A bright sunny day in a city. A good day to work. Mori a veterinarian, who’s walking towards his clinic with a smile on his face grab a coffee on his favorite café.
As he went on his way, he saw a huge golden retriever with its hair shone as the light hit it. Its tail is excitedly wagging as it looks up to him.
He stopped from his tracks and pet its head, rubbing the ears which the dog clearly enjoyed. When he tries to continue his walk, the retriever bit his trouser with its tail still wagging.
He can’t help but let out a small laugh which gained the attention of the owner of the dog. “Oh dear! I’m so sorry about that, that’s him being friendly.” A tall and well-toned man said.
“No, it’s alright. To be honest, it’s cute.” He bestowed him a smile which made the other man blush.
But Mori didn’t notice it because of the dog that’s begging him to pet it. The handsome man fakes cough and introduce himself, “I’m Chris, Chris Morrow.”
Chris extended his hand in an attempt to shake Mori’s. “It’s Mori, Mori Heather.” The veterinarian answered with a soft smile.
“So, where you from here?” Chris rub the back of his neck bashfully as he tried to converse with Mori.
But Mori happened to look at his wristwatch and saw the time, “Oh my! I would love to talk to you more, but I have to go to my work. I have an appointment with a golden retriever just like this cute buddy.” He kneeled and pet the dog.
“Appointment? I have an appointment too. Are you perhaps the veterinarian that works here?” Chris asked.
Mori looks up and stood, “Yes, I am.” He answered softly.
“Then great! Let’s walk together to your clinic.” He beamed and removed his sunglasses revealing his sapphire eyes.
Mori was mesmerized by the sight. Straightly looking at his beautiful eyes. The man shook his hand in front of Mori to gain his attention.
“Y-yes, I’m sorry. What was that?” Mori asked with apologetic smile.
Chris only chuckles at his cute behavior. “I said, let’s walk together to your clinic.”
The two walked side by side with the playful dog occasionally jumping. “What a coincidence. It must be fate that we meet each other.” Chris started the conversation.
“Yeah, it must be.” Mori simply replied with unwavering smile on his face. Which resulted to the man to grinned from ear to ear.
As Mori opened the door of his clinic, the cheerful dog suddenly runs inside. “I’m really sorry about that. Sometime he’s so energetic and acts on his own, forgetting who’s the boss.”
His statement made Mori laugh. “It’s good that he’s that energetic.” But his smile quickly faded.
“If she’s this energetic, why did you bring her here?” Mori asked the man confused.
“His name is Ben, I was…” Chris was cut off when Mori didn’t realize that the dog is indeed a boy.
“Oh! I’m sorry, I didn’t realize sooner.” He gasped and cupped his mouth apologizing from his mistake.
The tall male chuckles at his reaction, “don’t sweat it. I get that a lot.”
“So, what’s wrong with you little buddy?” Mori cupped the head of Ben while rubbing his ears.
Chris is slightly blushing from the sight of Mori cutely talking to Ben. But he quickly regained his composure. “I think he’s deaf. But I don’t know, that’s why I brought him here.”
Mori’s eyes widen at Chris’s statement. This cute little being, sent from above doesn’t hear anything.
His heart clenched at the thought of this angel being with someone who doesn’t love him the way this man does.
“What makes you think like that?” he asked Chris with his gentle voice.
Chris put his forefinger and thumb on his chin, thinking of the times he concluded that Ben is deaf. “When he’s just a puppy, every time I call him, he doesn’t respond to my voice.”
“I thought he’s just too young for him to be able to understand. But months have passed and he don’t recognize my voice and sometimes I have to pet him to wake him up.”
The man told Mori what he has experience from all the time he’s with Ben. Which Mori nodded as he listened carefully.
“Is that so? If you please, put him on the table and let’s see what I can do.” Mori said and put on his mask and gloves.
“Okay Ben, let’s hop on!” Chris playfully said to Ben and lift him up on the table.
Mori readied his tools to examine Ben’s ears. But the furry baby is too energetic, wagging his tail and turning his head around.
Making the job harder which Mori only laughed off. “Ben, please stay still.” Chris said to Ben, which the dog doesn’t obey.
It’s getting harder for them to keep the happy dog to stay still. So, Chris glared at the dog making it whimper at the sight of his eyes.
And this time, Mori easily looked inside the dog’s ear and did some examinations. After the tests Mori told Chris that Ben is indeed deaf.
Chris only sighed and rub Ben’s ears as he apologized for glaring at him earlier. Ben’s tail immediately wagged his tail at the touch, to show that he’s already forgiven.
“Just like what I’ve thought.” Chris put his head against the head of Ben dramatically. “It’s so sad to know that my baby can’t hear the sound of my beautiful voice when I sing.”
His last words make Mori laugh aloud with tears prickling on his eyes. His laughing form was angelic at the sight of Chris.
“I… hahaha… I didn’t expect that I’m sorry.” Mori said in between laughs while rubbing the tears on his eyes.
“But you know, I think he’s been thankful to have someone like you to brighten his world.” Mori smiled at him.
Chris’s cheeks are burning red, even his ears. ‘Cute!’ He internally screamed.
He rubbed the back of his neck and bashfully looked away, “T-there’s a newly open café nearby, a-are you free this Saturday?” He tried to ask him out but can’t look directly on his eyes.
Mori’s wide eye looked at him, like he grew a second head. But nonetheless smiled and said, “I would love to.”
Chris grew a curly smile as if he’s a child who’s been given a candy on a Halloween night. He can’t wait to see Mori on their date.
“W-well then, see you at Patisierre 10 o’clock in the morning?” Chris stuttered while walking backwards.
Mori chortle at his reaction, “Saturday 10 o’clock. Sounds good.”
“Great! See ya!” Chris beamed while still walking backwards, resulting to him bumping on the door when he faces front.
Mori grimace at the sound of impact. It must have been hurt. Chris is finally out of his sight when he saw Ben is still in the clinic.
He hurriedly grabbed Ben’s collar opened the door. “Chris!” He shouted, which instantly gained the tall man’s attention.
Chris immediately saw Mori holding Ben. And before he could even say anything Ben run towards him.
His blush is noticeable even such distance. And the two went away with a wave to Mori.
Mori went to his apartment with a smile on his lips. He plopped down the bed and opened his phone to look for any message.
“Huh? A message from aunt Isabell? That’s very rare.” He said as he saw a message from his aunt.
‘Mori, grandma Sapphire has died from heart failure. And I know, it’s hard for you since she’s so close in your heart. But we need you to manage her coconut farm. She said before she died that you will inherit her farm.’
Mori didn’t have the chance to read the rest of the message because he’s been heaving from the moment he read the death of her beloved grandmother. His hand is grabbing the shirt on his chest.
Clenching it as if it will help him ease the pain he’s feeling. After a tear roll down from his eyes, his bawls echoed through the closed walls of his apartment.
“Why?! Why now?! Why did you leave me soon! You said we’ll… together…” Mori clutch the sheets of his bed, throwing punches on his bed.
Asking himself why did this happened, as he spoke between heavy sobs. After he cried all the tears he has, he felt empty. So empty.
He lied on his bed with his arms wide spread. He looked at the ceiling as he reminisces the moments he shared with his grandmother.
‘I don’t have wounds, but why does it hurt so bad?’ He asked to himself weakly.
His half lidded swollen eyes felt so heavy yet it won’t close. His whole body is aching for a glass of water yet he can’t move.
He felt so empty and heavy at the same time. ‘I didn’t know that emptiness would weigh this heavy.’ He chuckled at his own thought before letting the last drop of his tears falls.
