Chapter 1

(more than 17 years later)

Zane's POV

Let your soul be dark as night, Let your heart hold no light because you are a son of darkness, let the darkness lead your path

Just as your shadow follows you everywhere, so would the darkness be

it would deliver your enemies into hands, and nothing would ever harm you as long as the darkness is close," The priestess proclaimed as she anointed me

I was kneeling naked at the altar of the dark priestess, being purified for an assignment, this was a normal occurrence for me

it's been most than 17 years working for my father, doing his dirty deals, killing those who went against him and the cartel

I successfully ran the Italians out of town during my first year been back and that automatically gave me the respect I needed in this criminal world

I became the most feared hitman around, and everyone quivered at the mention of my name, I even had the whole city eating out of my palms

I was nicknamed Shadow because I only moved at the den of night and every kill I made was quick and easy and none of my victims saw it coming

But this new assignment was like none I have ever embarked on, so I needed all the help I could get

“Where is the sacrifice I requested," the priestess asked and I nodded, clapping my hands signalling for the animal to be brought to her

Seeing the aged ram, the priestess smiled looking up at me

“You did well Shadow, now I can complete the ritual," she smirked

Chanting and singing, the priest slits the throat of the ram draining out its blood

“A Blood you offered, A Blood you shall take, and so as I bath you in this blood, so shall you bath in the blood of the one that had caused you so much pain," She said bathing me with the blood of ram as she continued chanting

“A Blood for a blood"

It's done Shadow... it is done, now rise to your feet and go and inflict pain on the one that had caused you the pain I can see in your heart

Go and may the darkness lead your path to victory," she said smiling

Nodding my head, I stood up and got dressed

it was time, time to put an end to his reign, time to get my revenge on the one that offered me back to this dark life

It was time to kill my father, and take my rightful place as the leader of the cartel

I know you may ask why, why now... why decide to kill him after dedicating more than 17 years of your life to him and his cartel

The answer is simple he took my light away from me, and feed me back into the darkness

So I'm going to take away the only thing he cherishes so damn much

“Shadow, where the hell has you been, you have been looking everywhere you for, you have been MIA for the whole day. There is big trouble at the warehouse, the Böse are at it again and your father insisted that you handle it, "I heard Bruno say immediately as I got into the house but I didn't pay him any attention.

“Shadow, aren't you listening to me," Bruno shouted as ran after me but I continued to ignore him as I picked up my pace.

Bruno has been my right-hand man and closest friend ever since I got here, even though he was much younger than I am, he was there for me and I wouldn't have survived or remained sane here if not for him.

”Zane..." He shouted, as I stopped and smiled turning to look at him.

''Didn't I tell you, that when it's just the two of us, I'm not Shadow but Zane," I let out smiling at him.

“So that was why you didn't respond," he asks as he rolled his eyes.

'' You didn't call me properly, so why should I answer," I laughed.

'' You know that is next s**t crazy right," Bruno said hitting me playfully.

“So tell me where have you been, you have been out all day," Bruno asked.

“I was with Aaliyah," I said but Bruno looked at me with a curious and questioning look on his face and I knew immediately what he was thinking about.

“No, get your mind out of the gutters... I just went for a purification," I said immediately with a convincing look on my face.

“Purification?" Bruno asked with confusion evident in his voice.

“Do you have any special assignment to carry out, I'm sure the Böse are not a serious threat to warrant a purification," Bruno lets out.

''I can definitely handle the German cartel, but this new assignment is a much bigger threat to me. A threat I must deal with unless it would consume me," I said.

'' Zane, I'm confused so tell me who is this assignment you are so desperate to carry out," Bruno asked.

''Very Soon, my dear friend, it would be clear to you all, Now tell me where my father is," I said.

''He went on a short trip but would be back by tomorrow evening," Bruno answered.

'' Okay then," I said as I took in a deep breath.

'I waited for more than 17years for this, I could definitely wait a bit longer," I said to myself.

I was about to walk up to my room when Bruno stopped me again

''Zane... What about the Böse, aren't you going to handle them," he asked.

''No Bruno I am not going to, I'm just going to go up to my room and relax, I'm sure you can handle them on your own," I smiled walking away.

I could hear Bruno grumble, but I ignored him chuckling under my breath

I stayed in my room for the rest of the day, I didn't eat or sleep.

I didn't even visit my clubs like I always do every night, because what I was about to do required the uttermost concentration, and being distracted was not an option right now.

it was an option that would only get me killed, and I wasn't planning on dying at the hands of my father. Rather it would be the other way around.

I continued my isolation alone in my room until the day broke and the sunset came again.

I soon heard his car pull into the driveway and that was when I knew it was time.

Strapping up for war, I made my way to the study as I knew that was the first place he did enter.

it was late so his guards wouldn't be with him. So I sat still and waited for my prey.

Kay soon walked in I heard him say.

“Son... what a surprise I thought you would be out at one of your clubs," he said as he walked over to his seat

No, I stayed back because we have a lot to clear up father..." I said smirking as I walked up to the door locking it

“What is so important that you have to lock the door," Kay ask as he pours himself a glass of whiskey

A lot Kay, quite a lot..." I whispered bringing out my gun as I pointed it directly at him

“Son what do you think you are trying to do," Kay asked nonchalantly as he sipped on his drink

I am here to do something I should have done a long time ago," I said moving closer to him but Kay laughed even harder as if my words were amusing him

What would you have done a long time ago, kill me?' he laughed

You were too weak then and you are still weak now, I f*****g made you, who you are right now

The shadow everyone fears and respect, the dreaded monster on the streets that no one dares to challenge, I created him, so don't you dare stand there and talk to me like that

“I f*****g made you," Kay shouted

“I never wanted any of this, for f**k sake you took my light away from me, you forced me to dedicate myself to the darkness

And it wasn't that hard you know, because I left my heart back there with her, so it made it easier not to feel anything with every life I took

“You were right when you said, you made me into what I am right now

So, let me tell you if don't know father, you created a monster and that monster that you created would be your end," I said croaking the gun

But still, Kay was unmoved, my words and the gun pointed towards him did nothing to frighten him, he just laughed as he continued to sip on his drink

“ We both know, You don't have it in you to kill me, Son, so just put down the gun," He laughed

Even as the great Shadow that you are, you are still so weak, come on shoot me if you have it in you," Kay dared me as he even mocked me with his words

Smirking I knew what I had to do

“Goodbye Father," I smirked shooting him straight in the head

the surprised look in his eyes was all the satisfaction I needed as he fell to the floor

All of a sudden the door burst up and Bruno ran in

Seeing the scene before him, Bruno froze as he looked at me in shock

“Was this your big assignment," Bruno asked confused

Call a general meeting, We need to announce the death of my father and a handover ceremony needs to be done, no question asked okay," I said and Bruno nodded immediately

it was finally time to take my place on the throne as the real head of this cartel.
