Lizzy Three months of Connor beating me and then apologizing and being sweet and promising he wouldn’t do it again. All of that time, I didn’t have my phone. I couldn’t believe my family hadn’t shown up at my doorstep wondering why I wasn’t returning phone calls. Were they not worried about me? I couldn’t believe my mom alone would be okay with me not talking to her. I used to talk to her at least once a week. And here it had been three months. I was alone. Or so I thought. Connor said I was. He said they didn’t love me anymore. He said he was the only one that loved me. And I was starting to believe it. I was beginning to believe everything he said, actually. I was worthless, I wouldn’t ever make it as a surgeon, and I should give up. He was the only one that cared about me, the only one that ever would. My grades had even started to slip. I had been a straight-A student, and I was now just barely passing my classes. My teachers were even beginning to ask if this was the right choice for me. And I started to question that myself.  My luck, however, seemed to change after three long months. Connor was at work. It was yet another of his long days. And I hoped he would be in a good mood tonight. His favorite basketball team won their game today, and I made his favorite dinner and would have it ready when he got home. I was even working on laundry and would have it all folded and put away by the time he got home. He usually put his own clothes away, but I hoped to surprise him by doing it all myself. Opening one of his drawers, I instantly understood why he always did it himself. Why he would grab the clothes from me and put them away and not let me near his drawers. My phone was there. It was fully charged, and the sound was off. Looking through the messages that had been sent, I was shocked. He must have been replying to my family. They all thought I was so busy with school I didn’t have time to talk on the phone. And from the looks of it, my parents were getting concerned. I wanted to call them right then and tell them what had been going on, but Connor would be home soon. I tucked the phone back into the drawer, putting his clothes away and getting back out to the kitchen to finish dinner. If I were lucky, he wouldn’t move it, and I could grab it later and call for help.  As Connor walked in the door, my hope of him being in a good mood was dashed, though. All it took was one look, and I knew he was in a bad mood. I had to be careful. But that was easier said than done when he was like this. I set his dinner on the table, then headed back into the kitchen and grabbed him something to drink. That's all it took. He was right behind me. His hand holding a fist full of my hair. “What are you doing?” I stammered slightly, “Getting...you...something..to...drink.” Shoving me against the fridge, his free fist hitting my side just above my kidney. I couldn’t help but cry out from the pain. “My drink and food should have been on the table before I walked in the door, you worthless bitch.” His fist flew into my side again and again, and even though he had me pinned to the fridge, it wasn’t enough to hold me up on my feet. I fell to the floor, trying to protect myself from his blows. But the moment I was on the floor, he started using his booted foot. Kicking me wherever his foot landed. This time, unlike any other time, he kept going until I passed out.  I don’t know how long I was out. However long it was, it was enough time for him to finish eating the food I put out for him. When I started to sit up, he stood from his seat, coming over to me and grabbing me. His hand on my face like he likes to do, forcing me to look at him. “Now clean up your f*****g mess, you stupid bitch.” Letting go of my face, he shoved my head back, making me hit it on one of the cabinet handles. Standing back up, he went into the bedroom, leaving me to clean up the dishes. And from the looks of it, the six beer bottles he had emptied while I was passed out. Taking my time, I cleaned everything up. By the time I was done, I could hear him already sound asleep in the bedroom. As carefully as I could, I snuck into the room and retrieved my phone. Then just as carefully and quietly, I snuck back out of the bedroom. Slipping on a pair of shoes, I snuck out of the apartment and ran.  I ran as fast as I could down the street until I found the first open store there was. It was a small convenience store with a little old man behind the counter. Walking in, I looked around and found he was the only one in the store. “Do you have a restroom?” He nodded and pointed to the back wall. I nodded and walked back there. I knew he was watching me the whole time. I could feel his eyes on the back of my head. Ducking into the bathroom, I locked the door, pulled my phone out of my pocket, and called the first number on my contacts list, Alex. It was late, and I wasn’t sure if he would be up, but he answered on the second ring. “Lizzy?” He sounded groggy. I woke him up. “Alex, I need help.” I couldn’t help it, but I started to cry as I fell to the floor of the bathroom. The floor was dirty, but I didn’t care. “Lizzy, where are you? What happened?” I had to take a breath so I could answer him. I had to calm myself down. “Alex, I messed up. I can’t go back to my apartment. I need someone to come to get me.” I cried harder. I knew I was going to have to tell him. I was going to have to tell my dad I let a guy beat me. I let him convince me no one else cared about me. I should have known he was lying. My family would never leave me. “Lizzy, take a breath. Where are you?” I cried harder. I didn’t know. “A convenience store a few blocks from my apartment. I don’t know.” I could hear him moving around now. I even heard Clara’s voice in the background a few times. “Lizzy, I need you to turn back on the GPS on your phone.” Sobbing, I pulled the phone away from my ear and did as he told me to. Before I could put the phone back to my ear, a knock on the door made me jump, making me drop my phone. “Ma’am, are you alright in there?” It was the old man. I sighed slightly in relief. “Yeah, I’m fine.” Grabbing my phone, I put it back to my ear. “Alex, please hurry.” There was a short silence, but I knew he was still there. I could hear him talking to someone. “Alright, Lizzy. One of the guys from The Spiked Eagles MC is on his way. His name is Ink. He will take you somewhere until we get there.” I nodded as another sob came out of me. But then I remembered he couldn’t see me. “Okay.” While I waited, Alex stayed on the line with me. He stopped asking what happened for now. But I was sure he would go back to asking when he got here. As we talked, I heard Clara talking to Jax in the background. And I was sure Alex had called Jax. He was like another brother to me. He was one of Alex’s best friends growing up. And I always knew if I couldn’t find my brother, I could go to Jax or even Dominic, Jax’s younger brother.
