Chapter 7 Andriy Plaviuk crept from the inn and hurried down the moonlit road heading away from the dig site. When he reached a footpath scarcely visible from the road, he turned onto it. He trudged along as quickly as he dared, his flashlight showing the way. Night in these lonely mountains scared him. But night was the only time she allowed him to see her. After a quarter mile he reached an old cottage. He paused to catch his breath, his heart pounding. He could scarcely believe how friendly she always acted toward him. No one else even liked him. Throughout school and at the university, he was either ignored or treated like a pariah which always put him on the defensive and ready to verbally attack anyone who gave him a look he didn’t like. Which was fairly often. Everything about
