Xander’s POV
“What do you mean there is no trace of her?” I shouted at Jake in my office as he had just delivered the news that Lee the security guard had disappeared into thin air.
Jake had managed to bring Eva the day after the event even though she wasn’t happy about it, but I figured Lee would follow her seeing as how they were supposed to be so close. Dad returned as well and informed us that the Marlette security company had returned to Paris, but Lee did not go with them, but no one knew where she went, with whom or how she was traveling. It was a little under three weeks until the wedding and I really didn’t need the headache of some stranger running loose out there. She could attack us at any given time, and anyone could get hurt, including my fiancé.
“Exactly what I said, no trace. The trackers came back empty handed. But on the upside, we did confirm that Dylan was with Lumen and Claire. He hasn’t returned back to his pack either, but we will be alerted as soon as he has.”
I slammed my fist on my desk, my patience was beginning to run thin, and I could feel that anger building like a volcano, “Go on get out of here. And I don’t want to see you again until you have some good news for me.”
I watched as he stormed out of my office and slammed the door behind him. I loved Jake like a brother, he had always been the only person I could trust whole heartedly my whole life and always had my back. Nothing ever came between us, but I was quickly starting to feel like this security guard was wedging her way there.
I grabbed the envelope up that had been delivered earlier in the morning by one of the PI’s I used from time to time and pulled the contents out. If no one else was going to get down to the bottom of who the girl was, I would do it myself.
Flipping through the pages one by one, a person would think that she was just exactly who everyone thought she was, but all I could see was gaps in her life. Gaps that either meant I had a crappy PI, or gaps that meant someone was hiding something. There were no birth records for the girl, the only family history said that she was a Marlette. Her school transcripts looked legit right up to her graduating college with a business major. There were no pictures or friend connections older than six years. The documents showed where she worked for two different companies and had just recently taken on the security guard detail, but there was no record as to how she trained for the position.
A thought crossed my mind as I placed the documents back in the envelope and locked them in my desk. What if she was a hunter? They were human, well trained, strong, skilled, and would hide behind a false identity, many actually. That was the only explanation I could come up with as to why I felt suspicious about the girl, and why she could be so strong and skilled. The only thing that didn’t make sense was her training, I had never come across a hunter that skilled, so where did she learn.
Deciding there was only one thing left to do I picked the phone up and called the number to Marlette Security Company that dad gave me. He had spoken to the owner Scott and smoothed things over about the raid, them being a part of our world understood the circumstances as to why we did it. He had even agreed to offer assistance and promised he would no longer work with the Lumen. While listening to the phone ring I couldn’t help but wonder if she was a hunter, why was she living in their world for so long and not making a move, I mean her records said she was a Marlette, and they were of our world with royal bloodlines, so why was she a human living in that world?
I shook the thoughts from my head, there was a lot that wasn’t making sense and I needed to know. “Hello Marlette Security Consulting and Training.” The deep voice rang out through the line.
“Hello, this is Xander, I am calling to speak with Scott.”
“Speaking, how can I help you?”
“Do you have time to speak?”
“I do, we just finished a training session, so I only have about ten minutes.”
“Perfect.”
The conversation continued as I asked my questions and he answered. Listening to him I could hear what he was saying but it all sounded scripted and matched up to the details I was given in the documents. There was no funny stories or little descriptions about her being a person, nothing telling me that he had known her, her whole life. The red flag went up even higher though when I asked about her training, his reply was he trained her, but he seemed to quickly forget that I had faced his brother and him both, and her. That was enough to tell me that there was more to her than anyone was telling me, or that anyone knew. I decided to not push him anymore and share my suspicions and I invited him to the wedding.
I started to hang the phone up and he cleared his throat causing me to listen a bit longer, “Xander, take care of her. You have no idea how special she truly is.” And with that he hung the phone up, leaving me staring at it like a wild beast. What did he mean take care of her?
I laid the phone down and knew what I had to do, I had to talk to Eva. She had been there, she had met the girl, infiltrated her life and from my understanding had become quite close to her. Maybe she knew things that would help me in finding the girl or learning more about her.
I dialed dad’s number and told him to get mom and Eva together, I would be there in the evening. I had questions and they were going to answer, there would be no negotiating.
