the Vampire King had relocated to America.
As the Vampire King is married to my second cousin Esme, Andrei and Von are well-known to our family.
It’s not unusual for Von to disappear for long periods. The man is ancient, and it’s not like anyone needs to keep tabs on the man. However, I know Von has been checking in with the Vampire King. Aidan mentioned something about Von traveling the last time I saw him. That was three months ago, so Von must have been sending messages home somehow.
“Von, speak to me. What’s going on? Why have you been parading as a dog, of all things?”
“I told you why, Michael. I wouldn’t have stayed here if Elenor and Edmund hadn’t told me their secrets. They needed me here.”
I scrub my hands over my face. “But you could have introduced yourself, become their friend, and checked in on them periodically. You didn’t need to remain a damn dog. You’re a Vampire Lord, Von!”
Von nods. “I know. I have a lot of explaining to do. But I was already in the form of a dog when they found me. I stayed that way because they expressed how angry they were with me. I would have changed back when the time was right, but it never seemed to be. But what are the odds I would have bumped into them of all people?” He chuckles sardonically. “My brother and sister!”
“What?”
What the hell?
This is insane!
“I thought your brother and sister lived with your mother in England?”
Von nods. “They did until she took off and left them with her mate. I don’t know where she went or why she left. I don’t understand why she didn’t send Elenor and Edmund to my father.”
“How did they end up here and lying to the Dragon King about who they were? How were they even able to do that?”
Von tips his head back momentarily while breathing deeply through his nose.
“Elenor has the ability to manipulate the minds of many. Of course, the Dragon King cannot be manipulated. For him to have believed what he was told, he trusted the people he saw before him. He would have no reason not to when they didn’t come here with ill intent.”
Fair enough.
“As for why they came here… From what Elenor and Edmund said, our mother’s mate sold them to an institution as test subjects.”
What the hell?
“Instead of that stupid bitc.h who birthed us sending the twins home to our father, she left them like they were nothing to her! Look, I need to speak with my brother and sister. I have a lot of explaining to do, and it cannot wait.”
“I am so confused,” I mumble. I feel like I got lost in some weird soap opera.
‘You’re telling me.’ Dante scoffs. ‘If Elenor is Von’s full-blooded sibling, how is she pregnant? From what we know, female tribrids like Elenor can’t have children. It’s a fluke if the men get someone pregnant. But the females? It’s never been recorded.’
‘Huh.’ I hadn’t thought about that. “Von, before you go,”
He looks at me and sighs. “What is it?” He asks.
“Elenor and Edmund are your full siblings?”
“Yes.”
“You’re one hundred percent sure?”
Von looks at me while crossing his arms over his chest. “Yes. My father didn’t know about the twins until King Adian sent him on a mission to England. While there, he bumped into my mother. She had Edmund with her, and Father instantly knew that Edmund was his son. How could he not when Edmund looks a lot like my grandfather?
“Father was naturally angry, and even more so when Elenor came around the corner. As you know, my grandmother is a Vampire and my grandfather is a Demon, making my father a hybrid. My mother is a Dragon, and Father was warned about ever getting my mother pregnant. The ramifications for such a tribrid child could be detrimental. Not just because it would be unlikely for them to sire children, but their mental health would suffer.
“I was unplanned, obviously, but the twins certainly were. On my father’s side, at least. Mother wanted to try and be a mother again because she failed so miserably with me. Vampires don’t instantly know when they have impregnated someone the way Lycans, Werewolves, and Dragons do.
“Mother would have known. She also knew the Vampire Council would have suggested a termination. Perhaps that’s why she took off again to protect her children. I don’t know.” He shrugs.
I squint my eyes. “Again?”
He nods and sighs. “Anyway, my father demanded access to his children. By ancient Vampire law, he could have taken them from Mother. But the children got upset, thinking they would be without their mother. So, Father forfeited that right as long as he could see them. They were already eight by this point.”
I hold my hand up, stopping him. “How old are they, exactly?”
He smirks. “Twenty-nine.”
“Then, how the fuc.k are they Andrei’s kids?”
Von shrugs again. “Mother came to see me and ended up in my father’s bed the entire two weeks she was there. She claimed to love her mate, but she had no problem cheating on him. The poor fool even believed the twins were his until they were born, and there was no bond. He stayed with her, so he must have forgiven her infidelity.
“My father hasn’t seen the twins in five years. They disappeared with no trace. Father was heartbroken. He fell into a depression and left. I haven’t seen him in years. Before leaving, he told me he would not return without his beloved children. I don’t even know if he’s still alive because he stopped getting in contact with me just before I was attacked.
“I was out there searching for my brother and sister. I thought that if I could find them, my father would return. But they found me. I have tried to reach my father, but it has been to no avail.
“Elenor and Edmund are angry with me because I swore always to protect them. I was supposed to meet them so we could travel to the Vampire Kingdom together. I had never been late before, but I was late that day. I will regret that day – the day their stepfather sold them to an institution as payback for my mother leaving him.”
My eyes widen in shock. “What the fuc.k?”
“Hmm. It’s not my story to tell, and I don’t have time anyway. I need to find Elenor and Edmund and explain myself.”
He turns away from me. But I grab his arm, stopping him. “Wait, one more thing.”
“What?” Von sighs.
“If Vampire, Demon, Dragon tribrids can’t have children, how is Elenor pregnant?”
Von looks at me while running his tongue over his top teeth. “It’s not that they can’t have children, it’s just unlikely. Only two males ever managed to procreate, but that was many years ago. One female was able to carry a child, but the baby died before it breathed life. However, in this case, Elenor is not pregnant, Michael.”
“What? I’m confused.”
Von rolls his eyes. “When Elenor met her mate in the woods, it triggered the curse of our kind. If he had stayed and marked her, no of this would have happened. However, he ran without rejecting Elenor, so the curse has my sister believing she is with child.
“Unless we find Elenor’s mate and force the rejection, when Elenor believes she’s about to give birth, it will kill her. Now, if you’re done questioning me, I need to find Elenor and Edmund.”
I stand with my mouth hanging open in shock as Von walks away from me.
What a fuckin.g mess!
