4. Crash Back to Earth

"Kayleigh Murray" The way he said the name made her feel like it belonged to someone else. Someone he knew intimately. "What am I doing here? No, where is here?" Kayleigh asked, ignoring the small happiness blooming in her chest at seeing him "My house." Yes, that made perfect sense. She thought to herself with an inward eye roll. "What am I doing in your house, Mr. Wesley." She asked "You can just call me Sky." "Why should I?" She frowned in question. Surely it was rude to call your boss’ boss’ boss by his first name. "Why not?" He asked back, folding his arm over his chest. She did not indulge in gawking at his biceps even though it looked so sexy under his black tee. "I was reliably informed by my superiors who have made that mistake to never refer to you by your first name and now you are asking me to do just that? Seems suspicious, don't you think?" "If you listen for a moment, you'll know why." He muttered. "Look", she sighed "I don't know how I got here or why I'm here. But if you saved me, thank you and if it's any other thing, then whatever, but I really have to go home." She stated, heading towards the door. Sky watched her with folded arms and an amused look totally in awe. The fact that she didn't even know where she was and she was walking out made him wait patiently for her realization. Kayleigh opened the door and just as she took a step outside, she realized she had no idea where she was and, worse still, something about the place was giving off all the wrong auras. She turned to Sky. "Could you tell me where I am?" "Nowhere you'll be able to get away from without help." “And are you going to help me?” She asked and by his look she already knew the answer. "Look, Mr. Wesley, I really, really, really need to go home. For one, I'm starting to stink and, second, unlike you, I live with my mother and she'll skin me alive if I don't go back soon. So, tell me where I am." "First of all, you have to listen to me." “And then you’ll let me go?” She asked and he quirked his head to one side, waiting. "Fine, I'm all ears." "Sit." He ordered, pointing to a seat. "Excuse me?" She frowned. "Just because you are my boss doesn't mean you can order me around anytime you like. I'm not at work right now." "Says the girl who calls me Mr. Wesley." He was a little annoyed. She was so damn stubborn. "Say what you want. Your attitude is starting to bug me." She stated in the rudest voice she could muster and Sky had to breathe deeply to keep his anger in check. "Ok. Have you ever heard of werewolves? Do you believe they exist?" He asked and she looked at him like he was crazy. "What?!" She started to feel light headed and wished she had taken him up on his offer of a seat. "Of course you think I'm crazy. If you didn't, then........" "Just tell me." She almost begged. The bad feeling was back full force and it was threatening to consume her. "There is no easy way to say this, so I'll say this straight out. Werewolves are shape-shifters. When they are born, the moon goddess gifts them mates and you're mine." He said calmly, slowly, trying to judge her reaction mainly because he couldn't find any other way to put it and, in his experience, things are better said straight out. But, what had him raising his brows was when Kayleigh spoke again. "That's why your aura is so whack." She exclaimed, sounding like she succeeded in solving the most puzzling case. "What are you talking about?" "The fact that you're a werewolf. It makes perfect sense. You definitely weren't giving off a human aura." "And you know this how?" He asked, but just as she was about to answer, she paused and her amusement fled. “What do you mean I am your mate?” She had heard him wrong. She had definitely heard him wrong. There was no way she hadn’t. How did you know I was not human?” He asked back and, because she was eager to get the mate issue sorted, she replied. "Just the same way I know we are not anywhere near the rest of the world." "Who are you?" He asked, narrowing his eyes at her. "Kayleigh Delia Murray, as you already know. Now what do you mean I am your mate?" She shrugged and he shook his head, then folded his arms, then leaned on the fireplace and studied her carefully. Chestnut brown hair, blue-grey eyes, button nose, wide lips. She was beautiful. Not the Cinderella type of beautiful. 'The drop-dead gorgeous take me to bed' kind of beautiful. And although she was lean, her curves were outlined perfectly with the black skinny jeans and purple tank top she wore to work the previous day. Only then, it had been covered by a jacket. "If you don't stop staring at me like that, I'm going to punch you so hard your semi-immortal teeth will rattle if not fall off." She warned him and he smirked at her in amusement. "You know you'd probably be down before your fists came near me." He straightened from his position and on a more serious note added, "What are you?" "What does it say about you that you claim I'm your mate but you don't even know what I am?" She asked, irritated as she even said the word. "I'm not having this dilly-dally conversation with you." "Good. Because I'm ready to go home. So, tell me how to get to the real world." "I'm sorry Kayleigh. I really am, but I cannot let you leave." "Fine. Then I will let myself leave." She frowned "I'm finding my way home with or without your help and you could as well go find yourself a new...mate, because, frankly, I don't want any of that bullshit.” She spat out, going towards the door and this time he caught hold of her elbow. "Listen, Kayleigh, and listen well. There is not a…." "Let go of me." She warned through gritted teeth. "No." He answered, meeting her stubborn gaze with the fire of his. "This will be the last time I'll tell you. Let go of me." Her teeth were clenched and when he looked in her eyes, it seemed more purple than grey or even blue. "You have to let me explain that…" Before he completed his sentence there was a sharp pain to his head. The pain wasn't foreign. It was one that had been used on him several times. One that he had learnt to block. One that came so suddenly, he stumbled back a full three steps before he regained his composure and was able to block out the spell Kayleigh was using on him. When he looked up, both his and Kayleigh's eyes were wide in shock. "You're a witch." He was the first to speak. "Hybrid." She muttered, looking a whole lot more shocked than him and stumbled back in an attempt to get away from him but tripped on her feet. Sky came out of his shock immediately. "Are you okay?" He asked, extending a hand. "Stay the hell away from me." She shouted as she picked herself up from the floor. "Well, aren't you a ball of sunshine? See, I expected this sort of reaction when I told you I was a werewolf, but then, you were so cool about it. What changed?" "You're half vampire." She was still shell-shocked. She had never met a vampire before. And from the stories she had heard, it was a good thing. "Wow, you solved the world's greatest mystery. Why not go to the CIA and tell them what you found?" he said sarcastically. "Don't you fool around with me." She warned. "Look, I didn't choose to be half vamp and I certainly didn't choose you as my mate. But we can't always get what we want. And I can't let you go for three reasons. One, you're mine and I hate sharing. Two, you are in danger and I don't want you to get hurt. Three, there's no way I'm letting you go away from me when you can just vanish into your witchy world. So, even though you don't want to, you are going to have to stay right here where I can protect you." "I will not stay and you can't force me to. I'm leaving right now and I'm never coming back." She said, ignoring the low growl that emanated from his throat at the threat. As if to stamp her decision, she turned on her heels and started out the door. She yelped, then screamed, then yelped again. "Are you insane?" She asked, hitting Sky's back viciously. He threw her on his shoulders! He threw the unbeatable Kayleigh Murray over his shoulders!! He threw Valhalla's best female fighter over his shoulders!!! Kayleigh could feel the blood rushing to her head just as it started to boil. She was going to rip Skyler Wesley apart ling from limb. Boss or not. Hybrid or not. With the resolution, she drew up her knees and kicked him, hitting him hard on his muscled stomach.
