~LEYLANI~
“Hey goatee, you called for me.” I stepped into Jaylen’s room, closing the door behind me before walking further into his bedroom.
“What did we say about knocking?” His voice echoed from somewhere in the room, but he was nowhere in sight.
“I will start knocking when you learn how to keep your door locked, goatee.” I take my seat on the bed, grabbing the daily newspaper placed on the bedside cabinet.
“You know Lola would throw a fit if she hear you calling me goatee.” The door to his walk-in closet opened and Jaylen stepped out with a bunch of clothes in his hand.
“And all she can do is throw a fit, then get over it. If you want me to stop calling you goatee, get rid of that monstrosity you call a beard.” It became a constant habit to have this back and forth over his beard.
I made it a mission to tease him ever since he started growing beards after high school, because at first the way he reacted was always hilarious to me. I’d usually tell him he’d look like an infant without his beards, tease him about growing out his beards because that’s the only way anyone would ever take him serious. His reactions were always funny, but he knows there’s never been any malice behind whatever I say, since he’s no different from me. He takes quite the delight in teasing me about my physique and muscles, the fact that I’m obsessed with training and getting stronger. It’s always been friendly banter between us.
“As if I would, we both know you’re jealous about my beard because it makes me look better than your mate.” Jaylen muttered, dumping the clothes in his hand on the bed.
“Is this you finally admitting that you look like a child without those beards? I can assure you, with or without your beard, you have nothing on my mate. So don’t flatter yourself.” Jaylen scoffed as I placed the newspaper back on the counter, slumping on the other side of the bed, staring at the heap of clothes he dumped in the middle of the bed.
“Is this why you called me?”
“I need help, help me pick something to wear.” Jaylen muttered with a stressed out sigh. Another thing about him is his horrible fashion sense, and Lola, his mate, isn't actually the best person to go when it comes to picking out a dress. She’s fairly better than him, but still as horrible, they do make the perfect pair though.
“What’s the occasion?” I skipped through the clothes on the bed, shaking my head at his choices, “Also, when did I become your stylist, and what’s this nonsense you have out here?” I raised one of the fabrics up, dangling the almost faded green shirt with a horrible floral design before his face.
“I’m taking Lola out tonight, I need something to wear.” He snatched the horrendous green shirt from my hand, throwing it somewhere in the corner of the room. “That was meant to go in the trash, I keep forgetting to throw it out.” Jaylen grumbled.
“I don’t get paid enough to pick outfits for you to go on a date with your mate,” I hissed, standing up from the bed, “and all the clothes you have out here are horrible. Did someone raid your closet and get rid of all the good clothes?” I dangled another ugly looking shirt before him, and he rolled his eyes as he snatched it.
“Some of these are house wear, not for an outing.” Jaylen mutters, standing up after me as I walked over to his closet.
“Then why the hell did you heap them on the bed, asking me to pick you something to wear from a pile of trash? One would think you wanted to dress up for a circus.”
“I just grabbed anything I could from the closet, can you stop nagging me and make yourself useful?” Jaylen whined, and I turned to him with a glare.
“How about I make my hand useful and beat you to death.” I replied, smacking his shoulder, and he let out a wince, “Anyway, what’s the theme for your date? Casual, chic, romantic, honeymoon or just two hungry fools going to a fancy restaurant to eat?” I asked, skimming my hands through the clothes in his closet as I walked in.
“Will you ever stop?” Jaylen asked, shaking his head.
“Stop what?” I turned to him with a frown.
“This foul mouth of yours, will it ever stop? You always have something foul spilling out of your mouth.” He murmured, rolling his eyes as I scoffed.
“That’s my charm, it’s why you all like me, because I don’t go about telling anyone they’re the wisest when they’re in fact stupid.” I replied with a shrug, “will you tell me the theme or should I just pick whatever I want?” I turned to him, crossing my arms while he gave me a blank look over before shaking his head.
“I booked a reservation at a five-star restaurant in the heart of the capital, so it’s somewhat important for both of us. So something regal, royalty, but it shouldn’t be too much.” Jay responds, flopping his ass on the sofa in his closet.
“So classic regal wear, not too flamboyant but good enough to make heads turn.” Jaylen nodded at my words, “Okay; noted, mind telling me why y’all are going on a royal date out of the blue?” I asked, as I searched through the many clothes in his closet for something befitting of his date tonight.
“The coronation ceremony starts tomorrow.”
“I thought tomorrow was for cleansing and some rituals?” I quipped, casting a glance at him.
“Yeah well it’s the same thing, as from tomorrow you know we’ll barely have time for ourselves. There’s no time in between the rituals, ceremony, coronation for us to go out or spend time together.” I turned to him, the left side of my face scrunched in confusion.
“No time? Once the coronation is over, there’s enough time for you to take her out and do whatever you like.”
“I wish, but father told me this morning, that as soon as I am crowned king, I need to prove my worth to the kingdom. Once the ceremony and coronation ends this week, we’ll be leaving for Rosov Province the next day, and we have to stay until we find answers.” Jaylen shared.
“When you said we, you meant you and uncle, right?” I asked, with a narrowed gaze.
“Me and Father? You’re my second-in-command. When I said we, I meant US, you and I. We’re going to Rosov the day after my coronation, that’s our first mission.” He replied, and I clenched my jaw because why the hell am I just hearing this now?
“Seriously, and you didn’t think I needed to know about this before now?” I asked, crossing my arms.
“I just found out this morning,”
“So? You could’ve informed me this morning. What if I had other plans ahead for that day?”
“Then you cancel it. The moment I become King, and you are my second-in-command, you already know most of your time belongs to the kingdom. It’s the same for both of us.”
He said, trying to talk his way out of his little mishap of not informing me, but the look I had on my face was enough to tell him I was taking his crap right now. “Come on Ni, don’t look at me like that, I was preoccupied with other things this morning.” I shrugged, turning my back to him as I continued with picking out clothes for him, without saying a word.
“Alright, I’m sorry for not informing you as soon as I learnt about it.”
I gave no reaction to his apology. I understand that I owe a duty to the kingdom and the pack once he becomes Alpha King, and I take my place as his Beta and second-in-command. He is aware we won't have time after the coronation, and he had already made plans with his mate. Meanwhile, he didn’t think it was okay to tell me, because, Alas, I wouldn’t want to spend as much time as I could with my mate, before taking this mantle.
“Leyla, I’m sorry. I had other things to do and it escaped my mind this morning. Besides, that’s the reason I also called you here. Come on cousin, don't give me the cold shoulder. I said, I am sorry.” Jaylen tried again and I just shrugged.
“It is whatever. You get to utilize the little time you have with your mate, without informing me on things I should know. Why? Because you think I wouldn’t want to spend more time with my mate?Or because you know I’m not romantic and that means I wouldn’t want to go on sweet dates with my mate?”
I shoved the black pants I picked onto his chest, walking away from him to the other side of the closet to look for a few suitable caftans that he could pair with the pants.
“Come on now, Cousin, you know that is not my intention and you know I forget things easily. I swear I called you here so I could also inform you about it.”
“Sure, I’ll get my lick back at you. Why are we going to Rosov Province anyway?”
I took three different styles of Caftan off the hangers, one with black beadwork embroidery, another deep brown button-less Caftan with black and black stone embroidery, and a black Caftan with gold floral designs.
“Didn’t you hear about the attacks?” Jaylen asked, as I handed him the Caftans.
“The one about the rumored warlock who goes around wreaking havoc on different werewolf packs?” I asked, and Jaylen nodded.
“Yeah, father got a report that he attacked a pack settlement on the border of Rosov, fortunately there were no deaths this time, but some of the pack warriors got pretty messed up.” Jaylen shared, and I frowned.
“What exactly does he want? He doesn’t take hostages, doesn’t rob the packs of anything, does he just derive joy from wreaking havoc? Besides, do you actually believe it’s a warlock? There’s never been one in ages.” I asked, and Jaylen sighed.
“Information reaching us is that he’s looking for someone. We don’t know who, but he has a vendetta towards that person. Anyway, I think we’ll get more information about him in Rosov, hopefully something that can give us a lead on how to track him down. Also, believing if the attacker is truly a warlock, I guess we have to see with our own eyes.”
“I wonder what the person did to him. Rosov is a long way from home. Damn, that’s one hell of a journey for a first mission.” I let out a dissatisfied grumble and Jaylen nodded in agreement.
Rosov Province is a three-day journey away from here, and the second largest Province that makes up the sovereign Kingdom of YAXKIN. Rosov happens to be one of the few provinces without problems. Literally one of the safest, so it makes no sense that anyone would attack any of the pack settlements in the Province.
“Anyway, try those on. When you do, step out, let me see what it looks like, so I can know if I have to look for something else or just find the perfect accessories to fit.” I said, patting his shoulder before walking out his closet, giving him privacy to try on the clothes I chose and I slumped on the bed.
That warlock, whoever he is. He is becoming a major problem for the kingdom. I’ve only heard a few stories in the past months, but I thought they were just rumors because lots of rumors fly around the capital, which later spread into the palace. The majority of the time, they’re just nonsense made up by traders to scare travelers. But this one about this warlock who seems to have an issue with my kind seems to be more than just rumors,
“Hey, what do you think?” My eyes snapped open at the sound of Jaylen’s voice and I propped my elbow on the bed, leaning up to see him walk out of the closet while wearing the Black Caftan with the gold floral embroidery.
“Hmmm, I think you should try on the brown one, check the rack on the left and you should find matching pants for the brown one. Try it on, let’s see how it’ll look.” I told him, and he nodded, walking back to the closet.
While waiting for Jaylen to step out, my thoughts wandered to my mate. I know he’s going to throw a little tantrum once I tell him about the trip. Perhaps I could get him to follow us, but I don’t if Uncle would agree. Amir is the Alpha Commander of the kingdom’s Army, the King probably won’t let him come with us.
But once Jaylen becomes King, Amir should be assigned to him officially instead of the current King. That means he would be the one leading Jaylen’s security team; perhaps he can come with us after all. The sound of the closet door pulling open caught my attention, pulling me out of my thoughts.
“So let’s see how it l— Goatee?” I called, as Jaylen, instead of walking towards the bed, turned with his singlet and began walking towards the door half naked.
“Goatee, where are you going? Aren’t you trying on the clothes again?” I asked, rising from the bed, because I got no response from him.
“Jaylen, where the f*ck are you going?” I growled, and Jaylen stopped abruptly. It took a few seconds before he turned to face me, and a gasp escaped me.
His fangs and claws were out, and his eyes were as black as the devil’s heart. If the devil’s heart actually has a color, I am certain it is the color of Jaylen’s eyes right now.
“Jay, what the hell is up with you? Why are your eyes black?” My words seemed to have no effect on him, because neither did he respond, or react.
I pushed away from the bed just as he got closer, and I grabbed his shoulder to shake him in hopes to get his attention or snap him out of whatever this was.
“What the f—” The rest of my words came out as a choked up sound as Jaylen’s finger gripped my throat.
‘What is wrong with you, Jaylen, snap out of it.’ I screamed through the mind link as I struggled against his hold, but his grip on my neck didn’t loosen, neither did it look like he heard me.
His extended claws dug into the side of my neck, causing me to wince in pain, but that only came out as another harsh choking sound as my body instinctively struggled for air, and my breathing faltered.
I gripped his wrist, trying to pry his hand from my neck, but hell he is an Alpha, and his grip just seemed to tighten with each passing second. ‘Eileen f*cking help me,’ I yelled frantically for my wolf, as my vision soon became blurry and it felt like my brain would explode any minute.
My wolf pushed forward, taking over, growling Jaylen’s wolf name loudly through the mind-link, which almost seemed to have had an impact on him. For a moment, Jaylen’s eyes changed from pitch black to blazing red, indicating the presence of his wolf. His wolf snarled loudly, and his grip around my throat briefly slackened.
Twisting his wrist, I pried Jaylen’s hand off my neck while Maleki’s snarls turned into low growls. “What is wrong with you? Maleki.” I let out, wheezing as I tried to walk out of being trapped between him and the bed, only for Jaylen’s hand to dig into my shoulder.
“What the hell man, snap out of it.” I yelled in pain, looking up to see Maleki was gone, and Jaylen’s eyes had snapped back to the horrifying black pit it once was.
“This has to be some sick joke.” I hissed, prying his hands from my shoulder, and I stumbled backwards, pulling Jaylen with me as I tried dodging a sudden punch from him.
A groan slipped past my lips as Jaylen toppled over on me, his weight pressing me into the bed. “F*ck you’re heavy.” I cursed, in an attempt to push Jaylen off my body, only for me to wheeze out in pain as he pushed his elbow against my throat, pinning me to the bed.
‘Stop trying to kill me, motherf*cker.’ I yelled at him through the mindlink, trying my best to dodge the punch from his left hand, while struggling against his elbow which pinned me to the mattress.
“What the hell are you doing? Jaylen stop__ Snap out of it.” I yelled frantically as he gripped my blouse all of a sudden, ripping it in half and his claws scratched my chest.
I managed to land a few blows to his ribs, while trying to get him off me. Another cry tore out of me, as his claws painfully dug into my left ribs.
“F*cking bastard Alpha.” I snarled, punching him hard in the chest, using that split moment of him losing balance to push him off me, and I scrambled to get out of bed, almost falling on my face.
“I swear to goddess, I am going to f*cking kill you, Jaylen, you f*cking bastard.” I cried out, pain and fear coursing through my entire body as I felt the sting of his claws tearing through the flesh of my ankle.
“F*cking bastard.” I screamed, kicking frantically against his grip on my leg as he tried pulling me back onto the mattress, while half of my body dangled off the edge of the bed.
“Jaylen, snap out of whatever is wrong with you, dude you’re hurting me.” His claws dug painfully into my thighs, successfully pulling me back into bed, and I kicked at him, yet none of it seemed to derail him from whatever has him acting like this.
He pressed into my back, claws digging painfully into my flesh, while I struggled to break free from his hold. ‘You have to knock him out, I can’t reach his wolf. I can’t reach our mate either. Something is obstructing the link. Knock him out.’ Eileen muttered through the mindlink.
I struggled to push close to the edge of the bed, despite Jaylen’s knee pressing into my spine, giving up my fight to kick him as I reached for the golden candle stand on the nightstand. I grabbed the gold candle stand, turned slightly to swing my hand, knocking the candle stand against the side of his head and Jaylen’s body slumped.
Tremor and shock coursed as my arm fell to the side, my breathing came out in heavy pants and my left hand trembled as Jaylen rolled off my body. I turned to take a look at him, and my eyes widened in disbelief at the sight of the blood streaming down the side of his head, his ears and bleeding nose.
"Jaylen?" I called through labored breath, forcing my body up to inspect his face. "F*ck... F*cking hell. Why are you bleeding from your nose and ears? I only hit your head. Jaylen."
The candle stand fell from my hand as I gripped his shoulder, attempting to shake him awake, and the door to his room slammed open.
