Technically it was a bear pit, a remnant from a long defunct zoo of the Victorian era, but still not a place that most people would want to spend their few last moments of life in. Eastham Woods had originally been designed as a ‘Pleasure Garden’ in the mid-1800s and had included a zoo, monkey house and bandstand, all of which were serviced by a ferry that brought visitors across the River Mersey for day trips. Over a hundred years later, the zoo had long gone and much of the ‘spectacles’ had long since fallen into disrepair. These days it was used by dog walkers, ramblers and people bringing a family picnic in the summer month
