None of them talked about what had gone down in the woods, only that Ryan had been startled by a deer, and he’d fallen. Ryan flushed while they told their false story.
Susan’s spirits improved at that news. Sure, she’d been scared, but it had turned out to be nothing, had in fact been a bit of an adventure. The four of them assured her there was nothing much interesting beyond the lake, nothing she’d need a guide for, and that pleased her even more.
The rest of the Hacks arrived over the next few hours, and all seemed in good enough shape, despite the fact that a sullen Yohan had dropped them off. It looked like Susan’s talk had worked, at least for the time being.
