Ruby’s P.O.V
I was walking along the school halls, arms linked with my two best friends. We were heading towards the football field for lunch, our usual spot. I rolled my eyes as all the guys watched after us, wolf-whistling like a bunch of animals.
“God I am so over these guys at this place.” I groaned annoyed, “I need something new. I need a new challenge, one that will make me work because these guys are far too easy.” I added.
“You mean you need someone that doesn’t get a hard-on as soon as you walk by?” One of my best friends, Macy giggled.
She was right, though. All I have to do is wink at a guy or lick my lips, and they do whatever I want. It was fun at first; now, it is annoying. I don’t understand their obsessions with me, especially when they are surrounded by slutty, desperate cheerleaders throwing themselves at them. I was not one of them, a cheerleader, I mean. I was more on the wild, naughty side, a bad girl if you like, one that got what she wanted, when she wanted. All the cheerleaders hated me because they know their boyfriends would rather have me than them. I don’t mean to be this way; it just sort of happens. The guys can do what they want and get high fived for it. Why can’t us girls do the same?
“Yes, exactly. I need some excitement, someone that won’t give in to me as easily.” I said shrugging.
“Good luck with that. Every guy in this school wants you. You got that crazy, wild, sexy thing going on that they seem to love.” My other best friend Rose added, giggling.
“Not quite. Maybe I need to start looking for guys outside of school, college guys or something.” I smirked.
“Oh, yes, please.” Macy winked at me.
The three of us giggled, ignoring the eyes that were boring into our asses as we passed by. I was glad when we reached the football field. It was empty at this time of day; that is why we always came here. We dumped our stuff on the ground before plonking our backsides down, grabbing our lunch.
“How big of a challenge do you want?” Rose said, a devilish look on her face.
“What did you have in mind? It is written all over your face. You have a plan.” I smirked excited.
She smirked, nodding in the direction of the bleachers. I raised a brow, turning to where she was talking about.
“Cole?” I asked.
“Yup! He is the only guy in this place that doesn’t fall at your feet.” She giggled.
Cole was one of the biggest geeks in the school. The poor boy got a lot of hassle because he was different from everyone else. Cole kept his head down, ignoring most of it, but it could not be easy for him. He was kind of cute though with his messy hair and glasses. Every time you see him, he has his face in a book or something.
“I will be right back.” I winked, jumping to my feet.
I made my way over to the bleachers to where he was. He never even noticed me coming towards him; he was that preoccupied with the book in his hands.
“Hi,” I said sweetly, making him jump.
He looked up at me, looking very confused when he saw me standing in front of him. He started looking around, checking if maybe there was someone behind him. I giggled, shaking my head.
“I am talking to you, Cole.” I smiled.
“You are? Why?” He stuttered out.
“Why not?” I asked.
He wriggled his nose, rubbing the back of his neck, finding it hard to keep eye contact with me.
“Cause we have been in the same classes for about four years and you have never said hello to me,” He said chewing on the side of his mouth.
His clueless was kind of cute.
“You never said hello to me either,” I said smirking at him.
“I…I, I am not exactly good with other people.” He said in barely a whisper.
“Why?” I asked, sitting down next to him.
He awkwardly shifted as I sat close to him and his leg started bouncing up and down.
“I think you know the answer to that question, Ruby.” He said sadly.
I did know the answer to it. He is that way because no one bothers with him; he might as well be invisible. I don’t think he even has one friend, it kind of heart-breaking.
“What you doing anyway?” I asked.
“Studying for our test this afternoon.” He said shyly.
Test? s**t! I forgot about that. I have not even studied for it.
“s**t! I completely forgot about that. Mr Munro is going to kill me when I fail it.” I said a little panicked.
No matter what trouble I like to get into one thing I always try to do is keep on top of my school work because if I do well at school, then I can get into a decent college and get away from this damn place but math is something I struggle with sometimes. This town is too small; everyone knows your business, full of judgemental idiots.
“Here you can have a look at these, it’s only some notes, but they may help.” He said, giving me a small smile, handing me a few pages of paper.
“Don’t be silly; they are yours,” I said, looking at him.
“It is OK. I have been over them a hundred times. I don’t need them anymore.” He whispered gently.
“Thank You. That is very sweet of you.” I said.
I see his cheeks turn bright red when I said that, making me giggle. I forgot for a moment why I came over here, and then I remembered the plan. I was feeling a little bad about it, but I need something different…a challenge.
“You want to come and sit with my friends and me?” I asked.
“I don’t think that would do your reputations much good sitting with me, thank you though.” He said politely.
“I could not give a damn about my reputation, Cole. I don’t give a damn about what other people think.” I said shrugging.
It was the truth. I really could not care less about what anyone thinks of me. I stood up, standing in front of him, reaching my hand out for him to take. He looked at me like I was offering him poison or something.
“Come on? We don’t bite.” I said, giving him my best smile.
A smile that’s got me anything that I want. I see his chest move in and out, taking a deep breath…one… Two…three more times before he reached in, taking my hand that I offered. I pulled him to his feet, making him stumble a little. He managed to stop himself before he fell between the bleachers. I could tell he was embarrassed about, and I held my laugh in. As soon as he was steady, he was quick to pull his hand from mine.
I headed back over to my friends, Cole awkwardly following behind me. Once we arrived I took my seat back on the grass, Cole stood there, rocking on his heels, looking everywhere except at us.
“Cole, you can sit,” I said, patting the spot next to me.
He hesitated for a moment before coming over and sitting down next to me.
“This is Macy and Rose. Macy and Rose, this is Cole.” I said, introducing them.
“I know. Everyone knows who you three are.” He said shyly, “It’s nice to meet you, though.” He added.
“You too.” Macy and Rose said at the same time.
Cole gave them a small smile before turning away again, looking at nothing. The three us looked at each other, shrugging. I could tell he did not want to be here.
“Cole?” I said.
“Hmm.” He mumbled, looking at me.
“Are you OK?” I asked.
He nodded, his hands seem to be shaking a little. He seemed very anxious, but I guess it isn’t every day he gets invited to sit with a bunch of girls.
“You sure?” Rose asked.
“I gotta go. Bye.” He said quickly before taking to his feet, rushing off.
The three of us looked at each other, confused. Well, that is a first, a guy running away from us.
“You have your work cut out for you with this one,” Macy said to me.
“Yes, for sure. I will get there in the end, though.” I said winking at them.
I had a look over the notes before heading to class. At least if I have his notes which means he will need to talk to me again when I give him them back. Macy was right I have my work cut out with Cole. At least I will not get bored too quickly.
