Chapter 1

What it's like to be a Brenner?

I started running when they start chasing me. I don't know why they wanted me. I just want some peace, I just want to live as a normal teenager. I went inside a forest and try to hide from them, but it's hard because it's too many of them. I just keep running, I don't care if I'm tired cause being tired makes me weak. Until I realize that I'm too far from them so I try to hide behind a tree.

It's really quiet and the only noise I hear is my breath and the leaves that are dancing from a tree, and a little noises from the people who are chasing me from the distance. I don't really know why they are chasing me, to be honest I don't really know how I got here.

I can't remember.

"HE'S HERE!!" Someone shouted and point out the light from his flashlight at my face. I was scared so i tried to run again but someone pulled my arm. "Stop! Let me go!!" I scream. His hand is putting too much pressure to my arm that makes me hard to move, the other man hold my other arm. I tried to release myself from them, but I can't.

"Do you think you can run away from us? No." The man said. Until I just felt that my head is starting to put so much pressure to my body that causing me so angry. "Let me go!!" I shout that make them let go of my arms. I felt an energy that is released by my body. The air blew away from me and I felt the ground move like there was an earthquake but the different is that it just move away from me and back again where I was standing. It made a loud noise, it was like a big root being pulled out in the ground causing the trees to fall down in a domino way.

And after a second, it felt peace, no sound just silence.

I slowly open my eyes and I was shock on what I saw. The trees that are near me are now lying on the ground. And the people who are chasing me....

Are now headless.

"AAAAA!!" I screamed and I open my eyes. I take a deep breath, multiple times. I can't breath like someone is choking me.

I look to my phone when it rang. It's my alarm clock.

It's 8:45 in the morning and my class starts at 10. I went to my bedrooms bathroom to take a pee. After peeing I take my bath, fix myself and fix my bed. I went down to take my breakfast. I just cook some bacon and egg and put it in my bread.

This is my life, nothing special nothing important I just lived my life in a boring way or should I say, normal way? Well I lived my life like the other teenagers out there. Well sometimes it's not boring when I hang out with my friends every Friday night, and today is Friday.

May 16, 2042

My friend said that May 16 is a very special day for them, but not for me. Why? Because I was born on May 16, 2025. Yes that's right today is my 16th birthday. I don't usually celebrate my birthday at all, they celebrate my birthday but I don't. It is because I lived my life for two years, well three years from now.

I have life for 16 years but I only lived them for three, why? I don't know, because I don't remember. I was like living inside of an empty box, nothing is in there except for myself. Every day, every year, I always felt like being inside in that empty box.

I went to the garage to start my car and go to Willington Academy, where I study. Willington Academy was built where the Amusement Park was build here in Friday Harbor years ago, town in Washington. The Amusement Park burnt without knowing the reason before celebrating the Independence Day.

I open the radio, maybe there are some interesting news to hear. I love listening to music and knowing what is going on in this world. If I am in my mood I prefer to listen to music, but if  not, I listen to news or read news.

"A blue whale from Ocean Park in Friday Harbor, was found missing only this morning at 7 am. They believe that the Blue Whale was kidnapped or stolen by someone who is working inside the Ocean Park. The guard was asleep for hours and they believe that there is something on their drink that make them sleep." The news anchor said.

Stupid news. A Blue Whale? Being kidnapped? It's impossible, a Blue Whale is like a boat because of its height. It can't be stolen like that or kidnapped easily without being planned, well if it was planned, then why? Do they want to pet a Whale? But the Blue Whale in the Ocean Park is not that big, they said it's rare having a Blue Whale that small. They said that, that whale is special because of it's rare condition on his brain and nerves that makes it different to the other whales. That Blue Whale is the only Whale inside the Ocean Park. The marine saves that Whale and they decided that they will send him in the biggest Ocean Park in Washington that was build behind a real Ocean because they can't put him back in the Ocean because there is a danger waiting for him there, specially because of his condition.

I wonder why people treat the one who has a rare condition as a special one? Am I special? Because you know, I have a rare condition in my brain. Does that makes me special?

"The question is where did they bring the Whale and why do they want the Whale." The news anchor said. Nowadays Sharks, Whale and other sea creatures can be found inside of an Ocean Park because Earth is healing and they said it's a miracle, they said too that the virus that spread all over the world on the year of 2019 until the middle of the month of 2021 has a good impact in Earth, but they are not happy about it because lot of lives had been lost that time. Well I think everything has a reason, even the bad ones.

I turn off the radio when I approach the school. It's already 9:56 in the morning. To be honest I don't really care if I'm late. Because my teacher didn't even care too.

My life isn't perfect to be honest, but I have everything when it comes on money and things that the others don't have. That's why a lot of people are jealous to me, but they didn't know what my story is, but how do they know if I don't have one? To be honest I'm happy to have everything but the only thing I don't have that everything have is a family, and a memory.

I open the door of my classroom and went inside. It's exactly 10 am and our teacher start lecturing.

After 2 hours, finally the bell rang.

"Happy Birthday Jack."

"Hi, have a nice birthday"

Every single person inside the school greeted me. To be honest lot of students here in Willington Academy know me, not just in school, I mean the whole town. The reason of being a famous person here in Friday Harbor because I'm a Brenner, and I live at the old mansion here that was build in the late 20s.

People at my town know Fajardo Brenner because he is the "so far, so great" mayor here in Friday Harbor, he is a doctor too before he become one of  the local mayor, he is the President's best friend by the way.

I don't know what the President's name and appearance, I just know that he is a good person. By the way nowadays there are 2 important Local Government, Local Mayor, and a Local President. Those 2 Local Governments wasn't controlled by the real Government of Washington. That's the law today. As far as those 2 important Local Government will take care of their people.

The Local President has more power than a Local Mayor. Like the local mayor is the new secretary. This is the new law of 2030s for us to feel safe and protected. And I like it, but I don't feel protected at all because I have no support of an adult ones or should I say parents? But I know I can handle myself alone, I can protect myself by my own.

By the way my uncle and the President died and a lot of people too when an unknown bomb explode somewhere here in Washington, year 2036. I don't have the exact date because there's  a legends that people forget what happened before and after the explosion.

They said that, that explosion is the biggest mystery of all time here in Washington until now, because the place where the explosion came from is still unknown, and the reason why it exploded is still unknown too.

It made a big damaged here in Washington, specially here in Friday Harbor. That time almost everything was destroyed, but after a year, things goes back to normal but a bit different.

"Happy Birthday Jack!" Justin greet me while holding a cake I was shock, so I look at him and my two other friends Max and Maxine are singing. It gets the attention of the other student that make them sing the birthday song too for me.

"Blow the cake Jack." Max said, so I did. They all clap after I blew the cake and after they sang the birthday song

This is what it's like to be a Brenner. If you are a Brenner, you have the attention of everyone and the whole town knows you. And I don't want it. I don't know why, but I just don't. Being a Brenner, assume that you will always have an enemy. Why? Like I said, they are all jealous to you.

"Yes it's your birthday." Max said while we're walking on the hallway. "You don't look happy." Justin said. "Aren't you used to it? We we're like friends for three years now." Maxine said in a mocking way. We just laugh because it's true.  We sat down on the chair inside the cafeteria and eat the cake. "What's your plan for tonight Jack? And wait, is it just me or its really Friday where we go out and have some fun?" Max ask. "It's just coincidence Max, and to be honest. I still don't have a plan for tonight." I answered. "You always don't have a plan for your birthday Jack. " Maxine said.

We stop talking for a minute to finish the cake. I realized that some other students here are looking at us. All of the people here in town thought that I have the perfect life. That I have everything and that I am happy for it.

I am not happy specially when I have a secret that need to be protected, a secret that only my friends know. And yeah sure I am happy for the money, the house and everything I have, except for the attention, because sometimes those attentions are the one who can destroy my life once I made a mistake. And they are probably stabbing me at my back and judge me for what they see.

I'm tired of not having a memories. I want to know my past, I need to know my past.

"Jack!" Suddenly,  I stop thinking about my life and other people when Maxine called my name. "Are you upset?" She asks. "Why?" I ask her and look to my other friends.

"The table is shaking." Justin said. "Oh. Sorry. I was thinking about my past life." I said. "You said you don't have memories, why are you thinking about your past life!!" Max said in a confusion. "Shut up, the people can hear you, I mean. I was thinking about finding my past, the answer of my 'a lot of question' thing." I said.

They all agreed. Yes, no one knew that I don't have memories, they just knew that I was comatose for Two years. Today is my birthday, I want to do something new. I want to live my life as a normal teenager. I mean, I just don't want to live my life in a same way, over and over again.

I need something new, to kill this boring life even just for one night. "I have a crazy idea for my birthday today..." I said that make my friends stop talking to each other. They are waiting for me to talk. I stand to my chair and shout here inside of the cafeteria about my plan this evening. "I'm going to host a birthday party at the mansion 7 pm tonight! I mean a real party! Everyone are invited!"

"Wait what? A party? Are you insane?" Maxine said. "Why? You don't want?" I ask her back. "I mean... I'm excited it's just your different today." She said.

I smiled to my friends and look around. I don't want people will think about bad things about me. I want them to know, that I am good, and that I am different to the other popular guy we saw in movies or real life who doesn't have a good attitude.

*Loud noise from the people and from the speaker*

I didn't expect to see many people here at the mansion, I thought they're not coming. They are all jumping and dancing from the played music. They are all greeting me happy birthday and saying that I host a great party tonight. This is the first ever party this school year.

"This is a great party! I love it!" Maxine said in a loud voice. We are talking loud here because we can't hear each other. "Thanks Maxine!! Where's Justin and Max?!"

  "I don't know! I only see Max but Justin-- what the hell!" Maxine said when some boy spills a drink to Maxine's dress. "I'm sorry I didn't mean too!!" The guy said. As far as I know, his name is Charles, he is the second richest boy in school besides me. He has a perfect life and a complete family. To be honest, I am jealous to him because I wish I have a complete family too, like him. But the difference between me and him is that he is just known in school but not in whole town. "Hey Jack! Nice Party by the way!" Charles said. "Thanks! I'm glad you make it!" I answer politely with a smile on my face. "Yeah, and I'm glad you invite everyone! I didn't expect that the mansion will be this big!" He said. And the other thing, he is a normal 15 years old boy, and I'm not, I'm not sure if I'm normal. "Well see you later then!" He said and wave until he disappears to the crowded people. "I didn't know Charles is your friend." Maxine said while wiping the stain on her dress. "We talk! But we're not friends!" I said.

I was wondering where Max was.

"Justin!" I called Justin's name when I saw him dancing. He look at me and he wave. "Have you seen Max?" I ask him when he walk towards me. "What?" He said while drinking. "I said have you seen where Max was?!" I repeated. "Oh yeah! He was out!" I thank him and leave the two. I went out and see Max talking to a man who wear a black hoodie. I wait the man to leave before coming to Max.

"Max!" I shout his name when the man leaves. He looked surprise but he still walk towards me. "I've been looking for you!" I said and laugh. "I'm sorry, there's just an important thing with my family. By the way, why are you finding me?" He said. "Nothing, I thought you're not coming..." I said and smiled.

He look to his hand where he's holding a red envelope and give it to me. "There's a man earlier, and he said that this is for you." He said. I accept the envelope and put it inside my pocket.

"That is my girlfriend man!" We look to the side when there's a two man fighting. It caught a lot of attention. "Yeah, so what? I'm just talking to her dude." The other man said. "It is okay to talk with my girlfriend but don't touch her." The other guy said. Half of the students went out to see what's happening outside. "I can touch any girl out there if I wanted, even your girlfriend." The other guy said. He look like drunk.

Until he punched the drunk guy and make a fight. Now, all the students at the party is watching the fight. "Jack! Stop them!" Max said. I walk through the scene to stop the fight. The girlfriend trying to stop his boyfriend from punching the drunk guy.

"Hey both of you stop!" I shout. I stop the man who's punching the drunk guys face. Until one moment, the drunk guy punch my face, accidentally.

"Jack!!" My friends scream.

I was shock for a moment and faced the drunk guy. "You know what, you can be drunk anytime but don't make a scene! Specially touching a girl! Have a respect!" I shout that make the student support me.

"Well, you can be rich anytime and be famous like your uncle! But you will never had someone in your life! You will always be alone!" He said.

After saying that word to me...

Everything goes slowly and the sound of the people who are surrounding me, are fading.

I'm going to find my Parents, I'm not alone. I have friends. I have people who support me. This is not fair! I'm just trying to help! I'm just saying the good words. Why does he need to tell me that? I will find my parents!! I will find my past! My questions will be answered someday!! This isn't fair!  This is not fair!!

"Shut up!!" I scream and put my hands up direct to his direction. I felt an energy released to my hands, to my body specially to my head. The air blew slowly until the air released some energy from my hands direct to his direction.

And from that moment, that precious moment. I didn't stop myself. I didn't control myself.

The drunk guy flew away from me.

After he bumped into a tree. Everyone goes silent. I look around, and they are all looking at me, like I murdered someone. After a second, everyone scream, the others run and the others stay at their position.

Did I just...

Did I just showed them my secret? My secret that I've been hiding for 3 years now?

My telekinesis? Because if I did.

I mess up.
