Harriet's POV
This house was massive!
After the driver who had introduced himself as Marcus had quickly taken me to eat in a grand restaurant. Something out of a movie.
In all my 21 years of living even before the vampires invasion, I had never gotten into a restaurant as grand as that.
It was obvious that the place was only used by vampires. They had all been dressed in tailored suit, well ironed and shiny, the ladies wore beautiful ball gowns and had perfect makeup on their faces. They looked perfect. Once Marcus and I entered, the eyes of everyone turned to us, to me especially.
I could feel there judgemental eyes, eyeing me, just in my white gown that had seen better days and the loafers which was the only reasonable shoe I owned, I was looking like a beggar compared to them.
But Marcus was nice enough to shield me from their prying eyes, he simply dragged me and used his suit jacket to hide my face from them.
When I had asked him why? He simply said.
"I'm only following orders"
We didn't stay long, simply ordering some food and then we were on our way. He ordered a lot of food and when I had asked if he was going to join me, he simply said,
"I don't eat on duty" I narrowed my eyes to him but he paid me no mind and turned back to driving.
It was safe to say I ate to my satisfaction, for the first time in three years, I didn't have to give my food out, I ate until I couldn't eat anymore.
However, I felt bad, the food and all the snacks had remained quite a lot, I wished there was a way to send them down to my brother Harvey. It simply made my hatred for these Vampires grow. They had the money to eat in fancy restaurant and even ride fancy cars and own fancy clothes, but we were left with nothing. They had taken everything that belonged to us and were living big, while we were living from hand to mouth.
I had tried to make conversation with Marcus but I was simply talking to myself, he only gave me a bored look each time I asked a question. I huffed, getting bored myself and then I slept.
___
Now standing before me was the biggest house I had ever seen. It was grand, a castle like building and it looked beautiful, something out of a fairy tale. I didn't know when I let out a loud gasp, my whole body bubbling in excitement.
I could feel Marcus eyes on me but I didn't pay him any mind.
Was this where I'd be living?
How many people stayed in this house?
I glanced around the compound, and another castle could be built on the space.
There were flowers grown in a very nice fashion, they looked well trimmed and well attended to.
There was a little white gate on the far end of the house and over it I could sight very tall trees and beautiful flowers that you would only find in movies. I took a quick guess and soon took that for the garden. There was a big garage that housed all sorts of expensive vehicles, I used vehicles because it wasn't only cars that were packed there. there was a power bike too.
If the outside looked like this, I wondered how the inside would look like.
I whispered to Marcus standing stiff my side, my eyes not straying away from the mansion before me.
"Who owns this place?"
Marcus let out a resigned sigh, I guess he was tired of me.
"This is where you'd be staying with the Lord" he growled mechanically.
I whisked my head to him.
"The Lord?" My heart dropped.
Marcus didn't answer me before the doors to the house was opened, a pretty girl who looked quite around my age strolled out, a beautiful smile on her face. She walked, bowed down to me and stood on one side.
I didn't even finish letting out my confusion before another younger guy strolled in. He was handsome but was more on the shorter side. He also bowed and stood beside the girl, a soft smile pulling on their lips.
I glanced at Marcus, my face puzzled but he wasn't even staring at me.
Another noise was heard and in came in an older man, dressed in well tailored suit, in similar fashion to the one Marcus was wearing. He also had a soft smile on his face.
By now, I had a million and one questions to answer but i was too shocked to open my mouth. The old man as I expected stood beside the two younger persons, their hands crossed together in their front.
Their eyes were drawn down, their heads bowed and they weren't moving or saying anything.
Another scuffle was heard and out came in an older woman, the oldest of them all. She looked well dressed as compared to the rest of them, her gray hair was tied in a neat bun on her head, accentuating her frail features. She was old but I could tell she was beautiful in her youth. She had a smile thrown to me but she was the only one that didn't bow.
With her stick in front of her, she walked to stand before me. I took steps back unconsciously and she smiled.
"Welcome to the Lord's house"
Lord's house? I almost wanted to laugh. What is this? A church?
"I am Ms Patricia. This is Penelope -" she pointed to the young beautiful girl who raised her head at the mention of her name, she smiled at me again. "- she will be in charge of all your needs. Whatever problems you have will be directed to her. This-" she pointed to the younger man beside Penelope, he like Penelope raised his head and smiled to me. "- is James. He is the cleaner. He also will be available for all your needs. This is Jonah the gardener-" she was referring to the older man now, he smiled warmly at me, subtlely reminding me of my father at home. "- you have met Marcus the driver. I am in charge of the kitchen and this whole household. Anything you need would have to pass through me first. You will meet the other workers as the days go by. Now do you have any questions?" Ms Patricia asked sternly.
I wondered how someone this old was still walking for some younger man.
Wait were they all Vampires?
Could I ask that maybe? I wondered.
However with the look Ms Patricia was giving me, I didn't think that was the kind of question I was allowed to ask. I simply shook my head letting her know I didn't have any questions.
Ms Patricia nodded, seemingly pleased with my answer.
"Now Penelope will take you to your room and prepare you for the Lord's visit" Ms Patricia didn't wait for me to ask her any questions before she strolled into the house, her stick being her major strength.
Penelope walked closer to me and bowed again. "After you my lady"
My lady? My brows knitted together in confusion but I simply said nothing and walked in front of her. I glanced briefly at Marcus who was still standing stiff and proper, his eyes following me but soon diverting his gaze when I reached out to him for help.
Fucking traitor.
Nothing would have prepared me for what I saw as we stepped inside.
"Oh my God" I shrieked.
"Is there a problem my lady?" Penelope's gently voice sounded from behind me.
"What? Of course there is a problem Penelope" her eyes widened at my words, I could already see slight fear in her eyes and I internally cringed. I shouldn't have worded it like that.
"Oh. I'm sorry my lady, is there anything you'd like me to do for you?" She asked, her voice shaky.
I sighed, complete shock and surprise still overwhelming me, I was surprised how I was still fuctioning.
I placed my palm on her shoulder, her body stiffening and her eyes widening slightly, her eyes shifted to where my hand was placed on her shoulders but she bowed her head down immediately.
"Please Penelope, call me Harriet. We are the same age anyways."
"I'm sorry my lady, I can't do that! We were instructed by the Lord that no one was to call you by your name" I narrowed my brows at that.
Why would he say that?
"He did?" I asked.
Penelope nodded, her eyes still facing downward.
"Oh well. What he doesn't know won't hurt him right?" I smiled.
Penelope stared at me incredulously, unbelievably but she didn't argue, her eyes simply shifted downward again.
I shook my head and turned away from her to the Grand view before me. It was a three story building. Everything was in black, grey and brown, beginning from the tiles that looked like glass, I could see myself through its reflection.
There was a few stair leading into the massive sitting room from the hallway, the three fleet of stairs was surrounding the whole sitting room. There was a lit fireplace in the centre of the sitting room with a heavy glass table above it, I wondered how possible that was.
Black leather cushions and sofa surrounding the lited fire place. There was a large gigantic chandelier handing in ceiling, directly above the glass tables.
I took steps into the room and my feet almost gave out from under me. I glanced up the railings of each staircase, it was brown in color and it looked really beautiful. The kitchen was another story. Everything looked squishy clean, brown wardrobes and cupboards. i couldn't see everyone clearly but the kitchen was very large, the counter wasn't white like the movies, this one was brown and could be taken as a large long table.
I wondered how one person could clean a house as gigantic as this one.
"Penelope?" I called.
Penelope scurried to my side immediately. "Yes my lady" I sighed, not even moving to correct her.
"Is this were your master lives?" I asked, not even bothering to divert my gaze from the beauty before me.
"Only sometimes my lady" that seemed to pull me out.
I glanced over at Penelope bowed beside me.
"Only sometimes?" I parroted. She nodded.
"He is hardly ever home, always working and traveling. But when he does come back, he only stays for a while before leaving again" my eyebrows knotted at that.
"I see" I hummed. "So you and the other workers are the only ones who live here?" I asked, my eyes scanning the whole place now.
"Yes my lady"
The house could contain the whole of Sinda's city and beyond, I wondered how it was just five people that lived here. The house looked as though it could contain a total of hundred rooms causing me to ask how one person thought he could live here alone.
Penelope's voice soon dragged me from my thoughts.
"My lady. You have to start getting ready now, the Lordship would be back soon"
"What? Today? I thought you said he doesn't stay home?" I asked, already feeling nervous at seeing him again. The little bubble of excitement I was feeling dissipating at the mention of his presence.
I wasn't even going to get one night in this luxurious place before I saw my worst nightmare? That's highly unfair.
"He desires to see you before embarking on his journey my lady" I gave an aggravated sigh, my heart already thumping in my chest.
"Can you at least stop calling me that already?" I said, my whole mood already shifting just at the thought of seeing him.
"I'm sorry my---"
"You know what? Just forget it. C'mon, let's go" I sighed already walking away. I didn't even know where I was going but I didn't need to complain too much before Penelope was taking the lead.
Now all I had to worry about was seeing the mysterious man again.
