Amelia “Guess what!” I yelled over the phone to my best friend, Somalia. I was lying in bed as we FaceTimed. Somalia and I have been best friends forever. She knows my parents, but she doesn’t know what my father does for a living. I mean, neither do I. I remember when my brother and I snuck into my dad’s office some time ago, and somehow I got grounded for a month, but my brother didn’t. “What?” She asked as she threw herself on her bed as well. My best friend is gorgeous. She has deep black hair and big almond brown eyes. Her parents are as strict as mine. That’s why they get along so well. “Yanex finally asked me to be his girlfriend!” I yelled at her all excitedly. She rolled her eyes at me and then slapped her forehead. “Amelia, you guys live in separate places in the world! You guys don’t even have the same time zone! How will you guys do this? What will your parents say?” Somalia continued to blabber on. Something that she does when she is nervous. “Will you relax?” I asked her, making her shake her head no. I laughed at her nonsense. “My parents will be sending me to New York with you for the whole summer break. I will spend some time with him there, and we will be coming back together.” I told her, making her open her mouth in shock. “Oh my God! You have lost it this time.” She told me as she shook her head, sitting down on the bed. “Okay, enough about Yanex and me. Have you decided on what you are wearing for graduation tomorrow?” I asked her. We are finally graduating from high school tomorrow, and we couldn’t be more excited. “Yes! I found this cute white short dress. It’s a halter that wraps around the back.” She said, somewhat describing the dress to me. “What are you wearing?” She asked me as she placed her hand under her chin. “I got this blush pink short dress. The whole top part of the dress is lace.” I told her as she smiled and nodded in agreement. I began to yawn, making her chuckle. “Go to bed, sleepyhead!” She said. I nodded. “Good Night! Love you!” I told her as I hung up on her. The whole night I tossed and turned, thanks to the nerves of the graduation. The following day, I was up before my alarm. I walked towards the ensuite bathroom, sitting on the toilet. Once I was done, I stood up, flushed, then walked to the sink to wash my hands, brush my teeth and brush the bird’s nest that my hair was. Graduation was at three pm, and my mission today was to annoy my brother and get ready for the graduation. I walked down to my brother’s room, barging in, and boy, was that a mistake! I caught him with his hands in the cookie jar! Pants down, cöck at full mast as he jerked himself off. “Ewwwww!” I yelled as I closed the door to his room and then went downstairs to the kitchen. “What is all the ruckus about?” My mother asked me as she saw me running into the kitchen. “I will barf if I have to repeat what I saw upstairs in Abelardos’s room.” I told my mother. I turned around to Nora, “Where is the bleach? I need to pour it over my eyes!” I told her, making her laugh. Nora is like our grandmother. She has been there for us every step of the way. “Mom! Can you tell this one that she needs to learn how to knock on the door!” My brother yelled, pointing at me as he walked into the kitchen. I looked at him, then faked gag. “Are either of you going to tell me what is going on?” My mother asked us as we yelled, “No!” in unison. “Okay, then leave the drama. Are you guys going to eat breakfast?” She asked us, both of us nodding our heads. “Then sit down.” She told us as she motioned to the stools by the counter. Abelardo pushed me as we walked toward the stools, making me hit my pinky toe on the corner of the island. “You fūcking ass!” I yelled at him as my mother turned around, glaring at me. “Sorry, but this big head pushed me!” I told her as I limped toward the chair, then brought my knee up to my chest to inspect my toe. “When will you two grow up?” She asked as she turned around to fill our plates. Once we finished breakfast, I walked back upstairs and then into my bedroom. I took a look at the time, noticing that I only had two hours before I needed to start getting ready for graduation. I got under my covers as I drifted into a nice nap, but thanks to the ringing of my phone, I only slept one hour. I took my hand out from under the cover and searched for my phone. Looking at the screen, I saw that it was Somalia. “You are lucky that I love you.” I told her as I answered the phone. “Why were you sleeping?” She asked as she got ready. “Because I couldn’t sleep well last night.” I told her as I turned around and then slipped out of bed. “Okay! Well, you need to get up! You are going to be late!” She yelled at me over the phone. “Okay, okay. I’m up, geez.” I replied as I shook my head and walked toward my bathroom. “I will see you at school!” She yelled over the phone as she hung up. I walked into the bathroom and switched the lights on. I began undressing and then walked right onto the walk-in shower. Once thoroughly showered, I wrapped myself in one of those plush white towels my mother put there. I walked out of the bathroom and then slipped on the dress. When I was slipping on my shoes, my mom walked in with tears streaming down her face. “Mom, I am just graduating from high school. I’m not moving out. Relax.” I said as I pulled her into a hug. “I know. I never thought that this day would come.” She said as she cleaned the tears that escaped with her finger. “You ready to go?” She asked me as I nodded, and we walked downstairs hand in hand. My father, my brother, Nora and Jacob were all waiting by the door. “Geez, you are all acting as if I was getting married. Why isn’t he getting all the attention?” I asked as I pointed at my brother. “Because he is a man. You are a woman. Next thing we know, you will come home with a boyfriend!” My mother said as my father glared at her. I laughed as I walked down the steps and into the SUV waiting for us. We all got into the SUV and headed to school for our graduation. ** Two weeks later “Hey, baby girl! Are you ready for your trip?” My mom asked me as she sat on the corner of my bed. I nodded my head and sat down next to her. She placed her hand on mine, gently rubbing it. “You know you better contact us every day. If not, your father will send a whole SWAT team to get you.” She said, making me laugh. “Oh, I know, he can be a bit extra.” I replied. That night I tossed and turned in bed. I was anxious about the trip. It was the first time that I had flown out without my parents. Technically, it is the first time I will be flying out alone, period. I woke up before my alarm rang, jumping into the shower quickly. Once out of the shower, I dressed in my skinny black jeans and a white t-shirt tucked in the front. I paired it with my oversized tan sweater and some white sneakers. I placed my hair in a ponytail and headed out of my room. I walked down the steps of the house to find my father standing right next to Jacob. Jacob has been a part of this family since my mother was pregnant with my brother and me. He is practically an uncle at this rate. “Good morning, Daddy. Good morning, Uncle Jacob.” I said to both, kissing them on the cheek. Jacob reached for my suitcase as I handed it to him before he left to take it to the SUV. “You ready, right?” My dad asked as he took me into a hug and kissed me on my forehead. “Yes, Dad. You are acting as if I were leaving forever. I will be gone for two months, and if I miss you guys, I will come right back.” I told him, trying to reassure him. “You know I have always kept you away from my lifestyle, but you also know how to fend for yourself. I am confident that you took your firearm with you?” He asked me as he held me by my shoulders. I shook my head at his comment. “Yes, I am locked and loaded.” I replied, making him laugh.
